Junk Food And Sedentary Lifestyle Behind Increasing Childhood Obesity In Kashmir: DAK

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) has expressed concern over the increasing number of obesity cases among children in the Kashmir valley. On World Obesity Day, Dr Nisar ul Hassan highlighted that junk food and a sedentary lifestyle are the primary factors contributing to this issue. According to the latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), the percentage of obesity among children in Kashmir has increased from 2.1% in NFHS-4 (conducted in 2015-16) to 3.4% in NFHS-5 (conducted in 2019-20).

Dr Hassan emphasized that the shift towards junk food, which has replaced homemade meals, is a major contributing factor. Children are consuming fast food like burgers, pizzas, chips, sugary drinks, and frozen ready meals. He also highlighted that television advertisements targeting children and junk food sold in school cafeterias are promoting unhealthy dietary habits. Furthermore, high dependency on smartphones has led to children leading sedentary lifestyles, which is another contributing factor.

Childhood obesity has been linked to several health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, joint problems, and liver disease. Dr Nisar stressed the need for parents to encourage their children to adopt healthy eating habits and participate in sports during leisure time to prevent obesity. Preventing obesity helps protect children’s health in the present and future.

Dr Nisar called for increased awareness and action to eliminate obesity, which is becoming a major health crisis. He also emphasized the importance of educating parents to prevent their children from becoming obese.

  • Early Elections and Restoration Of Statehood Way Forward: AS Dulat

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Ex-RAW chief AS Dulat has suggested early elections and the restoration of statehood as the way forward for Jammu and Kashmir. In an interview with Hindustan Times at an event in Chandigarh, Dulat stated that empathy is required for the region, just like the border-sensitive state of Punjab.

Dulat further stated that Kashmiris have reconciled themselves to the abrogation of Article 370, and the issue is now alive only in political rhetoric and the case in the Supreme Court. Since the situation in the Valley is under control, it is time to move forward politically.

Dulat suggested that if Prime Minister Narendra Modi were to visit Srinagar and announce elections and restore statehood, he would win over Kashmiris. Kashmiris want peace with honor and dignity, and the biggest fear for the past 25 years has been what will happen if they are reduced to a minority in their own land.

Dulat also defined Kashmiriyat as togetherness and cited the crowds that joined Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra on its last leg in Anantnag. He reiterated the message for New Delhi that Kashmir needs a leader who can manage the Valley and Delhi and understand both. He placed his trust in traditional mainstream parties of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly NC leader and former chief minister Farooq Abdullah.

“Rahul promoted the idea of India in Kashmir,” he said, reiterating the message for New Delhi. “Kashmir needs a leader who can manage the Valley and Delhi. A leader who understands both. NC leader and former chief minister Farooq Abdullah can bridge dil ki doori and dilli ki doori,” he said, reposing faith in traditional mainstream parties of Jammu and Kashmir.

  • There Is Nothing Much To Boast About JK, Tarigami On HM Speech

    [ad_1]

Srinagar: Senior CPI (M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami on Friday criticized Home Minister’s remarks made during his virtual address to Kashmir Mahotsav organized by Indian Institute of Sustainability, Gujarat University.

Jammu and Kashmir’s claims of being a model of democracy have been refuted by Tarigami while criticizing the government’s assertions that Panchayat elections were held in the region, stating that similar elections are being conducted in the rest of the country without depriving people of the right to elect their assemblies.

Tarigami also pointed out that Panchayat Raj Institutions cannot be a substitute for the assemblies, which are the only representative bodies empowered to legislate on public issues. He went on to say that the government has virtually demolished the crucial pillar of democracy in Jammu and Kashmir by not holding assembly elections, even after completing the delimitation process and revising electorates.

“The legislature remains the crucial pillar of democracy in federal structure, but unfortunately the GOI has virtually demolished this pillar in Jammu and Kashmir. Even after completing the so called de-limitation process and revision of electorates, the government has no temerity to hold the assembly elections.” he added.

“It is very unfortunate that the Home Minister has ignored the ballooning youth unemployment while beating trumpets about the start-up ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir.  The growing unemployment has left thousands of educated youth distraught in this region.” Tarigami added.

“Additionally, if J&K’s  post abrogation situation is presented by the government as a model of democracy then who stops them to replicate it in ‘Gujarat’ or other BJP ruled states ? The unemployment rate in this region has touched a staggering 21.8 percent, which is the highest in the entire country. There is nothing for the Central dispensation or Home Minister that needs to be shouted from the rooftops.” he concluded.
