New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday said that they have arrested middleman Jeetendra Prasad and Delhi government school Hindi teacher Dinesh Singh Kushwaha for allegedly receiving Rs 2.60 crore from an accused involved in Powerbank app (Chinese loan app) case for getting his work done.

This is the same Chinese app by which Chinese lenders cheated Indian nationals to the tune of Rs 250 crore.

The two were produced before a special PMLA court which sent them to ED custody till March 3.

“Cash of Rs 47.5 lakh, forged summons, notices, duplicate official stamps were recovered during searches conducted at the house of Jeetendra Prasad,” the official said.

  • How iPhone passcode is helping thieves steal your money and data

How iPhone passcode is helping thieves steal your money and data

    [ad_1]

New York: The passcode in iPhones that helps people unlock their devices is now giving thieves easy access to steal their money and data at public places.

According to Wall Street Journal, using a remarkably low-tech trick, thieves watch iPhone owners tap their passcodes, then steal their targets’ phones and their digital lives.

A 31-year-old senior economist at a workforce intelligence startup lost all photos, contacts and notes in her iPhone 13 Pro Max which was snatched at a bar in Midtown Manhattan and about $10,000 vanished from her bank account in just 24 hours.

“With only the iPhone and its passcode, an interloper can within seconds change the password associated with the iPhone owner’s Apple ID,” said the report.

This would lock the victim out of their account, which includes anything stored in iCloud.

“The thief can also often loot the phone’s financial apps since the passcode can unlock access to all the device’s stored passwords,” it added.

When the password change is complete, the software offers an option to force other Apple devices, such as Macs or iPads, to sign out of the Apple account, so a victim couldn’t turn to those devices to regain access.

The Apple software never requires the user to enter an older password before setting a new one.

With the new password, the thief can disable Find My iPhone. Disabling Find My iPhone feature also allows the thief to resell the iPhone.

As Apple spokesperson said that iPhone is the most secure consumer mobile device, and “we work tirelessly every day to protect all our users from new and emerging threats”.

“We sympathise with users who have had this experience and we take all attacks on our users very seriously, no matter how rare,” the spokesperson was quoted as saying.

“We will continue to advance the protections to help keep user accounts secure.”

Nearly all of the victims had their iPhones stolen while they were out at night socialising at public places, pubs and bars.

In all cases, the iPhone owners were locked out of their Apple accounts.

“They then discovered thousands of dollars in financial thefts, including some combination of Apple Pay charges, drained bank accounts linked to phone apps and money taken from PayPal’s Venmo and other money-sending apps,” the report elaborated.

The same vulnerability is there in Google’s Android mobile operating system but the “higher resale value of iPhones makes them a far more common target”, according to law enforcement officials.

“Our sign-in and account-recovery policies try to strike a balance between allowing legitimate users to retain access to their accounts in real-world scenarios and keeping the bad actors out,” a Google spokesperson was quoted as saying.

Apple recently introduced the ability to use hardware security keys, little USB dongles, to protect the Apple ID.

  • A new nonprofit group is helping DeSantis go national

A new nonprofit group is helping DeSantis go national

    [ad_1]

    election 2024 republicans 65483

The person familiar with the nonprofit noted that it plans to host events with politicians other than DeSantis in the future, and it has invited other governors to join events similar to the ones DeSantis spoke at this week. But with the new group, DeSantis joins a slate of other Republican presidential contenders, including former Vice President Mike Pence and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, who are benefitting from nonprofit issue advocacy groups. Some of the nonprofits have been active for years, supporting their policies, raising money, building large email lists and paying staff that will form the backbones of presidential campaigns launched later this year.

Corporate records in Michigan show that the new group, which has also launched a bare-bones website, formed on Jan. 30.

The outfit is overseen by Tori Sachs, a Michigan-based Republican strategist who has been a longtime adviser to GOP Rep. John James. Sachs has also worked for several conservative issue advocacy groups, including Michigan Freedom Fund and Michigan Rising Action.

Those briefed on And to the Republic’s plans say it is expected to hold additional events supporting DeSantis. The person familiar with the organization said it would be “announcing events for the future in the coming weeks and months.” An Eventbrite page lists the group as the host of an upcoming event for the governor in North Venice, Fla.

