Congress garners support for Rahul Gandhi in Amethi

    [ad_1]

Amethi: Congress provincial president Ajay Rai on Saturday said people of Amethi are Rahul Gandhi’s strength, asking them to stand by the former MP just as they have always supported the Gandhi family in the past.

Alleging that the sitting BJP MP Smriti Irani lied to the people to get votes in the Lok Sabha elections, Rai said she had promised to provide sugar at Rs 13 rupees per kg, but today the price of sugar is not hidden from anyone.

On the other hand, the Gandhi family never lied like this for votes, Rai said, stressing that Amethi is in the heart and mind of Rahul Gandhi and he can never forget it.

“People of Amethi are the strength of Rahul Gandhi, the way the people of Amethi have supported the Gandhi family, in the same way we would like them to once again stand with Rahul Gandhi,” Rai said while talking to media persons here.

Amethi remained the stronghold of the Gandhi family till 2019 when BJP’s Smriti Irani defeated Rahul Gandhi, who held the seat for the longest period, from 2004 to 2019. The Uttar Pradesh constituency has also been represented by his mother, father and uncle in the past.

Alleging that Rahul Gandhi is being continuously harassed, he said, “Rahul Gandhi had given a speech in Karnataka and BJP changed the state and filed a case in Gujarat.”

“These people took the case to another state and filed a case,” he said referring to the defamation case leading to the disqualification of Gandhi following conviction and two-year jail term.

Rai said the Modi government is so worried that it is doing everything in haste.

“His membership was terminated the very next day after he was sentenced to 2 years and was asked to vacate the house after giving 40 hours. BJP is only working on how to weaken Rahul and Congress.”

Referring to the Hindenburg report on Adani, Rai said neither the leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nor the prime minister are saying anything on the matter, rather it is being said that the “attack on Adani is an attack on India.”

“Today the BJP government is trying to suppress the voice of democracy, they are going to any level to suppress their opponents and constitutional institutions are being misused, we have seen all this,” he said.

“We are celebrating Amrit Mahotsav the Amrit Kaal of democracy but democracy is being strangled. Besides, the questions raised by the opposition are not being answered and those raising them are being disqualified,” he said, adding that this is very unfortunate.

“Ours is a democratic country and our forefathers have made great sacrifices for its freedom. We have fought a long battle, if there is any danger to democracy, we are not going to sit silently, it is being opposed in the whole country, opposition parties are also opposing this incident,” Rai added.

After the conviction for his remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, now another defamation case has been filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the Haridwar Court for his alleged comment referring to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as the ‘Kauravas of the twenty-first century.’

Kamal Bhadauria, an RSS worker, filed a criminal defamation lawsuit. The matter will be heard by the Court on April 12.

“Kauravas of the 21st century wear Khakhi half-pants and run shakhas. Besides them stand two to three richest people of the country,” he allegedly said in his remarks.

The petition further alleged that Gandhi insulted ‘Pujaris’ in his speech and hurt the feelings of the people of the country.

Gandhi allegedly made these remarks at the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Haryana.

  • Disqualifying Rahul Gandhi from Lok Sabha part of conspiracy: Rajasthan CM

Disqualifying Rahul Gandhi from Lok Sabha part of conspiracy: Rajasthan CM

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday attacked the Narendra Modi government, saying the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from Lok Sabha was part of a conspiracy that was hatched following the “massive success” of his Bharat Jodo Yatra.

Gandhi was disqualified as an MP following his conviction and two-year sentencing by a Surat Court last week in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his “Modi surname” remark.

The chief minister, while addressing Congress workers at a Sammelan, also alleged that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, who hails from Kota, was under pressure and did not allow Gandhi to speak in Parliament.

    MS Education Academy

“Rising prices, unemployment, social disharmony and widening gap between the poor and the rich were the issues of the Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra,” Gehlot said in Kota.

“Some people afraid by the personality of Rahul Gandhi that emerged out of the massive success of the Bharat Jodo Yatra hatched a conspiracy against him…,” he said on the issue of Gandhi’s disqualification.

