    SRINAGAR: In a shocking incident, a former minister of National Conference in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district visited the house of an accused in a drug peddling case to greet him after he was released on bail.

    In a video which has gone viral on social media, former minister and National Conference vice-president Choudhary Muhammad Ramzan can be seen greeting Abdul Majid Sofi, who was arrested for his involvement in a drug case in 2021 and was granted bail by a court few days ago.

    “Tuhi Chuw Mubarak (congratulations to you)” , Choudhary can be heard telling him in the video before entering his house.

    When contacted, Choudhary Muhammad Ramzan defended his action.

  • Kupwara Murder: More Details Emerge

    SRINAGAR: Days after the throat slit body of an eight year old girl was found in a village in Lolab area of Kupwara district, police on Monday said that the father of the minor committed the heinous crime and has been arrested.

    Addressing a press conference, SSP Kupwara said that while carrying out the investigation and corroborating the evidences they zeroed in on the family and the father of the girl, was the prime suspect.

    SSP Kupwara Yougal Manhas, said that M Iqbal Katana, who is the father of the minor, has emerged as the prime suspect in the case.

    Iqbal Khatana, a driver by profession as per police after cross questioning confessed to the crime and said that he killed his daughter in a fit of rage after having an argument with his wife.

    SSP further said on March 29 Iqbal had  an argument with his wife, who even slapped him. Iqbal  left his home in anger and took a knife along with him. He left home stating that he is going to fix his car tyre.’

    As per police, Iqbal left home to vent out his anger and end his life. He was followed by his minor daughter.

    “Iqbal gave her 10 rupees but she still kept following him and sat in the car with him. As the streets were deserted because of iftaar time, Iqbal parked his car at an isolated place and in a fit of rage choked his daughters throat first. Soon he realized about the gravity of the situation and thought of concealing the crime,’ SSP Kupwara said.

    To mislead police and frame someone else for the crime he slit the throat of the minor and dumped her body near a shed.

    “He went back to his home and on being asked about the girl’s whereabouts he feigned ignorance and filed a missing report in a police station,” SSP said.

    In the mean time Iqbal’s wife accompanied by the villagers found the body dumped near shed and soon mosques started reverberating with announcements of the same.

    SSP Kupwara further stated that father of the minor is the only accused who so far has emerged out in this case and the weapon used to commit crime has also been recovered. M Iqbal Khatana is under police custody and we will proceed further legally.

    Earlier, the family had said that their daughter ventured out from her home to go to a shop to buy something.

    However, till late in the evening, she couldn’t reach home, following which the family members launched widespread searches to find her , and later her throat slit body was found by her mother near a shed at their home.

    SRINAGAR: In a shocking update to the murder case of the 9-year-old girl in Kupwara, the father has been arrested for the heinous crime. The girl’s throat-slit body was found in the Zab village of Khurhama area in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, and the incident had left the community in shock.

    After launching an investigation into the matter, the police arrested the girl’s father, whose motive behind the crime has not been revealed yet. The arrest has been confirmed by SSP Kupwara, who stated, “The father has been arrested for murdering his daughter.”

    According to the family, their daughter had gone out to buy something from a shop on Wednesday evening. However, when she did not return home until late in the evening, the family began searching for her.

    The mother later found her daughter’s body with her throat slit near a shed at their home. She was immediately rushed to the hospital, but was declared dead by the doctors.

    SRINAGAR: Kiran Patel, an alleged conman facing a new case of fraud in Ahmedabad, is being transported by a police team from the city’s crime branch. They departed from Srinagar by road and are expected to arrive in Ahmedabad by Monday evening.

    “The police team has left for Ahmedabad from Srinagar on Sunday morning after completing the procedure. He is being brought via road and will reach in 36 hours,” reported The Indian Express, quoting Chaitanya Mandlik, the deputy commissioner of police city crime branch.

    After being investigated for allegedly posing as a Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) official and enjoying related privileges, Patel was in judicial custody in Jammu & Kashmir until March 31. The Gujarat police applied for a transfer warrant, as reported, to continue his prosecution in Ahmedabad.

    Last month, Jagdish Chavda, brother of former BJP minister Jawahar Chavda, filed an FIR at the detection of crime branch police station in Ahmedabad. The FIR names Kiran Patel and his wife Malini for allegedly defrauding Jagdish of approximately Rs 15 crore in 2022, under the pretext of renovating his residential property in the Shilaj area of Ahmedabad.

    IPC sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 170 (personating a public servant), and 120B (criminal conspiracy) were used to book both Patel and Malini.

    Malini is on a six-day remand of the DCB.

  • EC Team Visiting JK This Month

    SRINAGAR: Election Commission (EC) of India headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar is likely to visit the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir in mid April to assess ground situation.

    As per media reports, The Election Commission (EC) will be visiting both the Jammu and Kashmir regions and the trip could last two to three days.

    While the detailed schedule of the visit hasn’t been made public yet, all the stakeholders have been asked to make preparations for presentation before the Commission, Deccan Herald reported.

