    Mehrauli demolitions: Delhi govt approves ‘immediate aid’ to families made homeless

    New Delhi: In the wake of the Delhi Development Authority’s recent demolition drive in south Delhi that rendered many homeless, the Delhi government on Thursday approved a proposal to provide ‘immediate aid and relief’ to affected families.

    Highlighting the severity of the situation, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has approved a proposal to provide affected families with tents, food, blankets, and other essential supplies. The file is now pending with LG V.K. Saxena for the approval.

    Delhi Revenue Minister Kailash Gahlot had sent a proposal to Chief Minister seeking to address the concerns of the affected families, who had lost their homes on Wednesday. In the proposal, he apprised the CM of the recent developments that had taken place in the matter so far.

    The DDA had initiated a large-scale demolition drive in the Ladha Sarai village under the pretext of a disputed demarcation of the Mehrauli Archaeological Park. The move left hundreds of persons without shelter or basic amenities.

    However, opposing the move by the DDA, the Delhi government intervened to stop the demolition and ordered a fresh demarcation of the disputed area through orders of Revenue Minister Gahlot.

    Meanwhile, LG Saxena on Tuesday directed the Delhi Development Authority to stall the ongoing demolition drive in these villages till further instructions.

    “The decision came after a delegation of residents of these villages met the LG and sought relief from the demolition drive while citing the anomalies in the demarcation of land in these areas, that was carried out by the AAP Government in 2021”, a statement from LG Secretariat had said.

    SRINAGAR: In view of the ongoing anti-encroachment drive Amnesty International India on Wednesday said that the demolitions in Kashmir must be halted and those affected should be compensated.

    “The ongoing demolitions appear to be an extension of the brutal human rights violations the region of Jammu and Kashmir, the only Muslim majority region of India, has historically witnessed. These demolitions could amount to forced evictions which constitute a gross violation of human rights,” Aakar Patel, chair of the board for Amnesty International India said.

    “Under the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, to which India is a state party, everyone has the right to adequate housing which includes a prohibition on forced evictions. Where justified, evictions should be carried out in accordance with general principles of reasonableness and proportionality and include safeguards of reasonable and adequate notice; provision of legal remedies for infringement of rights; and provision of legal aid to people who need it to seek redress from the courts. No one should be made homeless or vulnerable to other human rights violations because of evictions.”

    Aakar Patel said the government must “immediately halt the demolition drive” and “ensure that safeguards against forced evictions as outlined in international human rights standards are put in place before any evictions are carried out”. It added: “They must offer adequate compensation to all those affected without discrimination, ensure that victims of forced evictions have access to effective remedy, and those responsible are held to account.”

    SRINAGAR: Democratic Azad Party chief Ghulam Nabi Azad called upon Union Home Minister Amit Shah to apprise him of “land eviction issues” in Jammu and Kashmir.

    In a statement, DAP said Ghulam Nabi Azad met Amit Shah to apprise him of “serious unrest and uncertainty prevailing” among the public due to the “circular of eviction issued by the UT administration directing all Deputy Commissioners to remove the encroachments on state land, including Roshni and Kacharai.”

    Taking to social networking site Twitter, Azad said he met Amit Shah on Wednesday regarding the land eviction issues in Jammu and Kashmir.

    “Met union Home minister Amit Shah Ji regarding land eviction issues in J&K. Apprised him about the prevailing unrest & uncertainty among the common people who are forced to vacate the properties which are otherwise recognized by successive regimes. Amit Shah Ji assured me no small landholders who constructed houses will be touched!” said Azad, in a series of tweets.

    The DAP chairman said that he informed the Home Minister that the majority of the occupants who are holding small lands and have constructed houses over the past few decades are migrants and are mostly victims of militancy, “as well as victims of abnormal situations arising from time to time, being a border state.”

    The DAP statement further stated that Azad had taken up the same issue with LG Manoj Sinha, who also assured him to do the needful with a cogent land policy for small landholders.
