Justice Katju Challenges Christian Beliefs: Jesus as a Reformer, Not Divine Figure

Christians believe that Jesus Christ was the son of God, that he was resurrected to life after the third day of his death by crucifixion, that he performed miracles, etc, etc.

Justice Katju Challenges Traditional Christian Beliefs: Advocates Jesus as a Reformer, Not Divine Figure

As an atheist I obviously cannot believe all this. When there is no God, how can there be a son of God ? How can a dead person come alive after being dead for 2 days ? And since I believe in science, how can I believe in miracles ?

What I believe is this : at the time of Jesus, the Jewish priests in Palestine, and particularly in Jerusalem, had become corrupt, and the Jewish religion had become a means of deceiving the gullible Jewish people. Jesus, being a good man, was horrified seeing all this.

Most people who see wrong things going on all around them, remain silent, fearing that if they raise their voice against it, the powerful vested interests profiting from these wrongs will retaliate and do them harm.

However, there are some sensitive and good people who simply cannot tolerate this state of affairs, and become determined to expose and oppose it, whatever the risk. Jesus was one of these. His aim was certainly not to create a new religion, but to reform the Jewish religion and practices, particularly the crooked practices of the Jewish priests. This so infuriated the latter, who fearing that their vested interests would be adversely affected, got him crucified.

Now it seems that when he grew up, Jesus had become some kind of ‘sadhu’ ( like many who abound in India ). He claimed to be getting revelations and messages of God ( like Prophet Mohammad P.B.U.H 600 years later ), and had gathered numerous disciples and followers, particularly since he himself set very high personal moral standards of conduct. After his death, Jesus’ message was spread to many parts of the Roman Empire, particularly by Paul of Tarsus, who could do so because the Roman Empire provided security to travellers.

Jesus’ message was, in a nutshell, this : the Kingdom of God is at hand, i.e. it is imminent, and will come into existence very soon, within one’s lifetime, not in the remote future. So people should repent of their sins and become good, turning over a new leaf, and that will thereby send them to paradise when they die, where they will live a comfortable life, otherwise they will be sent to hell fire.

This message may not make sense to us today, but it made a lot of sense to people living 2000 years ago, when most people were superstitious and unscientific.
And it made a lot of sense to the slaves, artisans, and poor people of Rome, who together constituted about 90% population of Rome, and who toiled day and night, doing hard, continuous, unending, nerve wracking work of crushing drudgery, which stultified and degraded them. while the rich senators and merchants of Rome lived in great magnificence and luxury.

To escape from their miserable existence, the former readily accepted a religion which gave them a hope and prospect of leading a happy, comfortable afterlife, devoid of their sufferings. The preachers of this new religion were men who led austere, unblemished, very high personal moral lives, which made their words readily acceptable to the populace.

Once Christianity became well established in Rome, it rapidly spread to other parts of the Roman Empire, steadily gaining more and more converts, and this process was greatly accelerated by Constantine the Great, who became Roman Emperor in 306 A.D. and supported Christianity

I respect Christianity because it gave a degree of social emancipation ( even if mostly in imagination ) to the suppressed sections of society, and I respect it for its ethical teachings. But beyond that, being a scientific person, I regard its metaphysics, etc as mostly unscientific nonsense.

Kerala stops religious discourse in jails, Christian group upset

    [ad_1]

Thiruvananthapuram: An order by the Kerala Jails Department stopping all religious discourses in the jails for the benefit of the prisoners has drawn the ire of a Christian group.

The order, issued a few days back, said there will be no more permission granted to conduct religious discourses which saw priests from all the religions arriving in the jails to interact with the prisoners.

George Sebastian, an office bearer of the Assembly of Christian Trust Services (ACTS), a body of all Christian churches and prayer groups, deplored that such an order has come when the Passion Week (the Aweek leading to Easter Sunday is presently on.

    MS Education Academy

“The order bans all such interactions with the prisoners and no religious leaders will now be allowed entry to the jails. What has pained us is this has happened during the Passion Week, a holy time for all Christians. The leaders of ACTS will soon be meeting with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to see that this practise should not be discontinued as this interaction definitely is a way for the prisoners’ redemption,” he said.

Incidentally, this practice of leaders from various religions interacting with the prisoners for a fixed time a few days every month was there for long and now the top officials of the Kerala Police are tight-lipped on why it has been stopped. The buzz is that motivational speakers might be allowed.

Christian priest cremated in Indore after all-religion prayers

    [ad_1]

Indore: 70-year-old Christian priest was cremated in Indore on Tuesday evening after an all-religion prayer meeting.

Father Verghese Alengaden, founder of the Universal Solidarity Movement, was cremated at the electric crematorium at Rambagh Muktidham, an associate said.

Alengaden, who had undergone a heart surgery earlier this month and was suffering from a lung problem and other health issues, died at a city hospital on March 26.