    The move comes days after EC Rajiv Kumar said that there is a vacuum in Jammu and Kashmir and that needs to be filled soon.

    Herald reported that the EC team is also expected to review the process for Summary Revision of electoral rolls which will be published on May 10, unless the date is extended.

    SRINAGAR: Weather department here forecast fairly widespread light to moderate rain and thunderstorm over Jammu and Kashmir during next 24 hours.

    A meteorological department official here said that fairly widespread to scattered light rain and thunderstorm was expected during the subsequent two days in J&K.

    Regarding rainfall during the last 24 hours till 0830 hours today, the MeT official said, Srinagar received 0.3mm, Qazigund 00mm, Pahalgam traces, Kupwara 2.0mm, Kokernag traces Gulmarg 1.2mm and Jammu 0.2mm.

    Regarding temperature, the MeT official said that Srinagar recorded a low of 7.9°C against 6.7°C on the previous night and it was 1.5°C above normal for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 5.1°C against 3.5°C on the previous night and it was 0.7°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 3.0°C against 2.7°C on the previous night and it was 1.3°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of 5.2°C against 3.1°C on the previous night and it was 0.1°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

    Gulmarg recorded a low of 0.5°C against minus 0.6°C on the previous night and it was 0.1°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

    In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 7.2°C against 6.6°C on the previous night and it was 2.0°C above normal for the north Kashmir area.

    Jammu recorded a low of 16.3°C against 12.3°C on the previous night. It was 0.8°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

    Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 7.5°C (above normal by 0.5°C), Batote 9.0°C (above normal by 0.1°C), Katra 14.0°C (0.5°C below normal) and Bhadarwah 6.3°C (0.7°C below normal). Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 2.5°C and 3.6°C respectively. (GNS)

    SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir police on Monday morning recovered a consignment of arms and ammunition from a suspected drone dropped packet in Rakh Barutia village of Vijaypur in Samba district.

    Official sources said that information regarding some suspicious material was received after which a team from Samba police rushed to the site and conducted searches during which a yellow coloured packet was found lying near bushes.

    “Three pistols, six magazines, 48 bullets and four hand grenades have been recovered from this packet,” they said.

    Additional Superintendent of Police Samba, Surinder Chowdhury said that the packing of packet and a long plastic string recovered along with suggests it was dropped via a drone.

    He said they are investigating the matter, while teams of bomb disposal squad and forensics were called in and the packet was opened as per SOPs. (KNO)

    Rana described Jammu as a miniature India where people of all faiths and ethnicities are living in harmony and peace from times immemorial. He said the pluralistic region of Jammu has all along encouraged all the religions, ethnic groups, regions and sub-regions to unite and work for the common cause of making the life of people better.

    Rana said every religion teaches love and compassion and the spiritual land of India has emanated the message of humanity and guided humanity to peace, prosperity and spiritual bliss. This glorious heritage and legacy has to be sustained and strengthened by spreading the divine message of love, compassion and righteousness.

    “Unity in diversity has been the greatest strength of India”, he said, adding this is the mantra that has been driving the nation to become the world leader.

    “We are an extended family and committed to sharing each other’s joys and miseries”, he said, adding that he has all along remained at the beck and call of the people for helping them overcome their problems by taking up the issues concerning the constituency at appropriate forums.

    SRINAGAR: Different cycle tracks that are coming in various parts of Srinagar city will ease the traffic congestion. An official said that Srinagar city will present a different look after the completion of Smart City works. He said that over 100 cycling points will be created in different parts where people can take cycles on rent.

    The official told news agency Kashmir News Trust that work is being fast-tracked on cycle tracks, smart vending zones, VMDs, and parking lots among other new projects started under the Smart City project in Srinagar.

    Since 2020, work on 5-km -long cycle track is underway on the North-South corridor from Elahibagh junction to Soura junction.

    ‘The new cycle tracks would give cyclists a feel of the heritage and culture of Srinagar,” said the official.

    Pertinently, last year, District Administration Srinagar collaborated with a Bhopal-based startup to give a boost and encourage people to use cycles on Srinagar roads. “Using cycles will not only reduce pollution but it will also ease the traffic congestion,” the official added. [KNT]

    SRINAGAR:  Jammu and Kashmir Sunday reported 19 fresh cases of Covid-19, taking the number of active cases to 148 while no death was reported in the last 24 hours.

    Quoting an official, KNO reported that among 19 new cases, 18 have been reported from Kashmir division and one from Jammu division.

    He said that the total number of positive cases in Kashmir have reached to 305,631 including 303,074 recoveries and 2,433 deaths, while total number of positive cases in Jammu division have reached to 174,129 including 171,753 recoveries and 2,352 deaths.

    He further said that the total number of active cases in Jammu and Kashmir are 148 including 124 from Kashmir division and 24 from Jammu division.

    “Among the fresh 19 cases today, 06 are from Srinagar, 01 from Baramulla, 04 from Budgam,01 from Kupwara, 01 from Bandipora, 04 from Ganderbal and 01 from Kulgam in Kashmir division and one from Ramban in Jammu division,” he said.
