Pakistanis drown under cost of living as inflation hits all-time high

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Pakistans monthly inflation blew past forecasts in March and soared to a nearly all-time high level — 35.4 per cent — from a year earlier, with people feeling more pain from some of the fastest rising consumer prices amid straining budgets as cost of living continues to outstrip average incomes, according to a media report.

The fresh inflation reading issued by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) on Saturday also multiplied the prospects of a further rise in interest rates in the upcoming monetary policy committee (MPC) meeting scheduled for April 4, Geo News reported.

The pace of increase in the prices endorsed the expectations of the Finance Ministry that said inflation was expected to stay at an elevated level owing to market frictions caused by relative demand and supply gap of essential items, exchange rate depreciation, and recent upward adjustment of administered prices of petrol and diesel, the report said.

    MS Education Academy

The monthly inflation rate, however, declined to 3.7 per cent in March over February.

The inflation situation has worsened to its worst, steeping the masses, whose purchasing power has eroded by leaps and bounds, into misery, as the price of almost every edible item has gone through the roof over a period of months.

Core inflation, which was calculated after excluding the volatile energy and food prices, increased in March to 18.6 per cent in urban areas and 23.1 per cent in rural areas.

Analysts believe Pakistan is now heading towards hyperinflation a situation when prices are out of control and in the territory of a 50 per cent surge, Geo News reported.

  • Gold rates in Hyderabad reach near all-time high

Gold rates in Hyderabad reach near all-time high

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Gold rates in Hyderabad and other cities in India on Friday climbed to a near all-time high. The rates of 24-carat and 22-carat gold reached Rs. 60, 0000, and Rs. 55, 0000 respectively.

In the current month, the rates of the yellow metal saw nearly a seven percent jump.

In the international market, gold rates reached nearly USD 2000 per ounce. There are speculations that it may breach the all-time high of USD 2072 per ounce.

Reasons for rise in gold rates in Hyderabad

Market experts attribute the rise in gold rates in Hyderabad and other Indian cities to the softening of the US dollar rate and the slipping of the dollar index below 102 levels.

Additionally, the collapse of two regional banks in the US and the crisis in a Swiss bank have also contributed to the increase in gold rates in the international market.

The Federal Reserve’s decision on interest rates has also played a key role in the fluctuation of gold rates.

Rates depend on demand and supply

As gold is also a commodity, its rates depend on demand and supply. During times of uncertainty, the rates of the yellow metal increase drastically as investors consider it a safe haven.

However, during market boom periods, its rates return to normal as investors start exploring options that can give them higher returns when compared to gold.

Gold is not only seen as an investment option as many people purchase the yellow for weddings, festivals, and other occasions.

With the rise in gold rates in Hyderabad and other Indian cities, it is likely that the demand for yellow may decrease in the short term.

  • Amritpal Singh says in new video he is in high spirits, calls for ‘Sarbat Khalsa’

Amritpal Singh says in new video he is in high spirits, calls for ‘Sarbat Khalsa’

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: Amid a police crackdown on Amritpal Singh and his outfit, the pro-Khalistan preacher appeared in a video on Wednesday, calling for a ‘Sarbat Khalsa’ congregation on Baisakhi to discuss issues related to the Sikh community and saying he is in high spirits.

The fugitive said if the Punjab government wanted only to arrest him, they would have come to his home and he would have given up. He claimed the police action against him was an “attack” on the Sikh community.

“As far as my arrest is concerned, it is in the hands of God,” he said in Punjabi in the undated video.

“Main chardhi kala chaan, koi ve mera vaal vinga nahi kar sakya (I am in high spirits. Nobody could harm me),” he said, adding he did not fear being arrested earlier nor he does now.

There was no official word on the purported video, which appeared as the Punjab Police try to close in on Amritpal Singh. Some reports have also suggested he might surrender as the security in Amritsar and Talwandi Sabo area in Bathinda has been tightened.

Since the crackdown began on March 18, the 30-year-old radical preacher has been on the run, using different vehicles and changing his appearance multiple times. He managed to escape the police dragnet when his cavalcade was intercepted in Jalandhar district.

Several videos and images have appeared on social media that purportedly showed him alone and with his aides in different areas.