The BJP will have to face the consequences of Rahul Gandhi’s expulsion from Parliament, Gehlot said in Jaipur while addressing a meeting of party workers.

The entire opposition is united on the issue of Gandhi’s disqualification and this unity is a good sign, the CM said at the meeting held in Sanganer.

The BJP has been attacking Gandhi, a former Congress chief, over his “democracy under attack” remarks in the UK and demanding he apologise, and has criticised him over his 2019 comment.

Before his disqualification, Gandhi was not allowed to speak in Parliament and he had also approached the Lok Sabha speaker, the chief minister said, adding that it was Birla’s duty to allow Gandhi to speak.

But the Congress leader was being forced to apologise and this meant that “Om Birla ji was working under pressure and if he had been aware of his position, and of dignity and glory of Rajasthan, his gesture should have been different”, Gehlot said.

Referring to Rajasthan assembly Speaker CP Joshi, the chief minister said he dealt with matters of members of both ruling and opposition parties with impartiality.

“Those who become speaker of a House no longer remains a member of a party,” Gehlot said and added that currently the post Birla holds, is not an ordinary post.

“Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, who hails from Kota, should function impartially in Lok Sabha but he is not able to function impartially and is working under pressure,” the chief minister said.

The Congress succeeded in maintaining unity of such a grand nation like India, but the ways the Narendra Modi government and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) have adopted is unfortunate for the country, Gehlot said and told party workers that their fight against them was ideological.

He said the Congress, which made several sacrifices during the country’s freedom struggle, does not need nationalism lessons from the BJP and the RSS.

“They (BJP and RSS) talk about India and nationalism will we learn nationalism from them? Those who got the country freedom will learn nationalism from them?” Gehlot said as he questioned the contribution of the BJP and the RSS in the country’s independence struggle.

Rahul Gandhi is a morally corrupt politician: Himanta Biswa Sarma

    [ad_1]

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday alleged that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is a “morally corrupt politician”, recalling his 2013 opposition to an amendment of a bill that would have allowed a convicted MP to remain a parliamentarian.

Sarma said the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had tried to bring the amendment, but Gandhi “denounced him publicly” and “tore” a copy of the ordinance.

“And now, Congress President Mallikarjun Khagde is demanding that convicted MP’s should not be disqualified,” he said.

“Rather than growing a spine, he is misguiding Kharge to protest against his own stand, which he had taken in 2013. I have not seen a politician in this country so morally corrupt like Rahul Gandhi,” Sarma told reporters on the sidelines of a programme here.

Gandhi should tell people of the country he stands for the cause that a convicted MP/MLA should be disqualified immediately, the chief miniser said.

The former Congress president was recently convicted by a Surat court in a defamation case and subsequently disqualified as a Lok Sabha MP.

  • Gandhi family is Cong pivot, keeps party united: Rajasthan CM Gehlot

Gandhi family is Cong pivot, keeps party united: Rajasthan CM Gehlot

    [ad_1]

Jodhpur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday called the Gandhi family the pivot of the Congress and said it held the party together.

Addressing a meeting of Congress workers, he accused the BJP of deploying a paid “army of trolls” on social media to malign the image of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

“This army has been after Rahul Gandhi for the past eight or nine years. Whatnot has been said about him on social media by their trolls’ army to malign his image,” the Congress leader said, alleging that the BJP has paid thousands of people for this.

He said there is a reason why the Gandhi family is considered the “pivot” of the party. “If this family is there, the Congress will remain united,” he said.”They have the capability of taking everyone along – all castes, all religions and people speaking every language.”

Gehlot was accompanied by Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Govind Singh Dotasra and the AICC in-charge for Rajasthan Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa in the Jodhpur trip.

The party is protesting Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha following his conviction by a Gujarat court over a remark on the Modi surname.

The CM repeated his allegation that Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat was involved in the Sanjeevani Credit Cooperative Society scam that defrauded a large number of investors.

The minister has earlier denied the allegations and reported the “defamation attempt” to the police in Delhi.

Gehlot charged that democracy is at risk under the Bharatiya Janata Party government at the Centre.

