Sgr among 6 districts record deficient rainfall since Jan 01-Feb 08

Srinagar, Feb 08: At least six districts of Jammu and Kashmir including the summer capital of the Union Territory, Srinagar have recorded deficient rainfall since January 01-February 08, 2023, a data compiled by Meteorological department reveals on Wednesday.
The data, a copy of which lies with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), reveals that J&K in general has recorded normal rainfall as against the normal rainfall of 125.5 mm, it recorded 143.5 mm, which is 14 per cent above normal.
However, six of the districts including Srinagar, Budgam, Bandipora, Kathua, Jammu and Shopian have recorded deficient rainfall with official data stating that Srinagar has recorded 91.3 mm rainfall against 113.5 mm normal rainfall, indicating 20 per cent deficient rainfall since January 01 this year to February 08.
Against 88.6 mm normal rainfall, Budgam in central Kashmir has recorded 53.7 mm rainfall during the same period and also against 95.3 mm, Bandipora has recorded only 54.8mm rainfall, which is 39 and 43 per cent deficient rainfall respectively in the two districts.
The data further reads that Shopian has recorded 38 per cent deficient rainfall till today, adding that against normal rainfall of 60.9 mm, the district has recorded only 37.8 mm rainfall till today.
Jammu and Kathua districts have also recorded 41 and 38 per cent deficient rainfall respectively, the data added.
Moreover, the data reads that seven J&K districts including Anantnag, Doda, Kulgam, Poonch, Pulwama, Rajouri and Ramban have recorded excess rainfall since January 01 till today.
It added that six J&K districts including Ganderbal, Kishtwar, Samba, Kupwara, Reasi and Udhampur have recorded normal rainfall during the same period.

Meanwhile, the weatherman here has predicted light snowfall in J&K.
Director Meteorological department, Sonum Lotus said that there is a possibility of widespread light to moderate snowfall and rain in J&K with chances of heavy snowfall over higher reaches from tomorrow afternoon till 10th February.
The night temperature plummeted once again at a few places while Pahalgam, a famous tourist destination, recorded a low of minus 7.6 degree Celsius.
Srinagar also recorded minus 0.1 degree Celsius while Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 6.5 degree Celsius—(KNO)

Close to 1 lakh tech employees lost jobs in Jan alone globally

New Delhi: In what could be touted as the worst month ever for tech workers, close to 1 lakh of them lost jobs in the month of January globally, dominated by companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Salesforce and others.
It means that more than 3,300 tech employees lost jobs daily on an average by more than 288 companies worldwide.
Barring Apple, every other Big Tech firm has slashed jobs, led by Amazon with 18,000 job cuts, followed by Google with 12,000 and Microsoft 10,000 job cuts in January.
Salesforce (7,000), IBM (3,900) and SAP (3,000) were other tech companies that announced layoffs last month.
In 2022, over 1,000 companies laid off 154,336 workers, as per the data by layoffs tracking site Layoffs.fyi.
So in total, more than 2.5 lakh tech employees have lost jobs in 2022 and now.
As more and more Big Tech companies continue to sack employees, they listed various reasons behind the move — over-hiring, uncertain global macroeconomic conditions, strong tailwinds from the Covid-19 pandemic and more.
After laying off 11,000 employees, Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg now wants 2023 to be the “year of efficiency”.

Joining the mass layoff season, online marketplace OLX Group slashed 15 per cent of its workforce, or more than 1,500 employees, globally including in India as part of restructuring amid the global meltdown and recession fears.
Edtech major BYJU’s has laid off further 15 per cent of its employees from its engineering teams.
According to sources, the company in a fresh round of layoffs asked more than 1,000 workers (or 15 per cent) to go, mostly from its engineering teams.