The crackdown on his outfit Waris Punjab De started weeks after Amritpal Singh’s supporters stormed a police station in Ajnala, near Amritsar, to secure the release of one his followers. The Punjab government has slapped the stringent National Security Act against him and some of his close aides.

In the latest video, Amritpal Singh urged the Akal Takht Jathedar to call a ‘Sarbat Khalsa’ to discuss the issues related to the Sikh community and asked members of the community to participate in large numbers.

“If we have to save the youth and Punjab then we should be part of the Sarbat Khalsa,” he said in his appeal. “For a very long time, our community has got entangled with holding small morchas on many issues,” he said.

“We know the path which we have tread, we will have to face all this. It was our duty to raise voice against it,” he said.

The radical preacher also slammed police for invoking the National Security Act against his associates and sending some of them to Dibrugarh jail in Assam.

Amritpal Singh, who wore a black turban and a shawl in the video, said he was appearing before the Sikh community for the first time after the police crackdown was launched as he wanted to speak to them about whatever happened that day.

“If the government’s intention had only been to arrest me, it could have come to my house and arrested me, I would have given up,” he said. “But the way adopted by the government to deploy lakhs of cops and laying a cordon, the Almighty brought us out of that,” he said.

Accusing the Punjab government of not allowing his ‘Khalsa Vaheer’ (religious procession) earlier, he said he lost touch with what was happening in the state when the mobile internet services were suspended by the state government.

“I have now seen some news showing what is happening in Punjab,” he said.

Referring to the police crackdown, he claimed that the Punjab government has made Sikh youths accused in the matter and sent to sent to jails. “They did not even spare women and children and also sent even handicapped youth to jails.”

“This was the same thing the Beant Singh government had done with Sikhs,” he alleged.

He also thanked people for supporting him during the crackdown.

“But we need to understand the present situation that it was not only an issue of my arrest. It was a matter of an attack on the Sikh community. I did not fear arrest earlier nor do I now,” he said.

Without naming Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the fugitive slammed him for his comments pertaining to the Akal Takht Jathedar who had given a 24-hour ultimatum to the government for the release of Sikh youths from jails.

Amritpal Singh asked the Akal Takht Jathedar to take a tough stand on the matter.

  • British Indian medic backs legal review of COVID vaccine in South Africa High Court

British Indian medic backs legal review of COVID vaccine in South Africa High Court

    [ad_1]

London: Leading UK-based Indian-origin consultant cardiologist Aseem Malhotra is among a group of international experts backing an approach to the High Court of South Africa, calling for an urgent judicial review of Pfizer’s mRNA COVID vaccine products which he fears may be “harmful”.

Lawyers representing the human rights group Freedom Alliance of South Africa (FASA) say the show cause notice was filed on Monday at the High Court of South Africa, Gauteng Division, Pretoria, along with real-world data analysis, which is claimed to show an association with increasing death from both COVID and non-COVID causes in the vaccinated compared to the unvaccinated.

FASA has approached the court to review and set aside the authorisation of Pfizer’s vaccine products on the basis that the authorisation was “unlawful”.

If successful, this could result in the removal of COVID mRNA vaccines from the South African market and also have global implications.

“Having critically appraised the literature and the Pfizer trial data, the evidence is unequivocal,” Malhotra said.

“For the overwhelming majority of people, the Pfizer COVID mRNA vaccine is significantly more harmful than beneficial and likely should never have been approved to be administered to a single human being,” said Malhotra, who himself took two doses of the Pfizer vaccine and is now backing the show cause notice.

“It is alarming to me that the local regulators are encouraging the vaccination of young children in the circumstances. The rollout of the Pfizer vaccine products should, in my opinion, be halted pending a full investigation into how we got this so very wrong. That is, without question, the responsible and ethical move,” he said.

The FASA case, among the first of its kind, is being handled by advocate Erin-Dianne Richards, briefed by Daniel Eloff of Hurter Spies Incorporated in South Africa and is supported by leading medical and scientific professionals from around the world.

Malhotra, among the supporters, believes the case is “factually, medically and scientifically sound”.

Dr Herman Edeling, a specialist neurosurgeon with over 40 years of experience, notes in the founding affidavit that the mRNA vaccine administered as Comirnaty in South Africa should “never have been branded as safe’ and effective’”.

