Group Captain Dismissed For Attack On Own Copter, Day After Balakot Strike

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Group Captain Suman Roy Chowdhury, then Chief Operations Officer of Srinagar Air Force Station, has been dismissed by a General Court Martial (GCM) in Delhi for a missile attack on a friendly Mi-17 helicopter on February 27, 2019. The attack resulted in the death of six Air Force personnel and a civilian. The incident took place a day after the Indian Air Force carried out an airstrike in Balakot, Pakistan, reported The Tribune.

As per The Tribune, The GCM held Group Captain Chowdhury guilty on five of the nine charges. He was held guilty of not obeying the general order issued by Air Headquarters, dated July 14, 2017, which required all aircraft operating north of latitude 3200 N to operate with Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) on. He permitted Mi-17 to get airborne from Srinagar without the IFF on. He was held guilty of assigning an inbound flying object to the missile unit at 10:10 am on February 27, 2019, at 23 km from the Srinagar base for engagement by the Mission Commander, Command and Control Unit of 2258 Squadron. As a consequence, the assigned flying target, which actually was friendly copter Mi-17, was shot down by a Spyder missile at 10:14 am. The mishap caused a loss of Rs 133.31 crore to the state.

The court-martial found Wing Commander Shyam Naithani, who was the Senior Air Traffic Control Officer at the time of the incident, not guilty on four charges and gave him a severe reprimand for one charge.

The findings of the GCM and the sentence were subject to confirmation by the IAF Chief, according to Air Force officials. The High Court had allowed the GCM to pronounce the findings against Group Captain Chowdhury but ordered that these must not be given effect till the disposal of the case before it. The High Court is yet to dispose of the case, The Tribune reported.

The missile attack on the friendly Mi-17 helicopter resulted in the death of Squadron Leaders S Vashisht and Ninand M, Sergeant VK Pandey, Sergeant Vikrant Sahrawat, Corporal Pankaj Kumar, Corporal D Pandey, and Kifayat Hussain Ganie, a civilian on the ground and resident of Budgam district.

Group Captain Chowdhury had urged the GCM not to proceed with the pronouncement of the sentence till the case was in the High Court. His counsel Captain Sandeep Bansal (retd) said they would challenge the decision before the High Court.

  • New Zealand: Stuart Nash dismissed from Cabinet

New Zealand: Stuart Nash dismissed from Cabinet

    [ad_1]

Auckland: This evening New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins has advised the Governor-General to dismiss Stuart Nash from all his ministerial portfolios.

Late this afternoon Chris Hipkins was made aware by a news outlet of an email Stuart Nash sent in March 2020 to two contacts regarding a commercial rent relief package that Cabinet had considered.

In the email, he sets out both his opposition to the decision Cabinet reached and the position that other Cabinet members took.

This is a clear breach of collective responsibility and Cabinet confidentiality.

Stuart Nash has fundamentally breached Chris Hipkins’ trust and the trust of his Cabinet colleagues and his conduct is inexcusable.

In addition, the two recipients of the email were donors; Troy Bowker and Greg Loveridge, via GRL Holdings Ltd, have both donated to Stuart Nash.

They are also commercial property owners who had an interest in the Cabinet decision.

That crosses a line that is totally unacceptable to Chris Hipkins.

Chris Hipkins expects Ministers to uphold the highest ethical standards and his actions raise perceptions of influence that cannot stand.

In recent weeks Chris Hipkins has sought and been given assurances from Stuart that there were no other instances or allegations of misconduct that he should be aware of.

While Stuart was on a final warning, Hipkins want to be clear that this incident would have resulted in his dismissal in its own right. Hipkins considers the matter to be a very serious one.

Minister Megan Woods will be the Acting Minister for Economic Development and Acting Minister of Forestry, and Minister David Parker will be Acting Minister for Oceans and Fisheries.

Meka Whaitiri will lead the Hawkes Bay Cyclone response on an acting basis.

  • Plea against upcoming movie ‘Adipurush’ dismissed as withdrawn

Plea against upcoming movie ‘Adipurush’ dismissed as withdrawn

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A Delhi court has “dismissed as withdrawn” a plea seeking an injunction against the upcoming movie “Adipurush”.

Additional Senior Civil Judge Abhishek Kumar heard the arguments on behalf of the plaintiff, advocate Raj Gaurav, on the maintainability of the civil suit seeking an injunction at the pre-summons stage.

“The matter is listed for remaining arguments on behalf of the plaintiff…. However, at this stage, the plaintiff has submitted that he may be allowed to withdraw the case as the release of the movie has been postponed and it has come to his knowledge that the filmmakers are planning to make certain alterations and changes in the movie,” the judge said in an order passed on Saturday.

“In view of the statement, the present suit is dismissed as withdrawn,” the judge added.

The petitioner claimed that the film, starring Kriti Sanon, Prabhas and Saif Ali Khan, hurts the sentiments of Hindus by unwarranted and inaccurate depiction of Lord Ram and Lord Hanuman in its promotional video, and sought an ad interim stay on the movie in its present form along with a permanent injunction.

  • Geologist’s Red Sea earthquake prediction dismissed as ‘personal opinions’

Geologist’s Red Sea earthquake prediction dismissed as ‘personal opinions’

    [ad_1]

Authorities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) have dismissed predictions about a potential quake in the Red Sea by a prominent Saudi geologist as ‘mere personal opinions’.

The warning comes after tens of thousands of people were killed in Turkey and neighboring Syria by the quake, which caused widespread destruction and sparked a large-scale international relief effort.

In an interview with Al Hadath TV on Friday, Abdul Aziz bin Laboun, a prominent geologist in the Kingdom, said, “This major tremor is expected and could happen at any minute. Seismic surveys show at least 1,000 tremors occur along the Red Sea. Consequently, we have to coexist with this situation, but precaution should be taken.”

“We should thoroughly read the geological history of the region. These are not incidental events. They are characteristic of the region,” Bin Laboun said without elaborating.

At the same time, the Saudi geological survey confirmed that the number of tremors that are monitored in the Red Sea does not exceed dozens per week, and they are not felt and do not constitute a danger.

The official spokesman for the Saudi geological survey, Tariq Aba Al-Khail, said in a statement reported by the Emirate of Makkah Al-Mukarramah on Saturday, “The Geological Hazards Center in the Saudi Geological Survey continuously monitors, around the clock, seismic activity in the central Red Sea region along the groove rift.”

“The seismic magnitude ranges from weak to moderate, as it is considered a tectonic tension zone as a result of the divergence of the African tectonic plate from the Arab tectonic plate, which is characterized by mostly weak to moderate seismic activity,” he added.

He indicated that “the timing and locations of earthquakes cannot be predicted,” and “everything that has been raised recently is just personal judgments that are not based on studies, follow-up, and monitoring, but rather mere predictions.”

He also explained that the Saudi Geological Survey is the concerned authority entrusted with seismic monitoring in the Kingdom, stressing the need to take the correct information from the official authorities with regard to seismic monitoring.

“Two education inspectors examined the CCTV footage of the Class. In the said footage, the voice is not clear. Even other students are not endorsing the girl student’s allegations against the teacher, but for the satisfaction of the student and her parents, Maths teacher Balmukund’s service has been terminated with immediate effect.”

School trustee Ashok Bhambhar, however, said, “The teacher had asked the Class 8 student to say ‘I love formula’, as she was not able to describe the formula. He had never asked the girl student to say ‘I love you’.”
