  • Indian ragas gave birth to the iconic theme tune of James Bond 007 films

Indian ragas gave birth to the iconic theme tune of James Bond 007 films

    [ad_1]

Most of us have watched James Bond films. And we have also heard the iconic theme tune that introduces Bond to the audience. The tune is full of suspense and foreboding. But not many people know that the memorable tune has its origins in a work of fiction connected with Indian culture. The man who first wrote the tune was a British composer, musician and singer named Monty Norman. He wrote the tune for the very first Bond film titled Dr. No and thereafter it was used, sometimes with slight variations, in every James Bond film.

As the Bond films grew in popularity throughout the world, the tune became one of the most recognised themes on the planet. What makes the James Bond theme so appealing is its ability to evoke a sense of excitement and danger. The pounding rhythm and gradually soaring melody create a sense of excitement and anticipation, hinting at the fast paced action sequences that are to follow on the screen.

Monty Norman has said that the James Bond tune was inspired by “Good Sign, Bad Sign”, a song that he himself composed for a musical stage adaptation of V.S. Naipaul’s novel A House For Mr. Biswas. The novel was set among the Indian community in Trinidad. In brief, the story was about a man named Mohun Biswas, an Indian living in Trinidad, who has married into a wealthy family but ends up being dominated by his in-laws.

When Monty Norman was approached to compose a song for the stage show of the novel, the composer decided to rely heavily on an Indian theme and ambience. Since the story was about the Indian community settled in Trinidad, he composed a tune with a very heavy Indian influence and sound complete with sitar and tabla. The song was titled Good Sign, Bad Sign.

Later, when Monty Norman was roped in to compose the theme for the first James Bond film, he suddenly had a bright idea of presenting the same tune with a few minor changes.

But even after the changes, Monty Norman’s tune sounded too Indian and the producers felt that it may not be appreciated by a worldwide audience. So they requested another composer named John Barry Prendergast to rearrange the tune. So John Barry made a few more changes and it clicked. It was then included as the theme in the first Bond film titled Dr.No starring Sean Connery and Ursula Andress. The film became a blockbuster and Connery shot to fame as the master spy James Bond, secret agent 007.

After the runaway success of Dr.No, Barry was hired to compose and perform eleven of the next fourteen James Bond films and he did so with great success. So that is how a tune which was originally based on Indian ragas became one of the most popular theme tunes in the Hollywood film industry and was also recognised and welcomed by millions of James Bond fans across the world.

  • Hackers exploiting SaaS platforms to target Indian BFSI sector

Hackers exploiting SaaS platforms to target Indian BFSI sector

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Cyber-security researchers on Monday said they have discovered several freemium software-as-a-service (SaaS) platforms that scammers abuse to conduct phishing campaigns against popular companies.

Most of these campaigns targeted Indian banking, financial services, and insurance (BFSI) customers.

Threat actors have resorted to using legitimate SaaS platforms to host phishing pages at a minimal/no cost. These short-lived and easy-to-host phishing pages are also difficult to trace back to the actors responsible, according to cyber-security firm CloudSEK.

SaaS products and services usually offer free or low-cost trials.

While this has allowed users across the world to try out services before subscribing or buying the products, it also provides an opportunity for threat actors to pose as legitimate users and misuse the products to defraud consumers.

The CloudSEK team identified several such incidents, especially targeting banking customers, and released advisories to inform the affected SaaS companies and the public.

Scammers were able to evade detection by cleverly exploiting the following user-friendly services provided by each of these platforms.

“Cybercriminals always try to use free services for phishing campaigns to maximize their profits. Developer-focused platforms like Cloudflare Pages and Firebase Hosting provide certain features such as GitHub integration, which are easily abused to create phishing domains,” the researchers noted.

  • Adani largest Indian investor in Australia, no impact on business: Envoy

Adani largest Indian investor in Australia, no impact on business: Envoy

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Australian High Commissioner Barry O’Farrell on Monday said the Adani Group has successful businesses and continues to be the largest investor from India in Australia.

Interacting with reporters here, O’Farrell said the impact of the Hindenburg report on the Adani Group is a matter for India’s regulators and that there have been no reports about the business group ceasing operations in Australia.

“Mr Adani’s investments in Australia are fully functioning and fully providing the resources, whether it is clean energy or coal. There have been no reports that I have seen in Australia that his operations have ceased. So, he is still a significant investor from India in Australia,” the envoy said in response to questions on the Adani Group.

Adani Group operates a port terminal, coal mines and solar energy projects in Australia.

The Australian envoy added that the Adani Group is probably the largest investor from India in Australia.

“He has successful businesses in Australia. In countries like Australia and India where you have a Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), free trade deal or a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement, people make decisions to invest or buy companies on the basis of what they feel is in their interest at that time. These matters are not for the government,” O’Farrell said.

