Bengaluru: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will address a party rally on Sunday in Kolar, the same place where he made a remark on the Modi surname for which he was convicted of criminal defamation and also stripped of his Parliament membership.

According to state Congress sources, the former AICC president will arrive in Bengaluru on Sunday morning, and travel to Kolar where he will address the ‘Jai Bharat’ rally organised by the party.

In the evening, Gandhi will inaugurate the newly constructed ‘Indira Gandhi Bhavan’ – office and auditorium with a seating capacity of 750 people – near Karnataka PCC office in Bengaluru.

Several senior Congress leaders including AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, General Secretary in-charge of Karnataka Randeep Singh Surjewala, KPCC chief D K Shivakumar, legislature party leader and former chief minister Siddaramaiah are expected to participate in the events.

The rally was first scheduled on April 5, which was then postponed to April 9, and finally to April 16, due to poll preparation and candidate selection process, among other reasons, Congress sources said.

Gandhi was on March 23 sentenced to two years in jail by a court in Gujarat’s Surat in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his “why all thieves have the Modi surname” remark. A day later, he was disqualified from the Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction in the case. The Gandhi scion had made those remarks at Kolar in April, 2019 during the Lok Sabha poll campaign.
His visit on Sunday is important for the party ahead of the May 10 Assembly elections in Karnataka.

Kolar is significant as Siddaramaiah has expressed his wish to contest from there, as his second seat. He has already been fielded from Varuna in Mysuru district.

Congress has not yet named its candidate for the Kolar seat.

New Delhi: A public rally of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Kolar has now been postponed and is scheduled to be held on April 9.

Congress General Secretary (Organisation), K.C. Venugopal said, “@RahulGandhi will be in Kolar on April 9 and address the ‘Jai Bharat’ mega rally there. On April 11, he will visit Wayanad. He is the voice of the people, you can never silence him. This voice will only get louder and stronger.”

Gandhi, a former MP, was earlier scheduled to begin his campaign from Kolar for the Karnataka Assembly polls from April 5.

In 2019, Rahul during his Lok Sabha campaign had made a speech for which he was convicted in the Surat court in 2023.

Congress leaders say that beginning from Kolar is itself a manifestation that the party is ready to fight out the 2019 ‘Modi surname’ case politically and legally.

In Kolar, the Congress will attack the Karnataka government on the issue of corruption.

Randeep Singh Surjewala, Karnataka General Secretary In-charge, said the Congress will form the government in the state with the blessings of the people.

“As Karnataka goes to polls on May 10, Congress resolves to usher in a
new era of Peace-Progress-Prosperity and rebuild Brand Karnataka, restore Kannadiga pride, Congress guarantees to run a welfare-driven government at the Centre,” he added

The Election Commission on Wednesday announced the schedule for the Karnataka Assembly elections. The polling will be held on May 10 and the results will be declared on May 13.

The term of the 224-member Assembly ends on May 24.

Karnataka: Contest from Badami, not Kolar, people appeal Siddaramaiah

    [ad_1]

People of the Badami constituency are not happy with senior Karnataka Congress leader Siddaramaiah’s decision to contest from the Kolar district in the upcoming Assembly election scheduled to take place in May.

According to news reports, the people of Badami have decided to convince the former chief minister. Videos surfaced on Twitter where many were seen leaving for Bengaluru to appeal to the senior Congress leader to change his mind.

“We request Siddaramaiah to contest from Badami and not Kolar. We are planning to go to Bengaluru to convince him,” said one person holding a placard of the Congress leader and raising slogans.

Members of the Lingayat community said that they will go on a dharna if their plea is not considered.

Siddaramaiah, who currently represents the Badami segment had indicated that he may not contest from there, citing his inability to give more time to the people and party workers of the constituency.

“I have decided to be a candidate for the next election from Kolar,” Siddaramaiah said at the party workers meeting here, amid loud cheers from the crowd.

Badami is considered to be an important seat in the Bagalkot district, which falls under the “Mumbai-Karnataka region” of the state. Its major population consists of the Kuruba community, which Siddaramaiah hails from; followed by Lingayats and Veerashaivas.
