    Banihal/Jammu, Jul 10 (GNS): Traffic movement on the Jammu-Srinagar highway remained suspended for the third day on Monday and the authorities said that the thoroughfare shall remain closed on Tuesday despite stepped up efforts to restore the road amid improved weather conditions, officials said.

    The highway, , the only surface link connecting Kashmir Valley with outside world, was shut for traffic on Saturday following heavy rains overnight that triggered multiple landslides and also washed away a portion of nearly 40-metre road stretch near Panthiyal tunnel in Ramban district.

     “Collective efforts from the Administration and NHAI, put in throughout the day, resulted in substantial improvement in the road condition. However, complete restoration is expected to take some more time,” police said in a statement issued here to GNS. “Accordingly, it has been decided by the Administration to keep the traffic on Highway suspended for tomorrow also i.e. 11.07.2023 (Tuesday).” HMVs have been advised to take Mughal Road for journey from Jammu to Srinagar and vice versa.

    SRINAGAR: The authorities on Tuesday said that May 10 and 11 will be “Traffic Dry Days” on Srinagar-Leh in view of the road widening work along the Sonamarg-Minimarg stretch.

    According to a communique,  SSP Traffic Rural Kashmir advised Ladakh-bound motorists to avoid travel on these days.

    “In view of widening work along the Sonamarg-Minimarg stretch of SSG road, owing to fresh snow fall in upper reaches of Baltal and Zojila, May 10 and 11 would be Traffic Dry Days on Srinagar-Ladakh road,” reads the communique.

    “As such all Ladakh bound motorists are informed through the medium of this advisory that they shall avoid travel towards Ladakh on the dates designated as Traffic Dry Days,” it reads—(KNO)

    Srinagar, May 3: Mutton dealers from Kashmir Valley suffered huge losses after traffic police stopped trucks carrying livestock towards Valley on the Srinagar-Jammu highway for more than 48 hours.

    All Kashmir Wholesale Mutton Dealers Association said that stopping trucks carrying livestock was ‘unwarranted’ and they are shocked over the callous attitude of the traffic police for not responding to their distress calls.

    “We called SSP Traffic National Highway. There was no response, even the SSP Traffic didn’t bother to respond to our text messages,” All Kashmir Wholesale Mutton Dealers Association told the news agency Kashmir News Trust adding that the control room officials also didn’t listen to them.

    The Association said that at least 48 trucks laden with livestock were stopped near Udhampur on Dhor Road. “Despite repeated requests, drivers were not allowed to move ahead.”

    The Association added that every truck suffered a mortality loss of 2 to 3 sheep. “The estimated loss due to ‘unnecessary’ stoppage of trucks is over Rs 25 lakh. After forcing to stop for over 48 hours, these trucks were allowed to move towards Valley at 5 PM on Tuesday.”

    Notably, the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir Mr Arun Kumar Mehta had recently directed authorities to ensure hassle-free movement of trucks on the national highway. He had asked authorities not to stop any truck on the highway.

    “I was supposed to supply meat to several parties but failed to do so, as the supply didn’t reach in time,” said Mehrajuddin Ganaie, one of the members of All Kashmir Wholesale Mutton Dealers Association.

    He said mutton dealers have been continuously facing huge losses as this business has become a source of losses instead of profit due to the callous attitude of the authorities.

    SSP Traffic didn’t respond to the phone call, however, one of the traffic officials said that trucks were halted due to one-way traffic near the Nashri area as it is prone to landslides. “If we allow two-way traffic near Nashiri, there will be a traffic jam and it may pose a risk to lives,” he said.     SRINAGAR: Authorities have closed Srinagar-Kargil highway due to fresh snowfall while vehicular movement has been badly affected due to breakdown of a big trailer truck on Jammu-Srinagar national highway at Dalwas, officials said Friday.

    An official said that “up HMVs tail has been delayed due to the breakdown of a big trailer at Dalwas.”

    He advised commuters to cooperate with the traffic officials manning the highway.

    On Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gomri (SSG) road, which connects Ladakh with Kashmir valley, he said that the route has been closed for traffic due to fresh snowfall. Pertinently, the road was partially opened for traffic on Thursday after remaining closed for 11 days due to snow avalanches at Zojila Pass.

    The closure has affected traffic in the area, with commuters advised to find alternative routes. Authorities are working hard to clear the snow and reopen the road as soon as possible, but the process is expected to take some time.

    Meanwhile, the Mughal road continues to remain closed for traffic. The road, which connects Kashmir valley with Rajouri and Poonch regions, remains shut in winters due to heavy snowfall. The road is expected to open for traffic soon as authorities are clearing the snow from the historic road.

    Officials said that a poultry chicken truck on the way from Jammu towards Srinagar came under a massive landslide at Shabanbas area. “Soon after the incident, a rescue operation was launched at the site by a police team alongside NGO ‘Banihal Volunteers’, during which both the truck occupants were rescued in injured conditions”, they said adding both the persons were taken to SDH Banihal for immediate treatment.
