Jeddah: Under Operation Kaveri, the 10th flight carrying Indian nationals left Jeddah as fighting continues in conflict-ridden Sudan, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Tuesday.

The flight has 231 passengers onboard and is en route to Ahmedabad.
Taking to Twitter, the Ministry of External Affairs official spokesperson Arindam Bagchi wrote, “#OperationKaveri 10th outbound flight carrying Indian evacuees from Jeddah. 231 passengers are en route to Ahmedabad.”

Earlier on Monday, a total of 186 Indians from strife-torn Sudan arrived in Kochi under Operation Kaveri on the 9th outbound flight.

“#OperationKaveri continues to bring Indians back home. The flight carrying 186 passengers touches down in Kochi,” Bagchi tweeted on Monday.
The Kochi-bound flight on Sunday departed from Jeddah with 186 passengers.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Monday tweeted: “With almost 1400 Indians evacuated in IAF aircraft over the past few days, two C-130 J aircraft have evacuated 260 personnel including elders who were above 90 years of age & one above 102 years of age.”
Fighting is underway in Khartoum as the UN warns that Sudan is at a humanitarian “breaking point”.

Rival military forces accuse each other of new violations of a ceasefire that they had just agreed to extend as their devastating conflict enters a third week.

The United Nations humanitarian coordinator in Sudan has warned that the humanitarian crisis in the country is turning into a “full flown catastrophe” and that the risk of spillover into neighbouring countries was worrisome.

“It has been more than two weeks of devastating fighting in Sudan, a conflict that is turning Sudan’s humanitarian crisis into a full-blown catastrophe,” Abdou Dieng, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in the country, told a briefing of member states via video link.

Earlier, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Sunday said that nearly 2300 evacuee Indians have reached the country.
“A C-130 Indian Airforce flight has landed in New Delhi with 40 passengers. With this flight, around 2,300 people have reached India,” EAM Jaishankar tweeted.

Sudan is experiencing bloodshed as a result of clashes between the army and paramilitary forces.
Fighting has erupted between soldiers loyal to Sudanese army leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his deputy, paramilitary Rapid Support Soldiers (RSF) commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

Committed to ensuring that no Indian national is left behind in Sudan, India has deployed its military planes and warships in the war-torn country to bring its citizens safely under Operation Kaveri.

Mumbai: Despite limited staff, the Indian embassy in Sudan operated round-the-clock to evacuate those stranded in the war-torn country, said some of the people who arrived in Mumbai from the African nation under ‘Operation Kaveri’ mission.

These passengers, who landed in Mumbai on Thursday, narrated their harrowing experiences of the last seven days.
Abdul Kadir, a 39-year-old businessman, said after the situation in Khartoum worsened, India’s ambassador B S Mubarak and his team of eight officials worked tirelessly.

“With limited staff, they did unlimited work,” he said, adding that the Indian embassy was operating 24×7 during this period.
Mubarak himself was stuck in the worst-affected part of the city, but he was continuously in touch with the staff and volunteers, he said.

The ambassador created WhatsApp groups of Indians in each locality and ensured that every person got help, Kadir added.
Defence attache Gurpreet Singh took risk and brought Mubarak to a safe area, he said.

Kadir, who was living in Sudan since 2017, said they were used to the tense situation in the country, but this time things took a bad turn unexpectedly, though they were hoping that tensions would decrease in the holy month of Ramadan.

“Within one hour, the situation went out of control,” he said, adding that they did not get a chance even to buy food and groceries.
“We got the benefit of being Indians. We were allowed to pass peacefully through numerous checkpoints,” Kadir said, adding that the Indian community at Port Sudan not only opened their homes but also their hearts for the rescued compatriots.

Another passenger said the situation was very bad, and the work done by the embassy staff could not be described in words.
“I only pray to Allah that all our stranded brothers and those in the embassy reach home safely,” he added.

Many people were still waiting for their relatives to reach Mumbai from Sudan. Anita Pandey, a resident of Kalyan, was one of them.

Her husband had been working as a fitter in Khartoum for the last one year.
“My husband’s friend told me that he has been rescued and is safe. I don’t know where he is at present, but we are waiting for his arrival….,” Pandey said.

INS Teg is the fourth Talwar-class frigate constructed for the Indian Navy.

Sudan is experiencing bloodshed as a result of clashes between the army and paramilitary forces. Even though there is a 72-hour ceasefire, there have been allegations of violence.

Fighting has erupted between soldiers loyal to Sudanese army leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his deputy, paramilitary Rapid Support Soldiers (RSF) commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

‘We were not sleeping, eating or drinking’: Sudan evacuees tell of dangerous journeys

    [ad_1]

Evacuees from the fighting in Sudan have described a harrowing escape from the violence-wracked capital, across the Red Sea to Saudi Arabia.

Wheelchair-bound elderly women and babies asleep in their parents’ arms were among the nearly 200 people from more than 20 countries who disembarked from a naval frigate in the coastal city of Jeddah on Monday night after a daring journey to safety.

“We travelled a long way from Khartoum to Port Sudan. It took us around 10 or 11 hours,” said Lebanese national Suhaib Aicha, who has operated a plastics factory in Sudan for more than a decade.

“It took us another 20 hours on this ship from Port Sudan to Jeddah,” he told the AFP news agency as his young daughter cried on his shoulders.

“We were not sleeping, eating or drinking. We lived through many difficult days,” said another Lebanese passenger who declined to give her name.

Fighting broke out in Sudan on 15 April between forces loyal to army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his deputy turned rival Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, known as Hemedti, who commands the powerful paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

At least 427 people have been killed and more than 3,700 wounded, according to UN agencies, and many are now grappling with acute shortages of water, food, medicines and fuel as well as power and internet blackouts.

Late Monday, US secretary of state Antony Blinken announced Burhan and Hemedti had agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire.

Those who reached Saudi soil on Monday said they were grateful to be out of a country where the doctors’ union has reported that “morgues are full” and “corpses litter the streets”.

Saudi Arabia has so far welcomed 150 people including foreign diplomats and officials in Jeddah. In total, 356 people have been evacuated to the kingdom from Sudan so far – 101 Saudis and 255 foreigners from more than 20 countries, the official Saudi Press Agency reported.

A US special forces operation at the weekend triggered the rush by many other western countries to get their diplomatic staff out. They rescued dozens of people from Khartoum, spending less than an hour on the ground.

France sent two planes to Khartoum, evacuating nearly 400 people, including French nationals as well as citizens of other countries, while Germany’s air force has flown out 311 people so far on three planes from an airfield near Khartoum.

The British military is assessing how to rescue some of the thousands of British nationals still stranded in Sudan after facing criticism for missing a window of opportunity to evacuate more than just British diplomats and their families.

Saudi officials are coming under pressure to do more than facilitate evacuations, given their close ties to the two generals whose troops are fighting it out in and beyond Khartoum.

“Saudi Arabia is a critical player in the ceasefire diplomacy in Sudan,” Alan Boswell of the International Crisis Group told AFP.

“African and western governments are looking to Riyadh for help in convincing Sudan’s military to give talks a chance.”