“I see in them arrogance and autocracy. The way they conspired to target Rahul Gandhi shows that they were scared of his shining image globally after the Bharat Jodo Yatra,” he claimed.

Gehlot accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of evading questions in Parliament on the Adani Group, and said this deepened “suspicion” about his relationship with the tycoon.

  • Why is public’s retirement money being invested in Adani?: Rahul Gandhi to Centre

Why is public’s retirement money being invested in Adani?: Rahul Gandhi to Centre

    [ad_1]

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking why the public’s retirement money is being invested in Adani companies even after various allegations were levelled against the firm.

Disqualified as Lok Sabha MP on Friday after he was convicted and sentenced to a two-year jail term in a defamation case by a Surat court, the Congress chief took to Twitter stating, “LIC’s capital, to Adani! SBI’s capital, to Adani! EPFO’s capital too, to Adani! Why is public’s retirement money being invested in Adani’s companies even after ‘Modani’ exposed?”

“Mr Prime Minister, no investigation, no answer! Why so much of fear,” he asked in a tweet in Hindi.

Controversy erupted after Adani Group stocks crashed after US-based short seller Hindenburg Research made allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share-price manipulation against it.

However, the Gautam Adani-led group has dismissed the charges as lies, saying it complies with all laws and disclosure requirements.

Meanwhile, according to a recent report, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has continued to invest in two Adani stocks despite the rout following the entire Hindenburg saga.

“EPFO continues to invest in Adani Ports and Adani Enterprises, and will keep doing so till September at least unless the organisation reworks its investment approach in this week’s meeting,” The Hindu reported.

After the Adani group lost over 100 billion dollars in valuation post scathing allegations by US-based Hindenburg Research, state-run LIC was criticised for having over 4 billion dollars in exposure to companies from the group, as per Reuters.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the State Bank of India (SBI) has given loans of Rs 21,000 crore (2.6 billion dollars) to Adani firms.

Taking a jibe at the BJP-led Centre, Rahul Gandhi has been demanding an investigation into the matter.

He further alleged that his disqualification from the Lok Sabha recently was due to him raising questions on the Adani issue.

“I will continue to do so even if he is disqualified from Parliament for life,” asserted Rahul.

  • Another Mahatma Gandhi statue vandalised in Canada

Another Mahatma Gandhi statue vandalised in Canada

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Another statue of Mahatma Gandhi was vandalised at a university campus in Burnaby, Canada, the Consulate General of India in Vancouver announced on Tuesday, just days after another statue was targeted in Ontario.

In the latest incident, the statue had been placed at Peace Square at Simon Fraser Univerity’s Burnaby campus.

“We strongly condemn heinous crime of vandalising the statute of harbinger of peace Mahatma Gandhiji, @SFU Burnaby campus,” the Consulate General tweeted.

“The Canadian authorities are urged to investigate the matter urgently and bring the perpetrators to justice swiftly,” it added.

    More details are awaited.

The incident comes just after anti-India elements defaced and spray-painted a statue of Mahatma Gandhi near the City Hall in the town of Hamilton in Ontario on March 23.

While Hamilton Police said they are investigating the case, attacks by Khalistani backers on Indian installations and temples are on the rise in the North American nation.

Starting 2023, a string of attacks has been unleashed upon Hindu temples across Canada with close to half-a-dozen incidents of vandalism, spiteful graffiti, break-ins and burglaries.

In July last year, the statue of Mahatma Gandhi located at the Vishnu Mandir in Richmond Hill in the Greater Toronto Area was vandalised and defaced with graphic words.

Prove Savarkar apologised: Hindutva ideologue’s grandson to Rahul Gandhi

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The grandson of late Hindutva ideologue VD Savarkar has sought action against Rahul Gandhi for his comments and also challenged the Congress leader to show documents that prove he had apologised to the British.

Gandhi’s “My name is not Savarkar, my name is Gandhi and Gandhi does not offer an apology to anyone” remark has drawn fire from BJP.

The former Congress chief made this remark while addressing a press conference after being disqualified from Lok Sabha.

Calling such comments childish, Savarkar’s grandson Ranjit Savarkar on Monday said, “Rahul Gandhi is saying he won’t apologise as he isn’t Savarkar. I challenge him to show documents that prove Savarkar apologised”.

