Jamia aspirants from J-K concerned over removal of Srinagar as test centre

New Delhi: Several students from Jammu and Kashmir aspiring to get admission to Jamia Millia Islamia are in a fix after the university allegedly removed Srinagar as an entrance exam centre.
They say they will now have to spend thousands of rupees on travelling and accommodation in Delhi to sit in the entrance test. Several students alleged that they were getting Delhi as the only option when filling out the application forms online for admission to most undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes.
However, Jamia administration said the Srinagar Centre was not removed for all courses but had to be cancelled for some programmes as the number of applicants in that particular course was fewer than 50.

The admission prospectus had listed seven test centres Thiruvananthapuram, Lucknow, Delhi, Patna, Kolkata, Srinagar and Guwahati. Students were allowed to opt for any of the centres. The prospectus had mentioned that if the number of applicants is either 49 or less, the test for that course will be held in Delhi.
Students say this is unfair and puts avoidable economic burden on them to book air tickets and hotels. They have urged Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar to allow them to sit in entrance test at a centre in Srinagar.
“I have filled an application form for admission to an LLM programme and three applications for my sister in UG courses. There was no option for Srinagar. I cannot come to Delhi just for an entrance test. It will cost me over Rs 25,000 for travelling and accommodation,” Sameer Ahmed Sofia, 27, told PTI over phone from Srinagar.
“There are scores of students who share my concern. We have not received any communication why Srinagar was removed as the centre. I have asked many students whether their application forms showed Srinagar. All of them have said ‘no’,” he added.
Muneeb Ayub Bhatt, 25, has applied for a PhD course. His father is a carpenter and earns around Rs 400 per day.

“I have done my graduation and post-graduation from Srinagar. Now for a better opportunity and exposure, I want to come to Delhi. Why they are hindering our entry into Delhi? My father earns Rs 400 per day. He is the sole earning member and you are expecting me to come to Delhi to give an entrance test. Where would I stay and how will I manage the travel,” Bhatt said.
Hundreds of students from the Kashmir Valley appear for entrance tests across courses every year.
Jamia Millia Islamia provides reservation and relaxation under special provisions to candidates from Jammu and Kashmir. Their admission is considered over and above not exceeding two seats in the programmes offered by faculties.
The J&K Students Association said despite seats being reserved for students from the Union territory, the university has failed to provide exam centres in Srinagar, making it difficult for students to pursue their dreams.
With the entrance exams scheduled for the first week of June, the association has expressed concern that many students may miss the tests if a centre is not set up locally.
“It would not be possible for candidates staying in far-flung areas to take exams in Delhi due to the scorching heat and financial constraints. It is not possible for a majority of students to afford air tickets and book hotels. It will take them days to reach Delhi and students who have opted for more than one subject will have to stay longer,” the association’s national convenor Nasir Khuehami said.
The JMI has already notified exam schedules for different courses, but has not announced exam centres in Srinagar yet, despite repeated requests by students and parents, he said.
“The remoteness of exam centres should not be a barrier for Kashmiri students, particularly those from marginalised communities. For many, travelling to other states is an expensive and time-consuming process that they cannot afford,” Khuehami added.
Jamia Millia Islamia Registrar Nazim Husain Al-Jafri has termed the students’ allegations “baseless”, saying it takes lakhs of rupees to conduct entrance tests.
“We need to send examination papers, book a centre, hire examiners and supervisor, and send two individuals from the university. It costs us lakhs of rupees to conduct entrance tests. We have a rule that if the number of applicants is either 49 or less, the test of that programme will be conducted in Delhi,” Jafri said.
“It is not like only Srinagar centre has been cancelled. The cancellation has been done at other centres also. This has been notified also,” he added.

India concerned about global economic outlook: Nirmala Sitharaman

New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that despite this year’s projected growth rate of over 6 per cent for the Indian economy, it remains concerned about the global economic outlook and geopolitical environment.
She made the remarks on Wednesday while attending the Development Committee meeting of the World Bank-IMF Spring Meeting 2023 in Washington D.C.
Sitharaman mentioned that the World Bank should continue to work for its vision of a ‘World Free of Poverty’ and achieve its mission of ‘ending extreme poverty’ and ‘promoting shared prosperity’ in a manner that is inclusive, resilient and sustainable.

During her intervention, Sitharaman suggested that the global public goods should also be brought into the focus as the third goal.
The Finance Minister further mentioned that the “Evolution of the World Bank Group – A Report to Governors” provides a historic opportunity to think collectively on the evolution of the World Bank Group.