DeSantis is taking steps to raise his national visibility ahead of a likely presidential bid. Next week, he is launching a new book, “The Courage to be Free: Florida’s Blueprint for America’s Revival.” And later this week, DeSantis is hosting a three-day donor retreat at the Four Seasons Palm Beach, which is expected to draw around 150 supporters.

Should he enter the race for the White House, DeSantis would start as the leading GOP rival to former President Donald Trump — who has in turn derided the governor on social media as “disloyal,” “Meatball Ron” and “Ron DeSanctimonious.”

DeSantis, who is not expected to formally launch a bid until after Florida’s legislative session ends later this spring, has brushed aside the insults, saying that he doesn’t spend his time “trying to smear other Republicans.”

  • Canada is ‘elbows deep’ in helping Haiti, Trudeau says

Canada is ‘elbows deep’ in helping Haiti, Trudeau says

Trudeau announced Canada will send two navy vessels to the Haitian coast as part of a surveillance and intelligence operation.

The announcement is the latest in Canada’s piecemeal response, short of the military intervention requested by acting Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

Trudeau said the deployment of the navy vessels is intended to deter gangs from using waterways as “an extra sphere of influence.” They will not be there to intercept migrants, he added.

“They are there to assist the Haitian National Police in their efforts to control the gang activity in Port-au-Prince and along the coast,” Trudeau told reporters, wrapping two days of meetings with Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders.

Haiti and climate change topped the leaders’ agendas.

In addition to the two ships, Canada will airlift three MRAPS (mine-resistant light armored vehicles), purchased by the Haitian National Police, to the country “in the coming days.”

The Canadian leader said his government’s focus is to intervene in an “atrocious situation” by strengthening the Haitian National Police. “What’s happening in Haiti is absolutely heartbreaking — and we need to do everything we can that will help.”

Both the White House and Canadian government have for months emphasized the need to find a Haitian-led solution to prevent the country from descending further into lawlessness.

State Department spokesperson Ned Price told reporters Tuesday that discussions continue with Canada and other partners in the hemisphere, the Organization of American States and the United Nations about what can be done to bring stability and security to Haiti.

A Haitian-led response has yet to emerge, and enduring interlaced humanitarian, political and security crises risk plummeting the country into further misery.

Canada has leaned on sanctions as a tool to choke financial flows to Haitian elites and gangs linked to violence in the country — a strategy that saw the addition of two names to its list of 17 sanctioned individuals Thursday.

  • NASA satellites are helping Turkey, Syria earthquake response

NASA satellites are helping Turkey, Syria earthquake response

    [ad_1]

Washington: After the massive earthquakes that struck southern Turkey and western Syria on February 6 and killed thousands, NASA on Saturday said it is working to share its aerial views and data from space to aid relief and recovery workers, as well as improve its ability to model and predict such events.

Scenes collected before and after the earthquake were used by a team of scientists from the Earth Observatory of Singapore and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California to create something called a damage proxy map for Turkey.

These maps compare before and after radar images of a given event to see how the landscape has changed.

“NASA’s hearts and minds are with those impacted by the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.

“NASA is our eyes in the sky, and our teams of experts are working hard to provide valuable information from our Earth-observing fleet to first responders on the ground,” he added.

One of NASA’s key capabilities is an expertise with synthetic aperture radar, or SAR.

Viewing Earth in all weather conditions, day or night, SAR is used to measure how the ground moves and built landscape changes after this type of event.

“We don’t know everyone who is using this information or how, but we are fortunate to have heard back from a few groups. For instance, the World Central Kitchen – which is providing food to those who’ve been displaced – have let us know they make use of it,” said Lori Schultz, NASA’s disaster coordinator for this earthquake.

In addition to assessing damage, NASA scientists use space- and ground-based observations to improve the agency’s ability to understand related events that cascade from the original natural disaster.

While not in use yet, NASA scientists are hoping to add a new tool to assess the aftermath of the quake.

The Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation, or EMIT, instrument was launched to the International Space Station in July 2022.

As part of its observations of the composition of material in Earth’s atmosphere, it can assess methane emissions.

When passing over the earthquake site, measurements of increased or new emissions could point to events not otherwise easily spotted from space.

As search and rescue efforts continued for a sixth straight day on Saturday to find more survivors, the number of people killed following the devastating earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria on February 6 has reached at least 23,831.