The envoy refused to state if Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who is visiting India from Wednesday, will meet Adani.

  • More than 100 Indian healthcare professionals to be hired in UK: Report

More than 100 Indian healthcare professionals to be hired in UK: Report

    [ad_1]

London: In a bid to address shortage of healthcare workers, more than 100 professionals from India are set to be recruited by the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) Trust that runs the York and Scarborough Hospitals.

According to The Scarborough News, the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has made offers to 107 medical staff, including 97 registered nurses and 10 allied health professionals, following a recruitment trip to Kerala.

“The Trust has started the process to bid for NHS England funding to support international nursing recruitment between April – November 2023 and has indicated a target of 90 international nurses which could generate 450,000 pounds in funding,” members of the trust’s board of directors were told.

The Trust, which has been facing issues with the recruitment and retention of staff, stated that “work is underway to process applications and support candidates with their English to enable cohorts to be drafted so we can plan commencement dates across 2023/24”.

The trust, which runs York and Scarborough hospitals, had an 11.5 per cent vacancy rate for healthcare support workers in adult inpatient areas and a 14.5 per cent vacancy rate for registered nurses in adult inpatient areas in January this year, according to the news report.

The vacancy rate on adult inpatient wards dropped to 7.6 per cent after international nurses joined the trust, the board was told.

She said there was “immense work ongoing around retention” and added that the trust was struggling with staff who were leaving “very quickly”, chief nurse Heather McNair said at a previous board meeting.

McNair added that the vacancy levels for healthcare assistants remains high.

On December 15, 2022, nurses of the state-funded NHS carried out their first nationwide strike in the union’s 106-year history amid rising costs and demand for salary hikes.

An estimated 100,000 nurses went on strike at 76 hospitals and health centres, cancelling an estimated 70,000 appointments.

Last month, Britain’s largest nursing union warned of a workforce “exodus” with tens of thousands of young staff leaving the profession.

Nearly 43,000 nurses across the UK in the early stages of their careers have quit over the past five years, figures from the Royal College of Nursing showed — almost equal to the record 47,000 nursing posts now vacant in NHS England, The Guardian reported.

New Delhi: American Airlines has banned the Indian passenger, who had allegedly urinated on a fellow passenger while being drunk on a New York-New Delhi flight.

The accused, identified as 21-year-old Arya Vohra, a student at a US university, has been banned by the airline.

The airline said in a statement that it will not allow the passenger on board in the future.

The statement further said that the American Airlines flight AA292 from John F Kennedy International Airport to Indira Gandhi International Airport was met by local law enforcement upon arrival due to a disruptive customer. The flight landed safely at 9.50 p.m. on Saturday.

In a statement, the Governor said that the people of Tamil Nadu are very nice and friendly. He also said that the state government is committed to providing them security.

  • I want to be part of the change in Indian tennis: Sania Mirza

I want to be part of the change in Indian tennis: Sania Mirza

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The retired Sania Mirza on Saturday said she wants to be a part of the change in Indian tennis and is open to joining sports administration or even become a coach in future.

The 36-year-old from Hyderabad bowed out of international tennis after a first round defeat at the WTA Dubai Duty Free Championships along with American partner Madison Keys last month.

“At this moment, I want to take a break. But I don’t know. I would be very open to the fact that I would like to see a change. Just wanting to see a change, a change does not happen. You have to try and be part of the change,” she told reporters.

“I am happy to be part of the change in whatever capacity that’s possible. I cannot commit to a timeline of when I want to do that. But it is something that I am open to. It’s not something I am against.”

Sania will play two exhibition matches as part of her farewell on Sunday at the Lal Bahadur Stadium here.

“Like I said, if I want to stand on the court and coach. I don’t know. I never say never for things. Because, I don’t know these things. But, I am very open.

“For example, Karman Kaur Thandi was in Dubai last month and she was practicing for two weeks at one of my academies. I was helping her for two weeks.

“I was very happy to do that…Whether I want to do that on a full time basis or not, I don’t know as of now, but I am open to helping,” she added.

Sania, who won six Grand Slam titles, including three women’s doubles with Swiss legend Martina Hingis, said a proper system can only produce champions.

“We need a system to support these young girls. If we have a solid system in place we can produce champions.

“We can’t produce champions every 20, 30 years, we have to produce them every year. If we put a system in place, we can do that. If we want to send our kids to sports, literally there is no one here to go to,” she said.

Talking about the reasons which prompted her to quit, Sania said: “Well, my body… I have had so many surgeries. That is taking me 45 minutes to warm up before the actual warm-up of the match. The physio is working on me more time than I am actually on the tennis court.

“I have had a 20-year long career. I wanted to finish on my own terms. I want to finish when I am still playing well. I want to finish when I am on top. I also want different things in life now.

“And the most important thing is, I would like to spend more time with my son… I feel like my priorities are different today.”
