Difficult to engage with neighbour that practices cross-border terrorism: Jaishankar

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Without naming Pakistan, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said that it is difficult to engage with a neighbour which practices cross-border terrorism against India.

At the same time though, Jaishankar, who is currently in Panama as part of his four-nation tour of North and South America, expressed hope that one day a stage will arrive when Pakistan will deliver on its commitment to not sponsoring cross-border terrorism.

During a joint press briefing with his counterpart from Panama, the Minister said: “It is for us very difficult to engage with a neighbour who practices cross-border terrorism against us. We’ve always said that they have to deliver on the commitment to not sponsor and carry out cross-border terrorism.

“We continue to hope that one day we would reach that stage.”

As part of the visit, Jaishankar first visited Guyana, which was followed by Panama.

He is also scheduled to make stops in Colombia (April 25-27) and the Dominican Republic (April 27-29).

  • Amid cross-border tension, acting Afghan FM to visit Pakistan

Amid cross-border tension, acting Afghan FM to visit Pakistan

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Tension is growing between Pakistan and the interim Afghanistan government with Islamabad pointing fingers at Kabul for being the facilitator and supporter of militants from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), whose continued attacks in different parts of Pakistan have spread a wave of terror, posing serious security threat to the armed forces.

Against this backdrop, Amir Khan Muttaqi, Afghanistan’s acting Foreign Minister, is expected to visit Islamabad and hold talks with the senior officials of the Pakistan government and its security forces.

The visit holds critical and crucial relevance in view of the persisting tensions between the two countries, which share a large porous border.

As per sources in the know of things, Islamabad and Kabul are currently in touch with each other to finalise the date for the visit of the Afghan Taliban chief’s acting Foreign Minister.

“The visit is expected to take place in the coming weeks,” said a source.

This will be Mutaqqi’s second visit to Islamabad. He had previously come in November 2021, months after the Taliban took over the control in Afghanistan, ousting the Ashraf Ghani government, which fell in a span of 20 days after the withdrawal of NATO forces.

“Pakistan had hoped that the Taliban takeover would improve border security and more importantly, the issue of terrorist sanctuaries would be sorted out. But contrary to our expectations, the TTP-sponsored attacks have only increased, causing friction in bilateral ties,” said the source.

This happened after months long peace talks between the former Pakistan government of Imran Khan, the security agencies of the country and the TTP, which were facilitated by the Afghan Taliban in Kabul, but failed in the end.

Since then, TTP has amplified its attacks in Pakistan and has targeted security installations with suicide bombings, targeted attacks and killings, claiming lives of many security personnel.

Pakistan, during its recent high-level meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC), admitted that the peace talks with the TTP had only resulted in rise in terrorist activities.

“The government has now decided that it would not have any further talks with the Taliban and would counter their terror attacks with military level offensive,” said the source.

Pakistan has also repeatedly maintained that the Afghan Taliban have failed to take any action against TTP militants, who are moving freely in Afghanistan and using its soil to plan, coordinate and carry out terror attacks.

On the other hand, the Afghan Taliban have denied Islamabad’s claims, stating that they stand by their promise to not allow its soil to be used against any other country.

UN continues to deliver cross-border aid into Syria

    [ad_1]

United Nations: Twenty-two truckloads of aid from the World Food Programme and the UN Children’s Fund (Unicef) crossed into Northwest Syria from Turkey, bringing the total of cross-border delivery to 557 trucks since February 9 in the wake of massive earthquakes, said a UN spokesman.

The UN has carried out 18 inter-agency cross-border missions to Northwest Syria since the first interagency visit to Idlib on February 14, said Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, at a daily press briefing on Friday.

On Thursday, a joint delegation by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and Unicef carried out a mission focussed on gender and accountability to affected people, including a field visit to a site for internally displaced persons in Kelly Mountain and to Al-Iman hospital in Sarmada, Idlib, he added.

“Our humanitarian colleagues also tell us that over 105,000 households have reportedly been displaced following the earthquakes. Many are staying with host communities or going back to their inhabitable homes, making it very difficult to estimate the total number of displaced,” said Haq as quoted by Xinhua news agency report.

The world body is currently supporting structural damage assessments of affected buildings to help facilitate families’ return. Longer-term shelter operations are also being identified for families that cannot return to their homes due to the scope of the damage, he added.

The $400-million appeal in response to the February 6 earthquakes has so far received $173 million, or 43.5 per cent of the funding required, he said.

UN continues cross-border aid to earthquake-hit Syria

    [ad_1]

United Nations: The world body is continuing its cross-border aid delivery into Northwest Syria in the aftermath of the massive earthquakes, a UN spokesman has said.

Twenty-two trucks carrying aid from the World Food Programme and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) crossed the Bab Al-Hawa crossing from Turkey, Xinhua news agency quoted Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, as saying.

Two additional trucks carrying tents provided by the UNHCR crossed the Bab Al-Salam crossing. In Northwest Syria, shelter needs are the top priority among displaced people, he said.

The Bab Al-Hawa crossing point was authorized by the UN Security Council for cross-border aid delivery into Northwest Syria.

After the February 6 earthquakes, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad decided to open the two crossing points of Bab Al-Salam and Al Ra’ee from Turkey to Northwest Syria for an initial period of three months to allow for the timely delivery of humanitarian aid.

Dujarric said many homes had collapsed in the aftermath of the earthquakes. As of Tuesday, more than 8,900 buildings had been destroyed or damaged in Northwest Syria, leaving 11,000 people homeless.

Other priorities, obviously, in addition to shelter needs and food, are cash assistance and supplies to cope with the harsh winter weather conditions, he said.