“Using the names of patriots to promote politics is wrong and deplorable. Action must be taken,” Savarkar said.

  • Rahul Gandhi believes he is above law: Smriti Irani on his disqualification from LS

Rahul Gandhi believes he is above law: Smriti Irani on his disqualification from LS

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Smriti Irani on Monday called the disqualification of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as Lok Sabha MP an ‘operation of the law,’ demonstrating that no person was above law in the country.

She also charged that Gandhi believed that he was above law after his disqualification from the Lok Sabha, following his conviction in a defamation case.

“It was made to appear as though it was the central government which disqualified Rahul Gandhi as an MP. It is a directive of the court,” Irani pointed out during a Yuva Samvada event organised by Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya.

The programme was organised as part of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha’s outreach programme for the first time voters ahead of the 2023 Assembly Elections in Karnataka.

Irani alleged that the person concerned’ made a racial slur not against one individual, but against the entire OBC community.

“A case in the court was fought on merits and evidence. If you read the judgement, it says the person concerned’ did not defend himself. Either someone in his organisation did not want to defend him or Rahul Gandhi thinks he is above the law,” the Union Minister said.

She noted that once the court ordered conviction, it is incumbent upon the speaker of the house to follow constitutional practice and accordingly, the Speaker took a decision.

“Should we as a democracy say that you can indulge in a racial slur against an entire community and not be held accountable by law just because you are Rahul Gandhi? People from his party have said on record that the law for the average Indian be separate and that law dealing with the Gandhi family be separate. The law spoke, hence let the law be followed.”

Referring to Gandhi’s recent remarks in London that he cannot speak in Indian Universities, she said, “Gandhi had been to universities in India, interacted with students, but no government stopped him from interacting. This means that he was lying in England.”

Speaking of the Nirbhaya fund, Irani alleged that it was set up during the Congress-led UPA rule, which remained unused for the first two years.

When Modi assumed office as Prime Minister in 2014, projects worth Rs 9,000 crore were planned for women’s safety across the country. For the first time in the history of India, an anti-human trafficking unit was set up in every district of our country, she added.

  • Disqualified as MP, Rahul Gandhi asked to vacate official bungalow by April 22

Disqualified as MP, Rahul Gandhi asked to vacate official bungalow by April 22

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was on Monday served a notice to vacate the government bungalow allotted to him by April 22 following his disqualification as a member of Lok Sabha after his conviction in a defamation case last week, official sources said.

The Housing Committee of the Lok Sabha took the decision following which the secretariat of the House served the notice on the former Congress president, a Z-plus protectee who has been living in the 12, Tughlaq Lane bungalow since 2005.

The development is likely to further escalate the political fight between the BJP and the Congress and its allies who have targeted the government over the issue.

A local court in Gujarat had convicted Gandhi in a criminal defamation case on March 23 and sentenced him to two years in jail. The two-year jail term triggered his disqualification as Lok Sabha member from the date of the verdict. Gandhi was granted bail to allow him to appeal to a higher court in a month.

A senior official said an MP has to vacate the official bungalow within one month of losing his membership.

Sources said Gandhi can write to the Housing Committee seeking an extension, and the panel can take a decision depending on the validity of the reasons cited by him.

The committee has 11 members drawn from different parties and is headed BJP MP C R Patil.

The notification issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat was marked to various departments, including the Directorate of Estates and the New Delhi Municipal Council, for necessary actions.

Congress member Manickam Tagore, who is a member of the committee, hit out at the government over the decision and linked it to Gandhi’s trenchant criticism of its policies.

When Gandhi spoke against a few corporate groups getting all benefits under this government, his security was given to the CRPF from the SPG and when he spoke on February 7 about “Adani & Modi friendship” he was disqualified as an MP, Tagore alleged.

“When RG spoke on March 25 the about Mo-Adani… 27th March they want to take the house also. Wah Narender baba. What else can you take from him now? Rahul Gandhi speaks truth and he is fighting for India against the wealth being gifted to Adani and make him super rich,” he tweeted.