“The applicants in this application call on Pfizer to explain their conduct; they call on the South African regulators and government to hold Pfizer to account and to act in the best interests of the South African public, and they humbly request this Honourable Court to come to their aid in achieving these calls in the interests of the health of the South African public,” said Edeling.

While the notice of the motion was recorded by the South African court registrar on Monday, FASA hopes to announce a date of hearing in due course.

Pfizer’s media office has been approached for a response and it is yet to comment on this development.

  • SC Directs JK High Court To Probe Alleged Unauthorized Staff Recruitment

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday directed the Chief Justice (CJ) of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) High Court to investigate complaints related to the alleged recruitment of administrative staff through unauthorized means at the J&K High Court, Subordinate Courts, State Judicial Academy, Legal Services Authority, and the e-Court Mission Mode Project.

During a hearing on a petition filed by J&K Peoples Forum, a bench consisting of CJI D Y Chandrachud, Justice P S Narasimha, and Justice J B Pardiwala was informed that the petition alleged that the appointment of administrative staff at the J&K High Court, Subordinate Courts, State Judicial Academy, Legal Services Authority, and the e-Court Mission Mode Project were not carried out in accordance with due selection procedures. The petition specifically claimed that the relatives of existing staff members, as well as present and former judges of the High Court, were appointed through unofficial channels.

The bench said: “We will ask the Chief Justice of the High Court to look into the grievance of the petition. Time for filing counter affidavit has been extended. Counter shall be filed by the Registrar of J&K High Court after specifically taking instructions and directions from the CJ of J&K High Court.”

The petition filed challenges appointments made from 2007 onwards that were either temporary or made through advertisements, citing them as “suspicious.” Additionally, the petition presents a list that indicates the current staff members and High Court judges who allegedly provided preferential treatment to their relatives and acquaintances during the recruitment process.

It states: “There are instances where amendments have been made in the existing rules just to facilitate backdoor appointments and or or facilitating the appointment of kin of functionaries against higher cadres who otherwise were eligible only for lower cadres and that that too if selected after a regular legal recruitment process.”

According to the petition, the appointments were made without a transparent selection process. It claims that there was no public notice or advertisement issued, and the selection of appointees was arbitrary. The petition emphasizes that there were several highly qualified candidates who could have been selected if a fair and just selection process was followed.

The petition contended that a large number of daily wagers employed in various courts for over a decade had not been regularised, with only those who had close connections with High Court officers being considered for regularisation.

Furthermore, the petition demanded that the Supreme Court quash these backdoor appointments and direct the respondents to refrain from making any more such appointments. Additionally, the petition implored the apex court to direct a credible agency to conduct an inquiry into the allegations of backdoor appointments of administrative staff in the High Court against both the officials involved in the process of making such appointments and those who have benefited from them.

The petition has been filed through AoR, Raj Kishore Choudhary. (Live Law)

  • Speed Radar Guns To Prevent Stunt Biking, High Speed Driving: SSP Traffic

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: In order to curb high-speed stunt biking and rash driving of vehicles, Traffic Police Srinagar on Monday said they have received a few ‘Speed Radar Guns’, a specialized device to assess the speed of moving vehicles.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for City Traffic, Muzaffar Ahmad Shah while speaking to the media at his office said the department was short of the equipment to measure the speed of moving vehicles, and now they have received an inventory of a few ‘Speed Radar Guns’.

” The device would be used to crack down on high-speed stunt biking,” he said.

“We would be using the speed radar guns, which would assist us in detecting the people who drive erratically and at high speeds,” he said, adding that in the coming months, the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) is going to be activated. The installation of multiple cameras will automatically detect and minimize traffic violations, he added.

Talking about Sunday’s Parimpora incident in which a group of boys riding two-wheelers was seen allegedly harassing a family and said to be involved in stunt biking, the SSP said, “There was a swift action by the Parimpora police station, and the action will serve as an indication to those who are involved in these kinds of acts. Law is very clear about it and nobody can escape.”

Shah said the initiative on underage driving and rash driving was taken last year but the effort can only be successful if parents cooperate.

He urged parents to not allow minors to drive either four-wheelers or two-wheelers, and those who do so should make sure their children have all the required paperwork, including a driver’s license, and that they are wearing helmets when riding two-wheelers. (KNO)
