    SRINAGAR: The holy month of Ramadan is one of the most significant periods for Muslims worldwide, and it is celebrated with great fervour in Jammu & Kashmir as well. The month of Ramadan is observed by Muslims as a time for self-reflection, spiritual growth, and increased devotion to Allah. The highlight of this month is the Shab-e-Qadr or the Night of Power, which is considered one of the holiest nights in Islam.

    This year, Shab-e-Qadr was celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion throughout Jammu & Kashmir. After a gap of three years, the Isha and Taraweeh prayers were held in the historic Jama Masjid Srinagar, the spiritual hub of Kashmiri Muslims. A large number of people from across the valley gathered at the grand mosque to seek forgiveness from Allah on this Night of Power.

    The Jama Masjid Srinagar is a significant religious landmark in Jammu & Kashmir and has been the center of Islamic teachings and spirituality for centuries. The mosque has played a vital role in shaping the religious and cultural identity of the people of the valley.

    However, this year’s celebrations were marred by the absence of Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq, the head of Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid. Dr Farooq has been under detention for nearly four years, and as per the statement issued by Anjuman, he could not lead the collective prayer or deliver the sermon on the Night of Power.

    The Anjuman expressed its disappointment at Dr Farooq’s continued detention and called for his unconditional release on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. The Anjuman also expressed hope that the authorities would consider the importance of Dr Farooq’s role in the religious and spiritual life of the people of Jammu & Kashmir.

  • Mutton Crazy Kashmir Consumes Over 800 Truckloads Of Sheep This Ramadhan

    SRINAGAR: Amidst fluctuating mutton rates, the demand for mutton has increased in the Valley with over 800 truckloads of sheep consumed during the holy month of Ramadan so far.

    “Nearly 30-35 trucks loaded with sheep arrive in Kashmir on a regular basis in the past 27 days of Ramadan,” Mehraj ud Din, General Secretary of Mutton Dealers Association said.

    He said that there is no shortage of mutton in Kashmir, adding that the shortage of mutton would be possible in case the highway is closed for vehicular movement amid the prevalent weather conditions.

    The General Secretary of the association further informed that so far a total of 811 trucks loaded with Sheep arrived in Kashmir since the beginning of Ramadan. “30-35 trucks arrive in Kashmir on a daily basis. The number of trucks ahead of Eid will go up to 160 a day,” he said.

    Moreover, the consumers continue to complain that the mutton is being sold at Rs 650-700 per kg, adding that there has been no proper check on the ground as it seems that the mutton dealers and butchers have been let loose to loot the public as per their will.

    “One fails to understand the need of issuing a rate list when it is not being implemented on the ground. It seems that the authorities concerned are reluctant to act against the mutton dealers and have been maintaining silence over the issue,” a consumer said.

    He further said that a few months back, the concerned officials started a drive to act tough against the mutton dealers, but all in vain as the step has not yield any results for the consumers. (KNO)

  • Minimal Access Heart Surgery Successfully Performed At Super Speciality Hospital

    SRINAGAR: A minimally invasive heart surgery was performed at the Super Specialty Hospital (SSH) in Jammu.

    Dr Shyam Singh, the Chief Surgeon at SSH, said that heart surgeries through small incisions have evolved over the years and become standardized. “These procedures need expertise and perseverance to make them a routine,” he said after carrying out a Heart Valve replacement procedure on a young female patient with Rheumatic Heart Disease from a far-off village called Chansri, Mughal Maidan Kishtwar.

    In this procedure, Dr Singh said, a small incision is made below the right breast to undertake the entire operation, and the fine scar hides in the breast crease and is cosmetic in female patients. The surgery requires less blood transfusion and less pain-relieving medication. The patient was able to move around in the ward the next morning, which is normally not possible in a conventional surgery, Dr Singh said.

    Furthermore, the patient had a rare blood group of O negative, and there was minimal blood loss during the procedure, according to Dr Singh.