74% of Indians concerned about their personal financial situation: Report

New Delhi: Around 74 percent of Indians are concerned about their personal financial situation, as opposed to 50 percent globally, while 63 percent of Indian consumers are cutting back non-essential spending altogether, a new report said on Thursday.
According to the 2023 PwC Global Consumer Insights Pulse report, most Indian consumers expect to reduce their expenditure across all surveyed categories over the next six months, a significant decline in planned spend across all categories since the previous pulse survey in June 2022.
“Consumers will continue to demand world-class buying experiences in both physical and digital channels with work cut out for brands to reduce costs, enhance availability, and for ‘going local’. The silver lining here remains the unequivocal growths in adoption of digital channels and the desire to spend more on travel in the coming months,” said Ravi Kapoor, Partner and Leader – Retail & Consumer, PwC India.

Moreover, the report mentioned that the industries, including luxury and premium products, travel, and fashion, expect to see the greatest portion of consumer spending reductions over the next six months, whereas the groceries segment is expected to decline the least.
About 47 percent of Indian consumers say they will shop with retailers that offer free/discounted product delivery.
The report further said that half of the Indian consumers (50 per cent) said rising prices remain the most frequently experienced issue when shopping in-store, supply chain issues also dominate with larger queues and busier store locations (35 per cent), along with product availability (28 per cent), which is also impacting consumer behaviour.
In spite of a planned cut in spending and challenging economic conditions, Indian consumers say they are still willing to pay more for sustainable products.
Over 88 per cent of respondents say they would pay more for a product produced or sourced locally, made from recyclable, sustainable, or eco-friendly materials (87 per cent), or produced by a company with a reputation for ethical practices (87 per cent).

“Tensions are rising,” House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Michael McCaul (R-Texas) said during an interview on “Fox News Sunday.” “I think this is saber-rattling on the part of Putin.”
Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) described Putin as “a dangerous man,” and said the threat demonstrates the need for U.S. leaders — and those vying for leadership — to see that threat as vital to U.S. interests.
Speaking on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Warner said that if American support for Ukraine wavers, Putin could move on to threaten Poland or President Xi Jinping could take U.S. weakness as “more of a green light to potentially take action against Taiwan.”

On Sunday, NATO criticized Russia for what it described as “dangerous and irresponsible” nuclear rhetoric, though a NATO spokesperson said the organization had not seen any changes in Russia’s nuclear posture.

Canadian diaspora concerned over suspension of mobile internet in Punjab

Chandigarh: Diaspora in Canada is concerned over the recent development in Punjab regarding the suspension of SMS and mobile internet services, except the voice call, in the interest of public safety as the police launched action against ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief and Khalistan ideologue Amritpal Singh and his aides.
“I am receiving calls from my residents and am deeply concerned about reports coming out of Punjab, India regarding SMS and internet blackouts,” tweeted Sonia Sidhu, Member of Parliament for Brampton South, on Sunday.
“I hope the situation is resolved soon & Canadians travelling to the region are able to connect with their families and friends in Canada.”
Joining the issue, Iqwinder S. Gaheer, MP for Mississauga-Malton, tweeted: “I am troubled by what I am hearing from constituents and the reports coming out of Punjab, India: authorities have enacted the mass suspension of internet services and are preventing gatherings of more than 4.”
“Civil rights and liberties should be maintained in a democracy.”
Calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberal government to immediately contact their Indian counterparts to express concern regarding the suspension of civil liberties and the safety of Canadians abroad, Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party, tweeted: “I am deeply concerned by reports that India has suspended civil liberties and imposed an internet blackout throughout the state of Punjab.”
Replying to him, one user wrote: “What a hypocrite you are! You’re concerned about suspended civil liberties and an internet blackout in Punjab but you say nothing about it happening in Canada.”
Another user think Jagmeet Singh is being disrespectful. “Draconian measures were when truckers’ protests were crushed in Canada. Jagmeet Singh ji you supported the crushing of a democratic, peaceful movement by @JustinTrudeau now you want him to go feral over the suspension of mobile texts (home internet working fine) in Punjab!”