Judge demands answers after Jan. 6 defendant recants guilt

In a brief order Friday morning, Mehta gave both sides one week to explain “why the court should not vacate Defendant’s convictions of guilt in light of his post-stipulated trial statements” included in the article. The judge also attached a copy of the news report.
It is unclear how the article in the Illinois newspaper came to the attention of Mehta, who sits at the federal courthouse near the Capitol.
Judges handling Jan. 6 cases have been repeatedly and increasingly irked by defendants appearing to be apologetic and contrite in court, only to make public statements days later minimizing their guilt and sounding cavalier about their actions. And judges are loath to accept what effectively amounts to a guilty plea from any defendant who doesn’t sincerely believe in their own guilt.
Adams, who told the Illinois newspaper he was recently fired from his job as a lawn care worker, acknowledged under oath Tuesday that he had committed the conduct Mehta ultimately found him guilty of. He acknowledged walking over broken glass as he went inside the Capitol and that he told the FBI his intent was to “occupy” the building for days, if necessary. Adams also acknowledged that he “knew that he did not have authorization” when he went into the Senate chamber and walked among the senators’ historic desks.
Entering the Senate chamber has been a sort of red line for prosecutors, with them insisting on felony guilty pleas or convictions to resolve cases against those who went inside, even briefly.
And so far they’ve been nearly unblemished in their prosecutions, though a judge recently acquitted a defendant of an obstruction charge despite his presence in the chamber.
Adams was on the Senate floor for about seven minutes before he was kicked out of the building, according to the statement of facts prosecutors and the defense agreed to in his case.
Stipulated trials have been used in recent months to seek to resolve about a dozen Jan. 6-related criminal cases where the defendant faced a felony charge of obstruction of a congressional proceeding. Almost 1,000 people have been charged criminally in connection with the unrest at the Capitol, which prompted a delay in the congressional session to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election.

One of Mehta’s colleagues, U.S. District Court Judge Carl Nichols, ruled that the obstruction charge did not apply unless prosecutors could prove that a defendant intended to tamper with or damage the actual electoral vote documents being tallied that day.
No other judge to consider the issue has agreed with Nichols. Meanwhile, prosecutors are appealing his decision to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.
Unlike the guilty pleas typically offered in deals with prosecutors, stipulated trials allow defendants in other cases to preserve their ability to wipe out their obstruction convictions if the D.C. Circuit sides with Nichols. The obstruction charge carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence, although no Jan. 6 defendant has received a sentence close to that in a case not involving violence.
The harshest sentence to date — 10 years — was delivered by Mehta to retired New York City cop Thomas Webster, who took his case to trial. Webster was convicted of a brutal assault of a Washington Metropolitan Police officer outside the Capitol, and Mehta found that Webster lied on the stand about his actions.
Adams also admitted Tuesday to the facts needed to convict him on a misdemeanor charge of entering and remaining in the Capitol without permission. That carries a one-year maximum sentence. Mehta has set sentencing in the case for June 16.
The FBI appears to have zeroed in on Adams after he said on the day after the Capitol riot that he enjoyed the experience. “It was a really fun time,” Adams told Insider. He has since said he did not know of the violence taking place elsewhere in the building and on the Capitol grounds.

In a statement Kashmir Traders Alliance has condoled the demise of prominent businessman and trader of Kashmir, Jan Muhammad Koul.
Expressing sympathy with bereaved family, President KTA, Ajaz Shahdhar expressed shock over the demise of Koul.J
“Jan Sahab was our mentor who was respected by all in the business fraternity for his behavior and conduct. He was Kashmir’s veteran trader who had served and led prominent trader bodies in the Valley,” reads the statement.
KTA prayed for the departed soul and expressed sympathies with the bereaved family.
His death has left has a big void in business fraternity of Kashmir.