    The surgical team included Dr Shyam Singh, Dr Ishtiyak Ahmed Mir, and Dr Arvind Kohli, while the anesthesia team was headed by Professor and HoD Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia Dr Puja Vimesh, who conducted the per-operative and postoperative management along with Dr Rasmeet Kour, Dr Vikas, Vikas Sharma, Arif, Sonal, and Abhiranjan. Charanjit Singh and Roshan Lal managed the vital parameters of the patient while the patient was on Heart lung machine during operation while theatre scrub sister Angmo helped to carry out the procedure.

    Principal GMC Jammu Professor Dr Shashi Sudan lauded the efforts of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Department of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiology to make such surgeries possible and routine at SSH Jammu under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme, for which the Patients do not have to pay from their pockets. She further said that the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeons (CTVS) has been routinely doing open heart surgeries for the last two years, and very shortly Bypass surgeries (CABG) shall also be started, which shall be followed by starting Super-speciality DNB CTVS courses.

    Dr Sudan said that the department has already applied for DNB Vascular Surgery courses and is most likely to get permission soon. (KNO)

  • Inter-District Burgulary Gang Busted, 11 Arrested

    SRINAGAR: Srinagar police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested 11 thieves of an inter-district Burglar Gang while the stolen property worth lakhs of rupees has been recovered. Besides, the cash as proceeds of sale of stolen property has also been recovered while three vehicles have been seized as well.

    A police spokesman in a statement said that on the intervening night of March 02-03, 2023 theft occurred at Rawatpora Baghat.

    “Accordingly P/S Sadder received an information that thieves barged into the house Abdul Rehman Rather S/O Mohd Shaban Rather R/o Rawathpora Baghat and decamped with jewellery and cash.On receipt of this FIR no 18/2023 u/S  457,380,411 IPC was registered in Police Station Sadder and investigation was set in motion,” police said.

    During the course of investigation, several accused persons identified as Ab Qayoom Guroo S/o Mohd Shafi Guroo R/o Rabtar Gund Roshan Ganderbal, Nazakat Ahmad khan S/o Nazir Ahmad khan R/0 Tikeri Udhampur, Arif Ahmad Guroo @ Tasleem arif S/o Mohd Shafi  R/o Rabtar Gund Roshan Ganderbal, Shareef Ahmad Guroo S/o Mohd Shafi R/O rabtar Gund roshan Ganderbal, 5.Sameer Hussain S/o Gh Hussain R/o Sultanpora Pattan, Asif Hussain Dar S/o Gh Hussain Dar R/0 Sultanpora Pattan, Shabaz Hussain laway S/o Mohd Afzal Laway R/o Sultanpora Pattan, Ab Rashid Guroo S/o Sanullaha Guroo R/0 Rabtar Gund Roshan Ganderbal, Arif Ahmad Garoo S/o Sanullaha Guroo R/0 Rabtar Gund Roshan, Mohd Haneef Guroo S/o Sanullaha Guroo R/0 Rabtar Gund Roshan and Mohd Maqbool laway S/o Gh Mohd Laway R/0 Sultanpora Pattan, were arrested.

    The stolen property 168 gms Gold , Cash Rs 70000, two Vehicles  and a Pulsar Bikewere recovered from their possession.

    First four among the mentioned in the list of accused are main thieves, who committed Baghat theft while the rest are receivers of the stolen property, police said.

    “During investigation four main accused pertaining to the said case were arrested from Pulwama and Kulgam districts of south Kashmir. Two accused namely Qayoom Ahmad Gurooo R/o Gund Rabitar Ganderbal & Nazakat Ahmad khan R/O Bathindi Jammu were arrested from Naina Batpura Pulwama and other two Tasleem Guroo and Arif Guroo r/o Gund rabitar Shadipora from Amono Kulgam,” police said.

    On their disclosure five more accused who were receivers of stolen property were arrested from Ganderbal and Baramullah districts in different raids, police said.

