  • Court Rejects Bail To Five Solders Arrested In Drug Peddling

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: A Kashmir court has turned down the bail application of five soldiers who were arrested in a drug peddling case, NDTV reported. The court ruled that their detention is required to lay hands on other accused.

The five soldiers were operating the drug-peddling gang while being posted at Panzgam in Kupwara. They were arrested last month and accused for running the drug cartel from Tangdhar, a border town located on the Line of Control (LoC).

The bail application was moved before the Additional district and sessions judge, Kupwara, who rejected the plea. The court observed that soldiers were supposed to protect society but regretted this bunch worked in contravention of it.

“According to the police, drugs were coming from Pakistan through Tangdhar sector and five soldiers posted in Panzgam area of Kupwara were involved in drug trafficking,” the NDTV report said, identifying the accused soldiers as Naib-Subedar Puran Singh, Anil Kumar (driver) Sepoy Sushil Kumar, Naik Waseem Ahmad Mir and Mohammad Shafiq Khan.

The soldiers apparently were working with four civilians who were identified as Mashkoor Sheikh (working as a porter with Army), Mohammad Yousaf Kothari, Saleem Sheikh and Mohammad Imran Teli.

This is the second time in the last two months that security personnel have been arrested for drug smuggling from the Line of Control in Kupwara district.

The report said that federal investigator, NIA arrested a BSF officer posted in Handwara – also part of the frontier Kupwara district, “on charges of cross-border drug smuggling linked with the Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorist group”. Identified as Romesh Kumar, report said Rs 91 lakh cash was recovered from Kumar.

Offensive skit case: 9 including students arrested in Bangalore

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Following the objections raised by Dalit organisations and student groups to a skit that allegedly defamed Dr B.R. Ambedkar, the Karnataka Police arrested nine people, including the Principal and seven students of Jain University’s Centre for Management Studies (CMS) here.

Dr. Dinesh Nilkant, the Principal from Jain (Deemed-to-be) University and seven students pursuing fifth-semester in BBA course and the controversial event’s programme co-ordinator have been arrested, according to police on Tuesday.

The Dalit organisations have given a bandh call for Tuesday in protest.

The controversial skit was played at the campus during the ‘MadAds’ competition of Jain University Youth Fest 8.

After the arrest, the accused were presented before the court and remanded to judicial custody for four days.

The accused were booked under IPC Section 153 A for creating enmity between different groups and SC, ST (Prevention of Atrocities Act). The university issued an unconditional apology for the development and stated that the university does not approve of certain words used against Ambedkar and Dalits.

Karnataka Congress had raised concern over the incident of casteist slur being used in a skit performed during the college fest in Bengaluru. The party on its social media handle stated that a video containing abusive and objectionable content on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Dalit communities is being exhibited in a programme organised at Jain College in Bengaluru. The City Police Commissioner must act in this regard.

“The police should take cognizance of the incident and initiate legal action,” the Congress demanded.

The skit was performed by a group of students ‘The Delroys Boys’, who tendered an unconditional apology for the presentation. However, the debate over the issue is rising.

The incident had come to light after a group of students published an online petition on Jhatkaa.org. The petition stated the college contingent from Jain University’s Centre for Management Studies (CMS) staged an incredibly casteist and insensitive skit at the event.

The anonymous petitioners objected to the normalization of caste discrimination in the pretext of humour. The skit was performed as part of ‘MadAds’, a segment at the fest where the participants had to advertise imaginary products along lines of humour.

The Delroys Boys, the theatre group from CMS, who are in the thick of controversy, in their skit, exhibited a man belonging to the lower caste attempting to date an upper caste woman.

Akshay Bansode, State Member of the Vanchit Bahujan Yuva Aghadi has filed a police complaint in Maharashtra under provisions of the Atrocity Act and IPC. The complainant had urged the police to treat the complaint as FIR and initiate action against the performers and University.

Sources said that the controversial skit was performed at other platforms. The Delroys Boys maintained that they apologize to everyone they have spoken badly about and genuinely they apologize for their mistake.

Former Pak Finance Minister to be arrested for derailing IMF deal

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: The Pak Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has sought permission from the Interior Ministry to arrest former Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin in a case pertaining to his alleged role in the derailment of the deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), a media outlet reported.

The FIA completed a preliminary inquiry into Tarin’s audio leaks and saw his leaked conversations as an ‘attempt to disrupt’ the IMF loan programme and funds, thereby ‘causing harm’ to the national interest, Dawn reported.

The probe agency sought approval of the Interior Ministry to initiate legal proceedings against Tarin, leading to his arrest, the media outlet reported, citing sources.

Two audio leaks had surfaced in August 2022 in which a man purportedly former minister Tarin can be heard guiding Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab finance ministers, belonging to the PTI, to tell the PDM coalition government in the Centre and the IMF that they would not be able to commit to a provincial budget surplus in light of the monsoon floods that wrought havoc across Pakistan.

In a notice issued to Tarin in September 2022, the FIA said that an inquiry had been initiated against his alleged role on the basis of the audio leak. “In it, you are provoking him (Taimur Saleem Khan Jhagra, Finance Minister of KP) to write a letter to the federal government on behalf of the KP government that it will not return extra money of the fiscal budget so that interruption may be created between IMF and the Government of Pakistan.”