“If u are so concerned about Punjab then come to India, Punjab. It’s easy to pass judgement sitting in another corner and where you actually don’t know what’s happening,” another user wrote.
“Human rights are the basis of any democracy,” said charity United Sikhs. “The Indian state is setting up its own records for violating #HumanRights in every possible way to oppress the Sikhs in India. Why is there a mass atrocity of human rights violation against Sikhs in India? What are the grounds for Amritpal’s arrest?”
Meanwhile, the massive police search operation continued on the second day on Sunday to arrest Sikh radical Amritpal Singh, head of ‘Waris Punjab De’.
Jalandhar Police Commissioner Kuldeep Singh Chahal told the media that Amritpal Singh was declared a ‘fugitive’.
The police search operations are now mainly focused in Jalandhar district from where he managed to given the police a slip when it tried to intercept his vehicle to arrest him.
Amritpal’s father Tarsem Singh told the media the police should have arrested him before he left the house. “We don’t have any information about his whereabouts. They carried out a search at our residence for 3-4 hours but did not find anything illegal.”
He called the police action “unjustified” and said his son was weaning the youth off drugs. “Why the police were not acting against criminals and those involved in drugs,” he asked.
Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Chahal said Amritpal’s six gunmen were nabbed. “A manhunt for Amritpal Singh is on and we are hopeful that he will be arrested soon. A total of 78 people have been arrested so far and further searches and raids are underway,” he added.
“During the state-wide operation, nine weapons, including one .315 bore rifle, seven rifles of 12 bore, one revolver and 373 live cartridges of different caliber have been recovered so far,” the police said in a statement on Twitter on Saturday evening.
“Waris Punjab De elements are involved in four criminal cases relating to spreading disharmony among classes, attempt to murder, attack on police persons and creating obstructions in the lawful discharge of duties of public servants. FIR stands registered for the attack on Ajnala Police Station,” it added.

KCCI Concerned Over Exorbitant Airfares Affecting Tourist Business

SRINAGAR: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCC&I) has expressed concern over the exorbitant airfares that have been affecting the tourist business of Jammu & Kashmir and the travel movement of sick, aged, students, and businessmen. The KCC&I has urged the Minister of Home Affairs, the Union Minister for Civil Aviation Government of India, and the Director General, Civil Aviation to take action and ensure the implementation of the recommendations made by the Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism, and Culture.
The committee had taken stock of the situation emerging from the irrational mechanism adopted by some operators in league with some airlines manipulating the airfare. The KCC&I hailed the committee for making appropriate recommendations and observations to curb predatory pricing and prevent airlines from misleading passengers. The committee recommended the formulation of a pricing mechanism for airfares to ensure that passengers are not charged exorbitant prices.
The KCC&I has called for the immediate implementation of these recommendations in letter and spirit without any further delay. Additionally, the KCC&I has requested that airlines operate additional flights to meet the tourist rush for visiting the short-lived Tulip garden. This is also the time for the return of local citizens, students, and non-resident Kashmiris.
The KCC&I believes that the Ministry of Civil Aviation has a responsibility to the traveling public and the nation at large to ensure that predatory pricing mechanisms are not adopted by airlines under the guise of a free-market economy. The KCC&I hopes that the recommendations made by the committee will be implemented soon to ensure the growth of the tourism industry and the convenience of travelers in Jammu & Kashmir.

India shouldn’t be concerned over China-brokered Iran-Saudi deal: Iran

New Delhi: The China-brokered deal between Iran and Saudi Arabia to revive diplomatic ties should not be a matter of concern for India as the pact would provide regional stability and would be beneficial for New Delhi’s interests as well, Iranian ambassador Iraj Elahi said on Friday.
Under the deal, Iran and Saudi Arabia last week announced the full-fledged restoration of their diplomatic relations, seven years after severing the ties following a bitter row.
“I think it (the agreement) should not be a concern for India. It would be of benefit to India since it would help and intensify the stability and peace in the Persian Gulf region,” the envoy told a group of journalists.
“So it would be of benefit to India despite what has been done at the mediation of China,” he said.
The surprise announcement on the deal had taken the diplomatic circles in New Delhi by surprise.
Elahi said peace and stability in the Gulf region will benefit the Indian diaspora as well, besides resulting in greater economic engagement that would include India’s trade ties with various countries in the region.
India on Thursday welcomed the pact, saying it has always advocated dialogue and diplomacy to resolve differences.
“We have seen the reports in this regard. India has good relations with various countries in West Asia. We have deep abiding interests in that region,” Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said.

“India has always advocated dialogue and diplomacy as a way to resolve differences,” Bagchi said, without mentioning China’s role.
Asked whether Tehran is looking for investments in Iran by Riyadh under the deal, Elahi said it is expecting expansion of trade ties with both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
“We are looking forward to investments not only from Saudi Arabia, but also from the UAE. We believe that the region is at a critical point. The whole region — Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and different Arab states — have an understanding now that it would be beneficial to them to bridge the gap among themselves and plan for the future,” he said.
“Saudi Arabia has a huge economy. It is a member of G20 and has enough money to invest in Iran, but it is too soon to judge the issue,” Elahi said.
On the Chabahar port, the envoy said Iran believes that the Indian government has a positive approach towards it.
“Of course there are shortcomings from both sides. We understand the willingness of the Indian government towards Chabahar. We believe that Chabahar is not just an economic issue,” he said.
The ambassador said there is a need to view the Chabahar port project as a strategic engagement and not just as an economic partnership.
“For India, Chabahar is important. For Iran also, it is important. But Iran has different ports in all parts of the Persian Gulf. We can use different ports for transit and import and export. But Chabahar is an oceanic port. It is close to the Indian Ocean and closest to the route to Afghanistan,” he said.
The Iranian ambassador said there is a need to look at Chabahar beyond economic perspectives.
“Because of this importance, the speed of cooperation, the speed of progress and the speed of promotion in Chabahar should be faster than what it is now. It is important for India as well as Iran. It will be for our benefit,” he said.
Located in Sistan-Balochistan province on the energy-rich Iran’s southern coast, the Chabahar port is being developed by India, Iran and Afghanistan to boost connectivity and trade ties.
At a connectivity conference in Tashkent in 2021, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar projected the Chabahar port as a key regional transit hub, including to Afghanistan.

