Biopsy found Biden’s skin lesion was a common skin cancer, White House doctor says

The White House on Friday confirmed President Joe Biden’s skin lesion that was removed during his physical last month was basal cell carcinoma — a very common and treatable skin cancer. All cancerous tissue was removed and no further treatment is required, his doctor said.

In a memo on Friday, the president’s doctor noted that basal cell lesions “do not tend to ‘spread’ or metastasize,” as other serious skin cancers do. During Biden’s physical last month, the area of the skin on his chest was removed via electrodesiccation and curettage, a common skin cancer treatment that involves scraping and removing the skin with a sharp instrument and a high-frequency electric current. The doctor sent the lesion for a biopsy on Feb. 16.

“The site of the biopsy has healed nicely and the President will continue dermatologic surveillance as part of his ongoing comprehensive health care,” Kevin O’Connor, the president’s physician, wrote Friday.

  • FIR Against MC Chairman Pulwama for ‘Misbehaving’ With Doctor

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: A case has been registered against Municipal Councillor Chairman Pulwama over his alleged misbehaviour with a doctor at District Hospital Pulwama earlier this week.

A doctor at District Hospital Pulwama said that the police registered a First Investigation Report (FIR) against Municipal Council Chairman Bilal Ahmad Rather over ‘misbehaving’ with a doctor at District Hospital (Pulwama) on February 27, during evening hours.

“On February 27, 2023 at around 6.30 pm, a man namely Bilal Ahmad Rather, who is chairman of Municipal Council, barged in the duty room of a doctor who was on duty in the emergency department of the hospital. As soon as the person entered the hospital, the person started shouting and barged into the duty room of a doctor. He made a huge hue and cry and misbehaved with the doctor”, the doctor reading out the FIR copy said.

“There were many sick patients in the hospital at the time when the person made his entry into the hospital and the person shouted & hurled abuse at the doctor and was in a very aggressive mood. He was about to assault the doctor and wouldn’t have managed to stay away from this person. Meanwhile he obstructed the doctor who was discharging his duties towards his patients and made ruckus in the casualty department and was asking for a lock and key to lock the hospital, as seen in the video footage which created disruption in the patient care and could have caused death or serious complications to the critical patients admitted in the hospital”, the doctor added.

The doctor said, the police were requested to take cognizance of this episode in light of the video footage which has gone viral on social media, so that such ugly incidents don’t happen which will affect the safety of doctors besides working in hospitals and patient care.

Taking cognizance of the incident, the police accordingly registered an FIR under sections 353/506 IPC in police station Pulwama against the accused”, the doctor further said. (GNS)

  • DAK condemns Pulwama Councilor’s Alleged Misbehavior with Doctor

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, Mar 1 (GNS): Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Wednesday condemned in strongest words the ‘misbehaviour of Pulwama councilor with a doctor’.

The councilor is alleged to have used demeaning, abusive and unparliamentary language with the doctor while he was discharging his duties.

“Such behavior is simply unacceptable,” said DAK President Dr Nisar-ul-Hassan in a statement issued to GNS.

Dr Hassan said on Monday evening, the councilor entered into district hospital Pulwama and threatened and abused the doctor on duty which resulted in disruption of medical services.

“Such acts of intimidation against medical staff that provide help to sick and wounded is shocking,” he said.

The DAK President said medical personnel put in their blood and sweat to save lives in extremely difficult conditions and instead of appreciation get abuses.

“The act of hooliganism from a public representative has generated fear and anxiety among health care workers,” he said.

Dr Nisar said under such circumstances doctors cannot deliver their services efficiently which adversely affects patient care.

“It is difficult for doctors to work under such hostile conditions,” he said adding “such atrocious attitude towards doctors has forced many to migrate and this is the main reason for brain drain.”

General Secretary DAK Dr Arshad Ali said such maltreatment with a doctor on duty will not only set a bad precedent but will also demoralize the medical staff who are discharging their duties in toughest circumstances.

“There has to be an end to this mad pattern of atrocities against medical staff which has become a routine,” he added. (GNS)

  • Doctor ‘Manhandled’, DC Orders Probe

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: After a video of a Councillor allegedly misbehaving with a doctor on duty at the District Hospital (DH) Pulwama, went viral, the authorities in the district ordered an inquiry into the matter.