Jan 21 Narwal blasts: Govt employee from Reasi arrested, drone-dropped Perfume IED recovered, says DGP Dilbagh Singh

Srinagar, Feb 02: Jammu and Kashmir police Thursday claimed to have achieved a major breakthrough in January 21 Narwal, Jammu blast by arrested a Lashkar-e-Toiba militant, who is also a government employee, from whose possession a “perfume IED”, first of its kind, was recovered.
Addressing a press conference in Jammu, Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbagh Singh, as per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said that after 11 days of hardwork of the Jammu police, a major success was achieved in the form of arrest of one Arif Ahmed, a resident of Reasi district of Jammu.
“Arif is a government employee and is an active militant of Lashkar-e-Toiba outfit. He was working at the behest of Qasim, a Reasi resident and his uncle Qamardin, also a Reasi resident, presently in Pakistan, who are part of LeT,” the DGP said. He said Arif was involved in three IED blast incidents—Shahstri Nagar, Katra and January 21 incident of Narwal, Jammu.
“So far we had seen IED with explosive materials, sticky bombs and timer fitted IEDs but a new type of IED was recovered from Arif which is Perfume IED. This IED is in a bottle form and seems like a perfume bottle but contains explosive material,” the DGP said, adding that “since the IED is new to us, experts will see how harmful and how powerful it can be. We have not touched it so far.”
He said that the main aim of these IEDs is to target innocent people and to trigger communal hatred in the Jammu region. “Arif will not only lose his job but a strong dossier will be prepared against him. He was a very clever operative. He had burnt all the evidence be that his clothes, shoes and that he even set ablaze his mobile phone as well. But police worked hard on even small inputs and leads that led to the arrest of Arif,” he said, as per KNO.
The DGP said that IED’s received by Arif were air-dropped through drones. “He has confessed to the crime,” he said. To a query about Danghri, Rajouri incident and the fate of probe, the DGP said that the investigations are in the advance stage and the output will be shared with the media men shortly.
Asked about further links of Arif and possible Kashmir connection, the DGP said that so far it has not been seen that Kashmiri youth are coming to Jammu for militancy or for that matter Jammu youth going to Kashmir. “Further investigations are on,” he said—(KNO)

Jan. 6 defendant who sprayed line of police sentenced after tearful apology

“You’re entitled to your political views but not to an insurrection,” the judge said. “You were an insurrectionist.”
Caldwell has remained in pretrial custody since Feb. 10, 2021 — 721 days, he noted — and was one of the earliest charged with a direct assault on police that day.
But Caldwell’s hearing was most notable for the extensive expression of remorse, delivered almost entirely through tears, to a nearly empty courtroom.
“I must face my actions head on,” he said, before delivering a voluminous apology to the officers he attacked. “I hope that you and our country never have to face another day like January 6th.”
Caldwell said he spent the days immediately after the attack rationalizing what he did and looking for validation from family, friends and his attorney. He said he now looks back at his actions and “it literally floors me.”
He described himself as “ashamed” and “embarrassed” about his conduct and described efforts to better himself while in custody, reading self-help books and reflecting on how he became a catalyst of violence that day.
“I clearly let my emotions take control,” he said. “Being a Marine, I should have known better. … I wish I could take it back, but I can’t.”
As his sister, one of his daughters and her husband looked on, Caldwell lamented that he’d likely miss the birth of his first grandchild while incarcerated and was unable to repair a “broken relationship” with his biological mother, who passed away while he was in pretrial incarceration. He expressed regret that he’d miss his middle child’s military deployment and would be unable to be there for his aging father, who is battling cancer. His youngest son told family members that he felt like his “dad died,” Caldwell recalled. Caldwell’s wife, now the sole provider for the household, was struggling to get by.

“Knowing their pain is crushing my heart,” Caldwell said. “I have paid a high price, and I accept that I still have to pay more.”
Kollar-Kotelly said she appreciated his statement of apology to the officers, but as a Marine, he should have directed his apology to the whole country.
She described in detail his attack on officers, noting that one officer who he sprayed began to “vomit uncontrollably.” The air was so thick with chemicals that it wasn’t clear whether the officers he hit were injured by him directly or by a combination of factors. No victims delivered statements to the court ahead of sentencing.
Kollar-Kotelly also put his involvement in the broader Jan. 6 attack in the context of previous challenges to the United States government. She said it was crucial for her sentence to “fortify against the revolutionary fervor that you and others felt on Jan. 6 and may still feel today.”
“Insurrection is not,” she said, “and cannot ever be warranted.”

