    by Muskan Fatima

SRINAGAR: Government Arts Emporium Srinagar hosted an exhibition of artwork produced by engineers Iftikhar Wani and Shazia Basharat. Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri inaugurated the two-day painting exhibition.

Shazia Basharat, an engineer by profession, discovered her love for art during the lockdown period. This being her first exhibition, she looks forward to the journey ahead. ‘Art has changed my outlook on life and brought immense peace to me. Just like in art, sometimes in life things do not turn out exactly how we had imagined but just some touches can make it look better. I learnt from painting that there is always time to change, just that it should come from within you,’ said Shazia. Some of her paintings explored the beauty of nature, including ‘Aatish-e-Chinar,’ which depicts the beauty of the Autumn season, and ‘Beginnings,’ which depicts the beauty of the early bloom of almond flowers in Spring.

Although there is a diversity in her artworks, two of Shazia’s paintings showcased Sufi whirling dervishes. “In my understanding, these artists who whirl around at some point find that everything is blur around them, and when these worldly things become a blur for them, that is when they connect to God. They even try to dance on their toes as if disconnected from the worldly affairs,” said Shazia.

Iftekhar Ahmad Wani, on the other hand, is a self-taught artist who worked as a marketing manager and industrial marketing expert in Saudi Arabia. He started painting in 2012 and feels that art comes naturally to him. He mainly uses Kashmir as his inspiration for his paintings. One of his paintings shows the mesmerizing beauty of Khanqah-e-Moula. ‘My father was an engineer by profession, and he used to take me to Khanqah as a kid. After he passed away, I started painting those places. It is challenging to paint Shehr e Khas, but there is a poetic atmosphere to Kashmir” said Iftekhar.

Dr Jahangeer Aslam Makhdoomi, who is an Oncologist and an Artist, said, ‘I am happy to see that people are coming with their work. I hope this creates a chain reaction and encourages others as well, especially the youth. The paintings of Iftekhar Wani took me back to my native place, Downtown, and refreshed my memories.’

One of the onlookers named Unis Saleem commented, ‘Each painting seems to be telling a story. For a person like me who always dwells in paintings, visiting this exhibition has been a piece of solace as well as a thought-provoking experience.’

Another onlooker, Rukhsaar Manzoor, said, ‘These paintings bring out a feeling of home in me. For all of us, Kashmir is home.”

Arts Exhibition Held At Kashmir Arts Emporium

SRINAGAR: The Kashmir Arts Emporium, located near the Abdullah Bridge in Srinagar, hosted an enthralling art exhibition on April 14, 2023, featuring the exquisite artworks of Dr Jahangeer Aslam Makhdoomi. Though a Doctor by profession, Dr Jahangeer’s passion for art dates back to his childhood and continues to thrive to this day.

Dr Jahangeer’s artistic inclinations lean towards realism rather than abstract art, and his artworks are a reflection of his love for nature. The beauty of nature is a constant source of inspiration for him, and he translates this into his paintings.

His profound observations and unique artistic style are a testament to his devotion to the arts. His paintings are a feast for the eyes, conveying a message of beauty, hope, and wonder.

At the exhibition, Dr Jahangeer showcased one of his artworks called “Still Life,” which portrays a simple moment where tea and biscuits are arranged on a table. He captures the beauty in the simplicity of the moment and believes that moments like these are often overlooked in our daily lives. However, when painted on canvas, the stillness of the moment is magnified, and its significance becomes more apparent.

Another painting, “The Shop Next Door,” depicts an old shop that brings back a wave of nostalgia, a memory that resonates with almost every Kashmiri child. Dr Jahangeer’s artwork beautifully captures the essence of the memory and evokes a sense of longing.

Speaking about his artistic techniques, Jahangeer revealed that he draws inspiration from Renaissance painters. His preference for realism over abstract art is apparent in his artworks that showcase the beauty of nature.

Dr Jahangeer believes in the importance of time management and limits his social media intake to balance his work as a doctor with his love for art. Typically, it takes him several weeks to a month to create a single painting, but the process brings him immense peace and contentment.

Srinagar: Amid ongoing holy month of Ramadan, the Sri Pratap Singh (SPS) Museum has organized a week-long special exhibition featuring Quranic manuscripts. The exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to delve into the rich history and heritage of Islamic art and calligraphy.

The exhibition showcases a collection of rare and ancient Quranic manuscripts, including those from the 17th century – which is a testament to the deep reverence and importance that the Holy Quran holds in the Muslim faith.

SPS Museum manager Rabiya Qureshi said, “Our manuscript section was not displayed yet, but then we thought that this being the holy month of Ramadan, people should know that Kashmir had hand-written manuscripts of ancient times so that they will learn about the influence of art and artifacts from Central Asia and Persia, among others.”

“I am feeling proud that we have a collection of maximum manuscripts from the 17th century and in which Kashmiri paper is used. This is a local paper manufactured in the downtown area of Srinagar and although the processing and pounding were done in Ganderbal, after finishing it was written by,” she said.

“These manuscripts are mostly made of black ink, gold, and saffron color. This manuscript paper had two to three types and one of them was for royalty and another for common people,” she said, adding that people from outside take paper from here and use it. The first unit of paper was made in Kashmir, and India has also received paper from Kashmir.

Local students who visited the exhibition also shared their views. “It’s fascinating to see these ancient manuscripts, which have been so well-preserved. We’ve learned a lot about our local history and the art of manuscript-making,” said Farhan Ahmad.

Another student, Aisha Mir, said, “I never realized that Kashmir had such a rich tradition of manuscript-making. It is wonderful to see these beautiful pieces up close and to learn about their history and significance.”

Notably, most of the manuscripts in the museum are illuminated and mostly made of gold. It is also seen that saffron has been used in these manuscripts. These manuscripts have been made of natural and mineral colors and they took a long time to get ready. (GNS)