Deputy Commissioner, Pulwama has tasked the ADC concerned to probe the matter and submit the report within 2 days, and initiate the action as per rules.

Councillor, Municipal Council, Pulwama Bilal Rather, accused of misbehaving with the doctor on duty in Pulwama, was seen screaming at a doctor , and later allegedly hurling choicest abuses at him. All this was recorded in a video that was posted on various social media platforms garnering thousands of views.

After the incident, the doctors of the DH Pulwama including the paramedical staff have written to the concerned Medical Superintendent, seeking immediate action.

The medical staff has stated that on 27-02-2023, around 06:15 pm while their colleague was busy with his duty in casualty, “few miscreants barged into the room and started asking in a rude manner about the non-availability of USG facility in the hospital after 4.30 pm and why the patient has been asked to undergo USG outside.”

“Miscreants obstructed the patient care which could have caused death or a serious complication to critical patients admitted in the casualty,” they added.

They said that the doctor accompanied the “mob” to the triage room where they hurled abuses at him and tried to manhandle him. “He tried to make them understand about the non-availability of USG facility after 4.30 pm that day as the concerned Sinologist’s son was admitted to ICU, but still they were not in a mood to listen.”

The staff said that in case he would have retaliated, he would have been lynched.

Medical staff has requested the concerned authorities to take stringent and exemplary action against the accused Councillor for his condemnable act.

The Medical Superintendent of DH Pulwama, has, in the meantime, lodged an FIR against the identified MC Pulwama Councillor.

Meanwhile, the J&K Doctors Coordination Committee (JKDCC) has also written to the Deputy Commissioner, Pulwama about the matter and has sought immediate action against the accused person.

  • Azra Raza: A doctor who is poet at heart

Azra Raza: A doctor who is poet at heart

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Her prefix is doctor. But it could well have been an author. Faced with a career choice, she picked up the stethoscope. But later she plunged for the pen as well. And now she wields both of them with equal ease. So much so that sometimes it becomes difficult to tell the doctor from the writer.

That’s Dr. Azra Raza for you. An oncologist by profession and a writer by passion. This Pakistan-born Professor of Medicine is making waves as a cancer expert and also as an author of no mean repute. While her research on myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukaemia showed that low blood counts were not a result of bone marrow failure but the effect of a hyper-proliferative state in the marrow tissue, her books have received critical acclaim and brought out the sensitive writer in her. Dr. Raza expresses her passion best by quoting Hamlet:

This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man

It might sound unusual for a health professional to be so passionate about poetry. But Dr. Raza thinks otherwise. For her poetry and science are the two sides of the same coin since both require creativity to unravel the mystery. “Knowing about human genomics is pure poetry. Both poetry and science go for the grand themes of life,” she once remarked.

Right from her childhood Dr. Raza was attracted to both science and literature. Her obsession with ants led her to read all about biology and pathology of myeloid malignancies. “If I had grown up in the West, I am confident that I would be a scientist and not physician,” she told an interviewer many years later. In pursuit of her dream she landed up in the US soon after graduating from the Dow Medical College, Karachi. She started working at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York. A bright student, she became a full-fledged professor at the Rush University in Chicago when she was just 39. Later she was named the first Director of the Division of Haematology and Oncology at the University of Massachusetts.

As her career looked up, Dr. Raza dedicated herself to grander themes. She focused all her expertise in finding the cause and cure of cancer. All through her research it was humanism that was the guiding principle of her philosophy. She realised that human conduct is governed by a series of incidents where one act is the result of another. She started harnessing all her knowledge and desires for the service of humanity. Her practice and ultimate goals underwent subtle changes. “Each individual patient acquired a special place in my life and caring for their physical and emotional needs became my prime concern,” says Dr. Raza who lost her husband, Harvey Preisler, to cancer. Interestingly, both of them had worked hard to find a cure for the disease.

In an interview given to Scott Douglas Jacobsen of In-Sight, she reveals many facets of her life. Her exemplary work in cancer research helped her bag many awards including the prestigious Hope Award for Cancer Research. After the death of her husband, she became a voracious reader. She gobbled up the 100 Great Books of the Western Literary Tradition right from Euripides and Aeschylus to Rushdie and Morrison. Poetry also proved a great motivator for her. She loves to read Shakespeare, Dante, Milton and quotes Ghalib at the drop of a hat. Her perfect recital of long ghazals by rote leaves one speechless.