“Before the cremation, Gayatri Mantra and Mahamrityunjaya were recited along with Christian prayers,” Neetu Joshi, a long-time associate of Alengadan’s, told PTI.

Before that, his mortal remains were kept at the city’s Red Church to enable people from different communities to attend an all-religion prayer meeting, he said.

“Alengaden never had any wealth in his name. He always said that after his death, he should be cremated in an electric crematorium instead of burying him because he did not want six-foot-long land to be occupied to build his grave,” Joshi said.

UP religious conversion case: Three Christian missioneries held

    [ad_1]

Three Christian missionaries were arrested on Sunday in the Sidhauli district of Uttar Pradesh for allegedly converting Hindus to Christians. In the, a group of Bajrang Dal workers barged into a Christian-owned house and created a ruckus alleging that the home is being used for religious conversion.

In the viral video which is making rounds on social media platforms, one Hindutva worker can be seen arguing with a purported Christian lady inside the house where other women were also present. The lady can be seen resisting and pushing the man back.

“Shut up and tell me what is going on here. All ladies here belong to the Hindu community and you have called them here secretly to convert them to Christianity,” says the Bajrang Dal member in the video. According to the police,  three accused who were allegedly involved in religious conversion have been booked under Anti conversion law.

“All three have been arrested and action has been taken as per the rules. Further investigation is on way,” said Yadvendra Yadav, a circle officer.

Anti-conversion laws are a set of judicial rules that restrict or prohibit the conversion of faith (proselytism) from one religion to another. It is a federal law in many countries. In India, there is no federal law but nine states have sanctioned their own laws (Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.

  • German Christian Democrats rewrite Merkel’s China playbook

German Christian Democrats rewrite Merkel’s China playbook

    [ad_1]

    germany merkel russian pranksters 95694

Press play to listen to this article

    Voiced by artificial intelligence.

BERLIN — Germany’s Christian Democrats, the country’s largest opposition group, are planning to shift away from the pragmatic stance toward China that characterized Angela Merkel’s 16 years as chancellor, claiming that maintaining peace through trade has failed.

It’s a remarkable course change for the conservative party that pursued a strategy of rapprochement and economic interdependence toward China and Russia during Merkel’s decade and a half in power. The volte-face has been spurred by Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine and Beijing’s increasingly aggressive stance — both economically and politically — in the Asian region and beyond.

According to a draft position paper seen by POLITICO, the conservatives say the idea of keeping peace through economic cooperation “has failed with regard to Russia, but increasingly also China.” The 22-page paper, which is to be adopted by the center-right Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) parliamentary group in the Bundestag around Easter, outlines key points for a new China policy.

In a world order that is changing after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Chancellor Olaf Scholz last year announced a Zeitenwende, or major turning point, in German security policy. Economy Minister Robert Habeck and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, in particular, have stressed the necessity of a comprehensive China strategy, an idea already mentioned in the coalition agreement to form Scholz’s government. Their ministries have elaborated two different drafts, but a comprehensive strategy is not yet in sight.

“We realize at this point in time, with some surprise, which is why we prepared and presented this paper, that the German government is significantly behind schedule on key foreign and security policy documents,” said CDU foreign policy lawmaker Johann Wadephul.

The foreword to the position paper states that “the rise of communist China is the central, epochal challenge of the 21st century for all states seeking to preserve, strengthen, and sustain the rules-based international order.” The CDU/CSU parliamentary group is open to working out a “national consensus” with Scholz’s government. That consensus, the group says, must be embedded in the national security strategy and in a European China strategy.

The relationship with China is described in the same triad fashion that was formulated by the European Commission in 2019 and is in the coalition agreement of the current German government. Under this strategy, the Asian country is seen as a partner, economic competitor and systemic rival.

But the CDU/CSU group’s paper says policy should move away from a Beijing-friendly, pragmatic stance toward China, especially on trade. “We should not close our eyes to the fact that China has shifted the balance on its own initiative and clearly pushed the core of the relationship toward systemic rivalry,” the text states.

Such an emphasis from the conservative group is remarkable given its long-held preference for economic cooperation and political rapprochement toward both China and Russia under Merkel. Before leaving office, for example, Merkel pushed a major EU-China investment deal over the line, though it was later essentially frozen by the European Parliament due to Beijing’s sanctions against MEPs.

“I say to this also self-critically [that] this means for the CDU/CSU a certain new approach in China policy after a 16-year government period,” Wadephul said.

The paper calls for a “Zeitenwende in China policy,” too, concluding that Germany should respond “with the ability and its own strength to compete” wherever China seeks and forces competition; should build up its resilience and defensive capability and form as well as expand alliances and partnerships with interest and value partners; and demonstrate a willingness to partner where it is openly, transparently and reliably embraced by China.

The CDU/CSU paper calls for a European China strategy and a “European China Council” with EU neighbors for better cooperation. A central point is also strengthening reciprocity and European as well as German sovereignty.

