SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police Chief, Dilbagh Singh has stated that the police have recovered a perfume bomb. It is for the first time that such an explosive is said to have been seized during more than 30 years of counter-insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir.

The bomb is said to have been recovered from a government school teacher, Arif, who is a resident of the Reasi district. The recovery occurred during the ongoing investigations into the twin blasts in Jammu’s Narwal locality on January 21. Nine civilians were injured in the explosion that took place amidst high alert owing to Bharat Jodo yatra’s entry into Jammu.

“This is the first time we have recovered a perfume IED,” DGP Singh told a press conference in Jammu. “We have not recovered any perfume IED before. The IED will blast if anyone tries to press or open it. Our special team will handle that IED.”

It is basically a bottle of perfume that has been converted into a bomb. It explodes when one attempts opening it.

“Arif is a government employee and is an active militant of Lashkar-e-Toiba outfit. He was working at the behest of Qasim, a Reasi resident and his uncle Qamardin, also a Reasi resident, presently in Pakistan, who are part of LeT,” the DGP said. He said Arif was involved in three IED blast incidents—Shahstri Nagar, Katra and January 21 incident of Narwal, Jammu.

“So far we had seen IED with explosive materials, sticky bombs and timer fitted IEDs but a new type of IED was recovered from Arif which is Perfume IED. This IED is in a bottle form and seems like a perfume bottle but contains explosive material,” the DGP said, adding that “since the IED is new to us, experts will see how harmful and how powerful it can be. We have not touched it so far.”

Singh said the arrest and recovery was part of the 11-days investigations in the Narwal case. “Arif was a very clever operative. He had burnt all the evidence be that his clothes, shoes and that he even set ablaze his mobile phone as well. But police worked hard on even small inputs and leads that led to the arrest of Arif,” Singh said, asserting a strong dossier is in making about his activities.

Police also claimed that Arif, during interrogation has admitted to his role in the attack on a bus carrying Vaishno Devi pilgrims in which four people were killed in May 2022. As many as 24 passengers were injured in that blast.

Targeted Killings, Bomb Blasts Testimony To Deteriorated Security Situation In J&K: Rahul Gandhi

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Congress leader and Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said that there has been no change in the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir given the targeted killings and bomb blasts here. He, however, stated he would not go back to past, but would look forward to the best in the Union Territory.

Addressing a press conference in Taj Vivanta Hotel in Srinagar, Rahul Gandhi, as per the news agency KNO said he was not happy to what he saw in Jammu and Kashmir.

“In fact, I was saddened when I walked through J&K as nobody is happy here and Ladakh as well.”

He added restoration of democratic process and statehood is imperative and the fundamental right of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Gandhi, who was flanked by General Secretary Incharge Communication, Jairam Ramesh, Incharge J&K Rajni Patil, JKPCC president, Vikar Rasool Wani, former PCC president Ghulam Ahmad Mir, former MP Tariq Hameed Karra, PCC working president Raman Bhalla, former deputy chief minister Tara Chand and others, said the motive behind the Yatra was to spread love amid hatred being spread by BJP and RSS across the country.

“The yatra has culminated in Srinagar and main function will be held tomorrow. I got a lot to experience through this yatra, I met lakhs of people, talked to them, I have no words to describe my journey as I got a good response from the people all across including J&K. It was the best experience of my life,” he said.

Gandhi said during the Yatra people raised two important issues which included unemployment and price hike. “I thank all the people across the country, media and the Yatris, CRPF, police and others who extended their support to us,” he said.

He further said the Yatra was not Congress party’s Yatra, instead of party leaders, who walked most in it. “The Yatra gave an alternative vision to the people amidst existing BJP & RSS vision that is filled with hatred and violence. Now, the people have two days with them, one is aimed to suppress people and another is full of love and affection,” he said.

He further said this yatra has not ended but it is a first step as there is a lot more to do in future for an alternative vision for the people and some active measures will be taken in this regard.

About his yatra in J&K, he said he met a lot of people here and nobody is happy. “I met people in Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir, nobody was happy here. I am not happy with what I see in J&K, in fact, I got saddened when I walk through J&K. While entering J&K, a strange idea came to my mind about my family that descended from J&K and went to Allahabad,” he said.

He said it felt like he was going home and that was a powerful feeling. “I have affection towards people of J&K. I came here with open heart and open arms to help in whatever way I can. I was humbled with the reception we got. I think love and affection and listening is a powerful force,” he said while replying to a query.

On being asked about abrogation of Article and its restoration, he said they cleared their position in party’s working committee document.

About the improvment in security situation, he said the argument doesn’t work at a time of targetted killings, bomb blasts and other things.

“If the situation has improved, let Union Home Minister Amit Shah hold a rally from Jammu to Srinagar,” he said.