Buttigieg ‘concerned’ about increase in airline close calls

The summit is intended to convene various pieces of the aviation industry, including airlines, airports and associated unions, along with safety regulators, to try to identify and address any potential red flags that may be hiding in the data each airline must report.
Jennifer Homendy, the chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating all of the recent near-misses, said each one is complicated by the lack of cockpit voice recordings. Typically, these devices record on a two-hour loop.
“The six from this year all have one thing in common: The cockpit voice recorders were all overwritten,” Homendy said. She also noted that her agency has since 2018 recommended that planes be equipped with a cockpit voice recorder capable of storing at least 25 hours worth of audio — a standard that she said European regulators have had in place for more than a year.
Homendy said the Austin incident and a second incident in Burbank, Calif. were especially alarming instances of planes coming dangerously close to each other. In Burbank, where a Mesa Airlines flight was forced to go around a SkyWest flight as it was taking off, Homendy said the two planes came within 300 feet of each other.
“Too often we’ve seen the federal government and industry act after an incident, after lives are lost, once headlines are made,” Homendy said. “Our entire mission at the NTSB is to prevent that next accident.”
A POLITICO review of Federal Aviation Administration data shows that the first two months of 2023 showed a rise of near-collisions involving commercial planes across the country. During January and February, commercial jets experienced close calls at a higher rate than the previous five years combined.
Homendy said the NTSB is investigating six close calls at runways across the country since the start of the year. Additionally, the NTSB is investigating two wrong-way landings last year and two separate severe turbulence incidents on the same day in Hawaii last December, one incident where 36 people were hurt and another where a flight came within 800 feet of hitting the Pacific Ocean shortly after takeoff.
While all of those incidents remain under NTSB investigation, Homendy said that high turnover in the aviation industry since the pandemic, an increasingly congested airspace and the lack of adopting seven NTSB recommendations related to airport runways are all contributing factors to the troubling pattern of near collisions that contributed to the need for Wednesday’s summit.

“Today is not an academic exercise,” Nolen said. “We have to take these six near misses and treat them as if they have happened and that’s why we’re here today.”

Top VC firms deeply concerned at SVB collapse, Ashneer offers a solution

New Delhi: Top venture capitalist (VC) firms on Saturday issued a joint statement on the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), one of the largest US banks serving the global startup community, saying they are “deeply disappointing and concerning”.
Hemant Taneja, investor and managing partner at General Catalyst, said in a tweet that several VC leaders like Accel, Khosla Ventures, Altimeter Capital, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Mayfield Fund, Ribbit Capital, Redpoint Ventures and others met to discuss the aftermath of SVB’s downfall.
“Silicon Valley Bank has been a trusted and long-time partner to the venture capital industry and our founders. For 40 years, it has been an important platform that played a pivotal role in serving the startup community and supporting the innovation economy in the US,” they said in a joint statement.
The VC leaders said that in the event that SVB were to be purchased and appropriately capitalised, “we would be strongly supportive and encourage our portfolio companies to resume their banking relationship with them”.
Ashneer Grover, former founder of BharatPe, took a dig at Taneja and other VC firms: “Bhai khareed lo fir investors mil ke. Uske liye bhi Founder dhoond rahe ho jo mehnat kare? Lagta hai PMC (Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank) ki tarah mujhe hi koodna padega bachane!”
Grover had claimed that the acquisition of the crisis-ridden Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank (PMC) by Centrum-BharatPe consortium was the “smartest corporate move in history”.
He further tweeted that “ebanks don’t get saved by passing these bureaucratic UN type joint resolutions by people with no intent to get their hands dirty. It requires intent and balls of steel”.
On Friday, the US Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) took control of the SVB’s $175 billion in customer deposits.

The bank’s collapse has left several startups, including in India, worried who have exposure to its investments and have active accounts in the bank.
Meanwhile, the top VC leaders told startup founders that now is the time to diversify not panic.
“SVB is a huge loss for our community. If everyone had moved 3-6 months cash out of SVB vs taking all out, SVB might still be standing. Now this is the move — don’t repeat yesterday. Not helpful to keep speculating and create more panic,” Taneja posted.
