UK PM Rishi Sunak admits disappointing’ first electoral test outcome

    [ad_1]

London: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Friday admitted it was a “disappointing” run for the governing Conservative Party, with the Opposition Labour and Liberal Democrat parties making significant gains in the local elections.

Voters went to the polls on Thursday to elect local representatives in 230 of England’s 317 councils in what marked Sunak’s first electoral test at the ballot box since the British Indian leader took charge at 10 Downing Street in October 2022.

Even as the results continue to be counted, Labour gained control of some of its top target councils including Medway in south-east England which has been under Tory control for 20 years.

Pollsters had forecast that a loss of fewer than 1,000 seats for the governing Tories would be seen as a good result for Sunak, given that the government usually faces a drubbing in local polls close to a general election which is expected towards the second half of next year.

However, that threshold seems set to be crossed and will add immense pressure on the British Indian leader within his own party ranks.

“It is always disappointing to lose hardworking Conservative councillors,” said Sunak as the early results and trends poured in.

“I’m not detecting any massive groundswell of movement towards the Labour Party,” the 42-year-old prime minister stressed.

However, the Opposition parties have declared the results a big sign of things to come in the general election.

“Make no mistake, we are on course for a Labour majority at the next general election. We’ve won the trust and confidence of voters and now we can go on and change our country,” said Labour Leader Sir Keir Starmer.

Starmer travelled to Medway to celebrate his party’s victory in the Kent council with local activists.

“You didn’t just get it over the line, you blew the doors off,” he told the crowd.

He said Labour were “on course” to win a majority at the next general election.

Liberal Democrat Leader Sir Ed Davey, meanwhile, described the results as a “ground-breaking night” for his party.

“The Liberal Democrats are the big winners in this year’s local elections,” he declared.

While poll experts are striking a note of caution to say that local elections have never proven to be very reliable indicators for a general election, the mood music around Sunak having taken over a deeply divided party without the backing of the wider British electorate has only got louder.

“The clear message of the night is indeed that the Conservatives have done badly,” polling expert John Curtice told the BBC.

“The slightly more difficult thing for the Labour Party is that yes, it has hit some of its targets and it has made significant gains already, [but] it is having to share the spoils with other Opposition parties.

“And in particular, the one niggle the Labour Party will really have I think about these results if it continues is that yes, the swing in the local elections is almost what you would expect from the national polls but not quite,” he cautioned.

The complete election tally will be clear only by Friday night but the overall picture for large parts of England seems to be a move away from the Sunak-led Conservatives, largely seen as a reaction to the crippling cost-of-living crisis facing the country.

The Labour Party would have a nine-point lead over the Conservatives based on today’s results, if all of Britain voted, according to a BBC projection.

The term for Parliament is five years. As the current Parliament first met on December 17, 2019, it will be automatically dissolved on December 17, 2024. Thus, the next UK general election is not due until January 2025.

  • PM Modi’s Telangana visit was highly disappointing: Uttam

PM Modi’s Telangana visit was highly disappointing: Uttam

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Congress MP N. Uttam Kumar Reddy expressed his disappointment over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Telangana on Saturday, as the Prime Minister did not announce any significant projects for the state.

Uttam Kumar Reddy pointed out that most projects inaugurated by PM Modi had already been announced years ago and were significantly delayed. Instead of acknowledging these delays, Modi treated them as if they were new initiatives. For example, the AIIMS Bibinagar project, approved four years ago, has faced delays due to the negligence of Modi’s government. Rather than apologizing for the delay, PM Modi ceremoniously laid the foundation stone again without providing a completion deadline.

He highlighted that AIIMS Bibinagar was approved by the Union Cabinet on December 17, 2018, with Rs. 1,028 crores allocated for the project. Only Rs. 31.71 crore has been released so far. The project’s original completion deadline of September 2022 has been extended multiple times, most recently to January 2025. However, the Centre has remained silent on the current deadline.

The delay in constructing AIIMS Bibinagar has been raised numerous times between November 2019 and December 2021. Despite the Centre acknowledging the delays and providing updated deadlines, Uttam Kumar Reddy noted that only a small fraction of the allocated funds have been spent on the project.

Furthermore, Reddy stated that the BJP government has not taken steps to fill sanctioned positions within AIIMS Bibinagar, leaving many faculty and non-faculty posts vacant.

The Congress MP also accused the BJP government of deliberate discrimination against Telangana. While the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act mandated the establishment of an AIIMS in both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the Centre has released more than 50% of allocated funds for 14 out of 16 AIIMS across the country, but only a fraction of the funds for Telangana’s AIIMS.

“PM Modi recently pledged to spend Rs. 1,366 crores on AIIMS Bibinagar’s construction but did not provide an explanation for the project’s delays. Additionally, he did not address other unfulfilled promises such as the Railway Coach Factory at Qazipet, the Steel Plant at Bayyaram, and other assurances given to Telangana in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014,” he said.

BRS’s Kavitha describes PM Modi’s speech as disappointing, repetitive

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC K Kavitha described Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech addressed in Lok Sabha on Wednesday as disappointing and repetitive.

Speaking to reporters, she said that the speech has been heard almost 100 times in the Parliament.

“It was a very rhetorical speech that he has given 100 times. It had no mention of Adani, no mention of the money lost of middle-class people, common people,” she said.

Kavitha remarked that the national Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) copies schemes from Telangana.

“Rythu Bandhu is a vision and flagship scheme of the KCR government. Today when the PM spoke about PM Kisan Yojna, he openly lied about the figures of beneficiaries of the scheme. If you believe you can lie and still come back to power people will see the arrogance,” Kavitha said.

She spoke about Modi’s silence on the Adani expose by Hindenburg at the Parliament. “If PM Modi wants to conveniently give ornate speech to hide behind the national flag to protect his friend Adani then only time will decide the fate of this government.”

“Adani or Pradhani it’s all the same now, it’s entwined. Every single person knows that they are two sides of the same coin,” Kavitha added.

Kavitha further said that BRS has questions for PM Modi that should be answered..

“What is the current status of the State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, and the LIC? And has the government chalked out a plan to bail them?” she asked.

Lastly, she said that PM Modi acts like a ‘traffic police’ by diverting criticism towards Opposition parties.
