Muslim clerics seek withdrawal of FIRs for offering namaaz on road

    [ad_1]

Kanpur: Prominent Muslim clerics in Kanpur have strongly opposed the FIRs registered against hundreds of people for offering prayers on roads on the last Friday of Ramzan and Eid.

Terming the police action ‘unjustifiable’, the clerics, who demanded that the cases be withdrawn, asked if the government or the district administration had decided that no religious event be held in public.

Citing their displeasure, the clerics, who met the Kanpur police commissioner, said in a memorandum: “All of us are guilty of the crime. Arrest not only the 1,700 people booked, but thousands of others also for the crimes mentioned in the FIRs.”

The delegation that met the police chief included Shahr Qazi (Bareli) Mushtaq Mushahidi, Shahr Qazi (Deobandi) Qari Mamoor Ahmed and a dozen other clerics under the banner of Ulema Ahle Sunnat Mushwarati Board.

Last week, the Kanpur police had lodged three FIRs in Bajaria, Jajmau and Babupurwa against over 1,700 people for offering prayers on roads and defying the IPC section 144 that was in force.

The charges were IPC sections 186 (obstructing a public servant in discharging duties), 188 (disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant), 283 (causing danger, obstruction or injury to any person in any public way), 341 (wrongful restraint, and 353 (criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty).

“Such an incident has never happened during festivals that are observed with peace and harmony. The FIRs are aimed at tearing apart the social fabric. Either they be withdrawn or thousands of us who prayed that day will offer their arrest,” Mushahidi said.

The Kanpur police, however, did not respond to the demands put forth by the clerics before the police commissioner.

Lucknow: Two FIRs have been lodged for irregularities in an army recruitment drive that was conducted specially for civilians for the posts of cooks, washermen, and other helping staff in March.

Some candidates used solvers while taking the written exam and this use of unfair means got exposed during scrutiny.

Lt Colonel of Army Medicine Core headquarters, P.K. Singh lodged a case against a miscreant for taking an exam at the place of another candidate.

The officials entrusted with the job to conduct examinations checked the academic credentials of an examinee named Rohan Singh of Agra who had applied for the post of washerman.

“The photos pasted on the original form of this examinee did not match with the one clicked during the written exam. When he was summoned for presenting his academic credentials, the suspect claimed the photo was not his. This needed a police probe, so a case had to be registered,” an officer said.

Another youth was accused of being helped by another person to clear his written exam for the post of cook at AMC.

It was alleged that Deepu of Agra appeared for the exam held on March 12 and March 15 in place of Hemant of Mathura.

  • Delhi Police lodges 2 FIRs over sexual harassment allegations against Brji Bhushan

Delhi Police lodges 2 FIRs over sexual harassment allegations against Brji Bhushan

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi Police Friday registered two FIRs in connection with sexual harassment allegations levelled by women wrestlers against Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

On the complaints received from female wrestlers, two FIRs have been registered at the Connaught Place police station, a senior police officer said.

The first FIR pertains to allegations levelled by a minor which has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act along with relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code concerning outraging modesty, he said.

The second FIR has been registered for carrying out comprehensive investigations into the complaints by adult complainants under relevant IPC sections pertaining to outraging of modesty, the officer said, adding that investigation into both the FIRs was being taken up in right earnest.

The First Information Reports (FIRs) were filed hours after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for Delhi Police, told a Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha that a case will be registered on Friday.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the wrestlers, placed or record an affidavit in a sealed cover which voiced apprehension about the safety of a minor girl, an alleged victim of sexual assault.

“Bearing in mind the content which has been placed on record, we direct the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, to make an assessment of the threat perception and provide adequate security to the minor girl involved,” the bench said in its order.

It said an affidavit be filed before it on or before May 5, the next date of hearing, about the steps taken for the security of the minor girl.

The apex court bench is hearing a plea filed by seven women wrestlers on non-registration of an FIR on their sexual harassment allegations against Singh.

After Mehta’s submission, the country’s top wrestlers, who have been on a sit-in at Jantar Mantar in Delhi since Sunday demanding action against Singh, rejoiced “the first step towards victory” but said they will continue their agitation. They demanded that the BJP MP be removed from all the positions he holds.

  • Karnataka: BJP govt dropped 182 hate crime FIRs between July 2019- April 2023

Karnataka: BJP govt dropped 182 hate crime FIRs between July 2019- April 2023

    [ad_1]

The BJP government in Karnataka issued seven separate orders to drop the prosecution in 385 criminal cases, including 182 cases of hate speech, cow vigilantism, and communal violence, over a four-year period from July 2019 to April 2023, the state home department stated as a response to an RTI filed by the Indian Express.

Over 1,000 people benefited from the dismissal of communal crime charges, including a BJP MP and MLA. In the overall withdrawal procedure, 2000 accused were granted relief.

The majority of the 182 cases with communal links withdrawn pertained to the Congress government’s tenure between 2013 and 2018.

Between 2013 and 2018, the Congress government in Karnataka, led by then chief minister Siddaramaiah, ordered the dismissal of 176 cases involving nearly 1,600 activists from the Socialist Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and the now-banned Popular Front of India (PFI), the majority of which were related to violations of prohibitory orders.

45 of the 182 charges dismissed by the BJP government had to do with suspected rightwing activist violence in the Uttara Kannada area in December 2017, following the murder of a Hindu youngster, Paresh Mesta.

The CBI eventually determined that it was an accident. Courts largely followed the government’s direction to withdraw cases.

A civil judge and magistrate in Sirsi, Uttara Kannada, disregarded a government decision on February 28, 2023, to dismiss prosecution against 66 persons in the communal violence after Mesta’s case, and committed the matter for trial, according to the Indian Express report.

The BJP and Congress party workers clashed at Kodekal in Hunasagi taluk on Thursday. Stone pelting was reported and more than 10 cars were damaged in the incident. The violence broke out when Raja Krishnappa Nayaka and Shanta Gouda Channapattana, who joined the Congress from BJP, were taking a procession.

At the time the procession passed through Kodekal village, where religious fare was happening, an argument broke out regarding making way for the vehicles. The argument led to an altercation and turned violent in no time.

Hundreds of workers of the Congress party staged a protest before the police station on Friday demanding the arrest of all accused persons. They alleged that the BJP workers had assaulted and pelted stones on them during campaigning.