Mercury Rises At Most Places As Chillai-Kalan Nears To End
Srinagar, Jan 28 (GNS): As the 40-day harsh winter period, Chilla-i-Kalan, nears to an end, the weather department on Saturday issued a yellow warning for heavy snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir on January 30.
A meteorological department official here told GNS widespread moderate snow and rain ( in Jammu) with “heavy” snowfall in Pirpanjal, South Kashmir, Doda-Kistawar etc.( more than 75% chances) was likely on Monday.
On January 31, the MeT official said, light to moderate snow and rain was expected at scattered places.
There are four types of colour codes signifying the level of caution: green which means no action, yellow—situation to be watched, orange–government agencies need to be prepared for severe weather and red –action needed by the agencies.
He said the weather system may cause snow avalanches in the areas prone to them. It may likely to affect surface and air transportation on Monday, he said. Power supply may also get affected.
“People are advised not to venture out in avalanche prone areas, unless emergency,” he said, adding, “Passengers are advised to travel after confirmation of road status from concerned traffic police”.
Regarding temperature, he said that Srinagar recorded a low of 1.7°C against 1.2°C on the previous night. Today’s minimum temperature, he said, was above normal by 2.7°C for the summer capital.

Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 0.2°C against minus 0.6°C on the previous night and it was 2.8°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.
Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of minus 6.9°C against minus 4.3°C on the previous night and it was 0.8°C below normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Kokernag recorded a low of minus 0.7°C against minus 0.9°C on the previous night and it was 1.9°C above normal for the place, the officials said.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 7.2°C against minus 8.6°C on the previous night and it was 0.3°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.
In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at minus 2.6°C against minus 3.7°C on the previous night and it was above 0.1°C below normal for the north Kashmir area.
Jammu recorded a low of 6.1°C against 5.5°C on the previous night. It was 2.6°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.
Banihal recorded a low of minus 0.4°C (below normal by 0.2°C), Batote 1.7°C (above normal by 0.8°C), Katra 6.6°C (0.3°C below normal) and Bhadarwah minus 1.4°C (0.6°C below normal).
Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 13.6°C and minus 14.8°C respectively, the official said.
Kashmir is under the grip of Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day long harsh winter period that started on December 21. It does not mean an end to the winter either. It is followed by a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ that occurs between January 30 and February 19 and a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 1. MeT Predicts Another Spell Of Snowfall, Wet Condition Till 31 Jan For J&K – Kashmir News

Srinagar, Jan 29 : The weatherman has predicted fresh snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, saying that a fresh Western Disturbance is affecting the Union Territory from today (29 Jan 2023).
Yesterday, on 28 jan, Deputy Director Meteorological department (MeT) said that there is a possibility of fresh snowfall in J&K, especially in the higher reaches of the Union Territory.
He said that the main activity would be from January 29 evening or night, adding that the wet weather conditions are expected in J&K parts from today, which would continue till January 31.

Hyderabad: Numaish records 11 lakh visitors since Jan 1

Hyderabad: The All India Industrial Exhibition (Numaish) witnessed a footfall of 11 lakh visitors since its inaugural on January 1.
Numaish has been the all-time favorite hanging spot of the city for decades despite recreational and amusement centers coming up Numaish finds a special place in the hearts of the people.
Ashwin Margam, vice president, the exhibition society said that so far 11 lakh people visited this year and the number will increase as the exhibition will be open to the public till February 15.
Traders from all over the country set up about 2300 stalls in the exhibition and sold their merchandise like clothes, crockery, bedding, artifacts, electronic items, and other items.
The highest crowds are witnessed on weekends and public holidays. The TSRTC and the Hyderabad Metro Rail are operating special services to cater to the transport need of the Numaish crowds.
Meanwhile, the Exhibition Society is permitting cars inside the ground to enable senior citizens and women to enjoy the oldest recreational place of the city and facilitate families in picking up and transporting the merchandise purchased at the stalls.
The Hyderabad SHE teams are maintaining a hawk eye and caught 41 persons who are found sexually harassing women. All of them are produced before the court and awarded jail terms between 3 and 10 days period.