While contributing to numerous medical journals, Dr Raza has made a mark as a creative writer. She has written a total of six books. Her book, The First Cell, makes an interesting read. It explores cancer from every angle – medical, scientific, cultural and personal. She has also come up with an interesting book on Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib, one of the greatest of Urdu poets. In her book, A Tribute to Ghalib, Dr. Raza reinterprets 21 ghazals of the maestro along with co-author, Sara Suleri Goodyear. The book tries to illustrate the great range of the poet’s work.

Dr. Raza continues her dalliance with medicine and literature. Despite her awesome credentials she persists with hard since she believes success is not something to be achieved but must be won continuously. As Mark Twain remarked, continuous improvement is better than delayed perfection.

Indian-American doctor admits healthcare fraud conspiracy

    [ad_1]

New York: An Indian-American doctor has admitted defrauding New Jersey state and local health benefit programmes and other insurers by submitting fraudulent claims for medically unnecessary prescriptions.

Saurabh Patel, 51, who owns a medical clinic in Newark, pleaded guilty by videoconference before the US District Judge Robert B. Kugler last week to a superseding information charging him with one count of conspiring to commit healthcare fraud.

Saurabh of Woodbridge, New Jersey, was previously charged by indictment with conspiring in the healthcare fraud scheme with a family member, Kaival Patel.

According to court documents, despite having no background in pharmaceuticals or medicine, Kaival and his wife created and operated a company called ABC Healthy Living LLC to market medical products and services, including compound prescription medications.

Kaival and an accomplice then approached Saurabh and convinced him to authorise prescriptions for the compound medications for which they received commissions, regardless of whether or not those prescriptions were medically necessary.

The conspirators steered individuals who were paid to receive the compound medications to Saurabh’s medical practice for the purpose of receiving his authorisation on the fraudulent prescriptions, a Department of Justice said in a statement.

This enabled Saurabh to receive insurance payments for those patient visits and procedures. In addition to the people steered to Saurabh’s medical practice as part of the scheme, Kaival also instructed Saurabh on which insurance companies covered the compound medications.

Thereafter, he requested that Saurabh prescribe those medications to existing patients of his practice with those insurance plans in order to further benefit Kaival and his wife.

Kaival was charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering, substantive counts of money laundering, and making false statements to federal agents.

He is scheduled to proceed to trial later this year.

Saurabh faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. His sentencing is scheduled for June 27, 2023.

  • Biden is ‘healthy’ and ‘vigorous,’ White House doctor says

Biden is ‘healthy’ and ‘vigorous,’ White House doctor says

    [ad_1]

    biden 50218

Since his last physical, Biden battled a case of Covid and a rebound infection but O’Connor said the president has not experienced any prolonged symptoms that would be considered long Covid.

Biden’s health has remained stable since his last medical exam was released in November 2021. In that report, the doctor noted the president had a “perceptibly stiffer and less fluid” gait and more frequent throat clearing, two addendums that could be explained by relatively minor issues.

Biden did have a small lesion removed from his chest on Thursday and sent for biopsy, the doctor’s summary said. First lady Jill Biden had cancerous tissue removed last month.

The president also underwent an “extremely detailed neurologic exam,” but resulted in no findings that would be consistent with a stroke, multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease. An exam of Biden’s head, ears, eyes, nose and throat were also normal.

As was the case in 2021, Thursday’s summary noted Biden was being treated for several common age-related conditions such as a minor heart arrhythmia and an elevated cholesterol level. O’Connor said Thursday that the president’s cholesterol remains “remarkably low” on his current medication.

For the president’s “mild sensory peripheral neuropathy of the feet,” which was also noted in the 2021 report, the doctor on Thursday prescribed Biden custom orthotics.

The president weighed in at 178 pounds — down six pounds from his last physical — and stands 6 feet tall. He still works out five days a week, the doctor said, and does not drink alcohol or use tobacco products.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended Biden’s health earlier Thursday when pressed on the president’s age during the press briefing.

“If you watch him, you’ll see that he has a grueling schedule that he keeps up with — that sometimes some of us are not able to keep up with,” she said.

She noted that at last week’s State of the Union, “I believe he spent 90 minutes speaking to congressional members in front of him to the American people. After that, he spent an hour shaking hands and saying hello and greeting congressional members and their guests.