    “One interesting fact about the gang is that it is being operated by three brothers from the same house hold, who closely coordinate these thefts in the areas of different districts and police Stations across the valley. Moreover, further investigation is going on to unearth more emerging facts,” police said—(KNO)

    SRINAGAR: A man, reportedly an ex-serviceman, shot himself and his wife in Kishtwar. Both have been hospitalised.

    A police official said that Ghulam Hussain of village Thakrie shot his wife with 12 bore rifle.

    The official said the lady survived and the man later shot himself and is now critical.

    The duo has been shifted to the hospital and the police have started an investigation into the matter, he said. (KNO)

    SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir reported 76 fresh covid-19 cases while there was no death due to the virus during the last 24 hours, officials said on Tuesday.

    They said that 43 cases were reported from Jammu division and 33 from Kashmir Valley, taking the overall tally to 481064. Among the cases, 174676 are from Jammu division and 306388 from Kashmir Valley.

    Providing district wise details officials said that Jammu reported 30, Udhampur six,  Rajouri one, Doda two, Kathua one, Samba 0, Poonch one, Ramban 0, Reasi two, Srinagar 10, Baramulla three, Budgam 11, Pulwama one, Kupwara 0, Anantnag two, Bandipora three, Ganderbal 0, Kulgam two, Shopian one.

    There was no death either from Jammu division or Kashmir during the time. So far 4789 people have succumbed to the virus and among them include 2356 from Jammu division and 2433 from the Valley.

    Besides, they said, 91 Covid-19 patients recovered during the last 24 hours, 43 from Jammu division and 48 from Kashmir Valley. There are now 723 active cases,345 in Jammu and 345 in Kashmir. (GNS)

    SRINAGAR: Chief Secretary, Dr Arun Kumar Mehta while chairing the 175th board meeting of Jammu and Kashmir Minerals Ltd, emphasised over the need for a third-party audit to evaluate the performance of the corporation’s mines.

    He stated that the audit would assess whether the mines are operating at their optimal condition and determine if there is potential to generate more employment within these mining facilities.

    Dr Mehta also called for the development of a mining plan, with expert consultation, to increase the output of the Kalakote coal mines.

    The Chief Secretary urged upon the Corporation that all of their activities should aim at boosting the economy of Jammu & Kashmir. He commended the corporation’s financial records over the past three years and suggested holding quarterly meetings for better coordination and implementation of decisions.

    During the meeting, the Board unanimously agreed that in order to avail the funding under NMET (National Mineral Exploration Trust), J&K Minerals Limited shall surrender the Lease Hold Rights of Sapphire Mine so that Ministry of Mines can take up the work.

    Furthermore, the Board approved e-Auction of rough sapphire to promote transparency.

    SRINAGAR:  Former Deputy Chief Minister JK, Muzaffar Hussain Baig on Tuesday said that assembly elections and restoration of statehood will likely be in place after new government formation will take place in Centre. He said abrogation of Article 370 and 35(A) was an extraordinary decision of Government of India to deal with extraordinary situation.

    KNS reported that the former Deputy CM Muzaffar Hussain Baig said, “I think neither assembly elections will be held nor statehood to JK will be returned back until there is new government formation in the Centre.

    “GoI want huge participation of people in forthcoming elections here so they will take some steps including restoration of statehood after 2024 elections across the country. The huge participation of people in polls is possible only once they will restore statehood to JK, so GoI will give it back after 2024 elections at the centre,” Muzaffar Baig said.

    He said since article 370 and 35(A) were revoked, Kashmir witnessed no rebellion against India.

    “The people did not  indulge in stone pelting and other things after reading down of article 370. Hundred welfare schemes have been implemented in JK which were not executed earlier. I feel there will be a huge participation of people in upcoming elections whenever it will be held,” he said.

    To a query, the former Deputy CM said some people termed the present situation in J&K as “peace of graveyard” which is not reality. “With near elimination of militancy people of J&K and particularly people of Kashmir are in a positive frame of mind. People have adopted realistic approach. For peace in J&K, I give credit to people as they chose the path of realistic politics to let peace prevail here,’ he said.