About the land laws, he said he has already spoke over the issue and whenever elected government is formed, it can take a decision accordingly.

Russia-Ukraine war: 86 pc of schools in Kyiv now have bomb shelters

    [ad_1]

Kyiv: The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has resulted in almost 86 per cent of schools having bomb shelters, CNN reported citing the head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, Oleksiy Kuleba on Monday.

Taking to his Telegram, Kuleba said that a total of 1,085 shelters have already been set up in educational facilities in the Kyiv region, owing to the circumstances.

“A total of 1,085 shelters have already been set up in educational facilities in Kyiv region,” said Oleksiy Kuleba, adding that it rounds up the tally to 86 pc that can operate in full-time or mixed formats.

With every passing day, the situation in Ukraine is becoming grave. Recently, Ukraine’s interior minister Denys Monastyrskyy was among at least 14 people killed after a helicopter crashed in a Kyiv suburb Wednesday, officials said.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the crash a “tragedy” and authorities have launched an investigation, reported CNN.

One child was among the dead and 25 others were wounded in Wednesday’s incident in the town of Brovary, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine said.

Monastyrskyy, 42, was in charge of the Ukrainian police and other emergency services. He is the highest-profile Ukrainian casualty since Russia launched its invasion last February.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin attended an event with veterans to mark the 80th anniversary of the lifting of the World War II siege of St Petersburg, then known as Leningrad, which Nazi German forces blockaded for nearly 900 days, reported Al Jazeera. He told the war veterans Russia was fighting in Ukraine to defend ethnic Russians and Russian speakers, who Moscow alleges are subject to systematic discrimination in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Kyiv rejects that allegation and says the Kremlin has used it as a pretext for what is simply an aggressive land grab.

However, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow saw no prospects for peace talks and reiterated the Kremlin’s position that there can be no negotiations with Zelenskyy’s government.

Russia has said talks are possible only if Ukraine recognises Moscow’s claims to Ukrainian territory in the country’s east and south. Kyiv says it will fight until Russia withdraws all of its troops from the country, reported Al Jazeera.

Roadside bomb explosion kills 2 govt soldiers in Yemen’s Shabwa

    [ad_1]

Aden: Two soldiers of Yemen’s government forces were killed and four others injured in an explosion in the country’s southeastern oil-rich province of Shabwa, a military official said.

A local military officer told Xinhua news agency on condition of anonymity on Saturday that an improvised explosive device on the roadside exploded when a motorcade of military vehicles that escorted trucks carrying diesel passed by in the Ar Rawdah district of Shabwa.

The IED, which was planted and remotely detonated by terrorists, also destroyed a military vehicle, the source said.

Security forces and a medical team were sent to the site and carried the wounded soldiers to a nearby hospital for treatment, he noted.

So far, no group has claimed the responsibility for the attack, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Yemen-based al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula network has exploited years of deadly conflict between the Yemeni government and the Houthi militia to expand its presence in the war-ravaged Arab country. It frequently uses hit-and-run tactics against Yemeni government forces while hiding out in rocky terrains and mountainous areas of Abyan and other neighbouring provinces, including Shabwa.

  • Ludhiana court bomb blast case: NIA carries out more raids in Punjab

Ludhiana court bomb blast case: NIA carries out more raids in Punjab

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday conducted simultaneous searches at two locations in Punjab’s Muktsar Sahib and Gurdaspur districts in connection with the Ludhiana court bomb blast case.

During these searches, cash amounting to Rs 10,16,000, mobile phones, SIM cards and diaries with incriminating content were seized, an NIA official said.

The NIA on January 7 filed a charge sheet against five accused including a Pakistan national in the matter.

Punjab Police’s former Head Constable Gagandeep Singh, who planted the bomb at the court complex on December 23, 2021, was killed as it suddenly went off. Six others were injured.

The case was initially registered at a Ludhiana police station, but later, it was taken over by the NIA.

“During investigation, it has been revealed that Pakistan-based ISYF/KLF terrorist handler Lakhbir Singh Rode had planned to execute IED blasts at various locations in Punjab. In order to execute this plans, he, in association with Pakistan-based smugglers, recruited India-based operatives to smuggle IEDs and to carry out blasts to cause maximum casualties and to strike terror among the general public,” the NIA said.

It said that in furtherance of the conspiracy, Rode, with the help of Pakistan-based cross-border arms-explosives-narcotics smuggler Zulfikar alias Pehalwan, Harpreet Singh alias Happy Malaysia, Surmukh Singh alias Sammu, Dilbagh Singh and Rajanpreet Singh, formed a terror gang to carry out blasts and smuggled weapons into India.

Rode used the smuggling channels of Pehalwan and his associates to deliver the IED to Gagandeep Singh.
