Overwhelmed by the response, Joint Director Tourism, Jammu, Sunaina Mehta said,” We wanted to encash the beauty of snow-filled meadows here to attract national travellers as well as foreigners.”

“The joint holistic approach by the district administration, the army and the tourism department resulted in resounding success,” she said.

Mehta suggested other districts to follow the Bhaderwah model of tourism and said “the festival in Bhaderwah has the potential to develop tourism in the Jammu region”.

Locals engaged in tourism, who had suffered due to the Covid pandemic, were hoped that the festival would finally turn out to be a catalyst to attract tourists round-the-year and revive area’s economy.

“Earlier, we had just a two-month tourism season as Bhaderwah used to be a summer destination only. This festival advanced the tourism season and we are getting advance bookings beside a lot of queries, indicating that we have to get ready for round-the-year tourism,” Shabir Ahmed Zargar, a hotelier in Bhaderwah, said.

  • Zelenskyy ‘born for this moment,’ Sean Penn says at film festival

Zelenskyy ‘born for this moment,’ Sean Penn says at film festival

    [ad_1]

“It’s hard to explain, but there was a resolve in reaction to something that no one has ever faced before,” Penn said.

At a press conference also Saturday, Penn said they returned to the hotel after the interview and the shelling started that very night. When they first met Zelenskyy, he had “a proper suit and a proper office.”

“The next time we saw him, he was in camos and his country was at war,” Penn said.

The outbreak of war sent the documentary on an unexpected track. The film contains further interviews with the president conducted over the past year.

After completing the project, the pair have continued to speak off camera. Zelenskyy presented the Hollywood star — who has been involved in numerous international humanitarian and anti-war efforts over the years — with the Ukrainian Order of Merit last year. Penn was also given a plaque on a Kyiv walkway honoring world leaders who have shown solidarity with Ukraine.

Penn told the AP that people would be most surprised by Zelenskyy’s “command of the mechanisms of government.”

“Not only his, but all of those upon whom he is reliant, his sense of mapping the diplomatic territory,” he said. “He’s on fire. He has that extreme gift for politics.”

Penn at the Berlinale’s opening ceremony on Thursday (AP Photo/Markus Schreiber)

Penn recalled the “civility” he saw when leaving Ukraine via the Polish border a few days after the invasion began.

“No one was honking. No one was trying to drive around the other and take and there was a kind of quiet acceptance,” Penn said during the interview. “You know, and these were families being torn apart. Some, most remain torn apart.”

During a later visit to Ukraine, Penn loaned one of his two Oscars to Zelenskyy, telling him: “When you win, bring it back to Malibu.”

“The Oscar is there in his office and it’s ready to be melted anytime he wants to melt it,” Penn clarified in the press conference after threatening to smelt his awards in public if Zelenskyy was not on the program for last year’s Oscar telecast.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did not include a video address from the president, opting instead for a moment of silence in support of the people of Ukraine. Zelenskyy did address the opening of the Berlinale on Thursday, exhorting artists and filmmakers to express support for Ukraine.

Penn said at the press conference that the gift of the Oscar was inspired by his “continuing shame towards the leadership of the Academy, the motion picture academy, in choosing to present Will Smith smacking Chris Rock rather than the greatest symbol of cinema and humanity living today on their broadcast.”

Penn’s two Oscars both were for best actor, in 2003 for “Mystic River” and in 2008 for “Milk.”

While it is not unusual for entertainment personalities to get behind a cause, “Superpower” sees Penn travel all the way to the front line of the war to talk to soldiers in the trenches. When it comes to his drive and determination, the star couldn’t tell you where that comes from.

“I could make up a number of answers” he joked to the AP. “It’s something I just don’t really ultimately think about, though I’ve been asked many times. … I don’t have the words for it.”

G20 International Food Festival in Delhi draws hundreds

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Aromas of golden jalebis dipped in sugar syrup, tikkis frying in oil and kung pao chicken being tossed in a wok waft through Talkatora Stadium here, drawing food lovers to their favourite cuisines at the G20 International Food Festival.

“This is where the scent of chhole bhature is coming from,” 13-year-old Himanshu tells his mother after meticulously searching the venue for his favourite dish.

The two-day G20 International Food Festival, themed “Taste the World”, was inaugurated by Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri at 11:30 am on Saturday.

Four G20 countries — China, Turkey, Japan and Mexico — are participating in the festival.

Also on offer are cuisines from 14 Indian states and union territories — Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Delhi, Bihar, Punjab, Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Manipur and Meghalaya.

More than 11 hotels, including Taj Palace, Taj Mahal, The Connaught, Taj Ambassadors, Le Meridian, ITC Maurya and The Park, are offering their signature food items.

A large crowd was seen at the Tihar jail bakery stall where a range of products from biscuits to savoury snacks and jalebis kept the visitors coming.

“All these products are prepared by prisoners of Tihar jail and that is why there is so much excitement among the people. People are coming back for jalebis again and again,” said Ashutosh, one of the workers at the stall.

For 45-year-old Vikram, the food festival gave him a chance to try the food from Hotel Taj Palace.

“This is the first time I am having food from Hotel Taj Palace. It is a little more expensive than other stalls but it is a good experience,” he said.

At the Japanese stall, teriyaki chicken was the speciality of the day.

“It is fried chicken which is served with special sauces. Sushi with teriyaki chicken filling is also on the menu. Another dish being served today is dashimaki tamago (Japanese rolled omelette),” said Amrit, the stall manager.

A chef is busy rustling up authentic Chinese delicacies at a stall set up by a Saket-based restaurant owned by an Indian man and his Chinese wife.

“My wife is Chinese and I am Indian. We were approached by the Chinese embassy and our chef is also Chinese. We are offering our specialities here like kung pao chicken and fried long beans,” said Abhishek, the restaurant owner.

The Ministry of Agriculture has also set up stalls at the festival on the theme of ‘International Year of Millets’.

Several small businesses that set up stalls at the festival were elated with the good response to their millet products.

“We started this company two years back but suddenly our business is picking up. It is because of the promotion of millets by PM Modi. People are learning about the benefits of millets and this is helping us,” said Manisha Srivastava, whose company sells snacks made from different kinds of millets.

Hundreds of people were seen relishing their favourite delicacies at the food festival.

The public has responded well and helped make this food festival a success, said an official of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), which has organised the event.