    He said the local political leaders should keep their tune low against New Delhi. “Our politicians at this juncture should think about the interest of people instead of gaining personal points. Elections cannot be held in an overnight. It needs some steps to be taken on ground, and GoI is working on that,” he said.

    When asked about former CM J&K Ghulam Nabi Azad’s quit from Congress, Baig said he may have not received such importance from present leadership in the Congress which he was receiving since the times of Indira Gandhi. “He was dear of Indira Gandhi. His quit from the Congress was not only an emotional step but he was willing to work for his own people at local level. He is a true nationalist,” Baig said.

    About abrogation of Article 370 and 35(A), the former Deputy CM said extraordinary situation demands extraordinary decisions. “People were getting killed due to militancy and government took an extraordinary decision and at the same time it introduced positive and welfare schemes for people”.

    About Gupkar Alliance which was formed to fight for restoration of Statehood to J&K, the former Deputy CM said “The draft of Gupkar declaration was given by me and former-politician-turned-IAS officer Shah Faisal wrote the draft. This was an act of hope but practically that could not be implemented”.

  • NCM Says It Lacks Role In Granting Hindus A Minority Status In Jk

    SRINAGAR: Clearing its stand on declaring Hindus a minority community in Jammu and Kashmir, The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) on Monday said that the commission has nothing to do with the granting of minority status to any community in the country.

    The Indian Express reported that member NCM, Syed Shahezadi on Monday said that if Government wants to grant minority status to Hindus, including Kashmiri Pandits, in Jammu and Kashmir and parliament wants to enact a law for the same, let them do it.

    She said that the decision is out of the commission’s bounds and Supreme Court is the absolute authority to take the final call.

    “The commission has categorically made it clear that they are not the law makers and it is for Parliament and the Supreme Court to take a decision on this matter,’’ Shahezadi said.

    The NCM member earlier in the day held discussions with UT Chief Secretary Dr Arun Kumar Mehta on implementation of centrally funded welfare schemes for minorities in Jammu and Kashmir.

    She further said the NCM aims at setting up minority commissions in every state and UT of the country and the Commission will write to the government for setting up one in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir as well.

    Pertinently, Supreme Court in November last year had asked the Centre for completing consultations with states on the demand to grant minority status to Hindus in states where their numbers are below other communities.

    This followed the government submission before court that it had received comments from 14 states and UTs and has sent reminders to others to send in their views at the earliest.

    SRINAGAR: Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, CEO Mission Youth J&K and Secretary to the Government, along with DC Baramulla Dr Syed Sehrish Asghar, have been chosen to receive the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration, which is India’s highest honor in civil services. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has congratulated both Dr Choudhary and Dr Asghar on their accomplishment.

    Shahid has become the first person to win the PM award for the third time, thanks to his innovative work with Mission Youth, which has put J&K at the forefront.

    Meanwhile, Sehrish received the award for excelling in the Aspirational Districts category, specifically for her work in Baramulla district. The key achievements of Baramulla’s Aspirational District Programme that led to the Deputy Commissioner’s recognition include the creation of Birth Waiting Wards in Primary Health Centres and Community Health Centres, diagnostic service upgrades at all delivery points, and the distribution of Poshan Tracker Tabs to all Anganwadi workers.

    The Deputy Commissioner provided farmers with support through various measures such as plant protection, nursery strengthening, robust root stocks, and quality planning material.

    Additionally, a marketing facility was established in Sopore, the second largest Fruit Mandi in Asia. In the district, Severe Acute Malnutrition rates dropped from 3% to 0.01% and Moderate Acute Malnutrition rates reduced from 11.93% to 0.039%. To address the critical health sector gap, a two-year paramedical diploma course has been launched for 300 students in the border area. Lastly, 56,215 PM Jan Dhan Yojana accounts have been opened in Baramulla district as part of the financial inclusion initiative.