“Decoupling from China is neither realistic nor desirable from a German and European perspective,” according to the text.

To better monitor dependencies, the paper proposes an expert commission in the Bundestag that would present an annual “China check” on dependencies in trade, technology, raw materials and foreign trade, with the overall aim of developing a “de-risking” strategy.

Ariyalur’s district secretary of Vishwa Hindu Parishad Muthuvel has been arrested on Wednesday by the police for blackmailing a priest with Rs 25 lakhs.

According to reports, Muthuvel demanded Rs 25 lakhs from the priest Dominic Savio of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Ariyalur, Thanjavur district, failing which he would release videos to tarnish the latter’s image.

Muthuvel has been deeply engaged in Lavanya’s suicide case. The 17-year-old student from Sacred Hearts Higher Secondary School, Ariyalur, consumed poison on January 9 and died ten days later.

Before passing away, Muthuvel visited Lavanya in the hospital and recorded two videos of her. She said she took the extreme step as she was being forced to convert to Christianity. Allegations of torture after her refusal to convert were also raised by the girl.

The case created a political furore in DMK-ruled Tamil Nadu with the VHP and BJP leaders condemning the incident and blaming the state government for not putting a pin on the “blatant religious conversion” in the state.

On a plea filed by the girl’s father, the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court on January 21 passed an order to transfer the case to the CBI. The case is currently under investigation. However, on February 3, the state government filed an appeal in the Supreme Court challenging the order.

  • Christian stall at Delhi World book fair vandalised by right-wing goons

Christian stall at Delhi World book fair vandalised by right-wing goons

    [ad_1]

Chaos erupted when a group of right-wing workers vandalised a stall containing Christian spiritual books at the New Delhi World Book Fair held in Pragati Maidan on March 1.

A video has emerged on social media Twitter where around 30 men wearing saffron scarves and tilak on their forehead can be seen tearing posters of the New Testament Psalms and Proverbs.

Alleging that Christians target poor Hindu families for religious conversions, they tore copies of The Holy Bible and shouted, “Free Bible bandh karo, dharam parivartan bandh karo” (Stop distributing free copies of the Bible, stop religious conversion) ‘Jai Shree Ram’ and ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’.

The book fair had several stalls of different genres including different spiritual and religious books. The vandalised counter had put a tag for free Holy Bible, which triggered a few Hindutva men.

According to Indian Express, one of the volunteers said other stalls also distributed free texts from other religions.

“The men accused us of converting people by forcing them to take the books. We told them that we were only distributing free books to passersby. But they didn’t listen,” the volunteer was quoted by the Indian Express.

Mahindri Panchandham, a self-proclaimed member of Unite Hindu, led the vandalism. In the video, when some people from the crowd try to remind him that the Indian Constitution describes the country as a democratic nation where one is free to follow under their free will, Panchandham shot back saying, “Democracy gives the right to preach religion but not to lure poor Hindus and convert them.”

As people try to calm an agitated Panchandham down and reason with him, he refuses to listen and starts raising slogans in a louder tone.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police informed that no complaint was registered by the members of the book fair.

“We check the area and found that no books were torn. The group had only protested and was soon removed. There was no disruption or violence. The Gideons don’t wish to file a complaint and said the matter was sorted,” said a police officer.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad spokesperson Vinod Bansal said that Christian groups and missionaries are infamous for targeting poor Hindu families and tricking them into converting to Christianity. “These groups and missionaries convert people by forcing them to take books. We don’t support this and asked them not to do the same. There was no violence or anything,” he said.

Kerala: Complaint against Christian group for event on love, narcotic ‘jihad’

A complaint has been filed by the Student Islamic Organization (SIO) against Christian Association and Alliance for Social Action (CASA) for discussing topics that evoked hatred against the Muslim community in Kerala.

On February 26, CASA organised an awareness event in Pulpally, Wayanad district that spoke about ‘Love Jihad’, ‘Narcotic Jihad’ and child abuse. The audience attendance included school-going children.

Wayanad district officials Jyotish P T and A B Joy conducted the session. It shared the details of the events on its official Facebook page. It has several other posters and photos that feature campaigns against the Muslim community.

The complaint was filed by SIO Wayanad district president Muneeb N A Pulpally, who demanded strict action against those spreading communal hatred in the society.

Meanwhile, CASA Kasargod, on its official Instagram page has posted a reel that stated it will bring more ‘awareness’ towards ‘Love Jihad’, ‘Narcotic Jihad’ and child abuse and no one can stop them.

“We know what to teach our children. A Muslim Islamic organisation need not interfere. At least, we do not teach them how to cut a hand or behead a person. We will continue teaching or bringing awareness to subjects such as Love Jihad, Narcotic Jihad and child abuse around Kerala whenever we are given permission. No SIO can stop us from doing so,” CASA Kasargod stated.
