Abu Dhabi: UAE low-cost carrier Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is currently going through the regulatory normal process to launch flights to the Indian subcontinent, local media reported.

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi could soon join the list of airlines serving the very busy and lucrative India-UAE sector.

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi’s managing director, Johan Eidhagen, said there are ongoing discussions about expanding its service to the Indian subcontinent.

    MS Education Academy

“We are super excited if we get into that market as we are currently going through the regulatory normal process and as soon as that is closed we will be able to announce routes,” Johan Eidhagen told Khaleej Times.

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is known for its discount ticket sales of 179 Dirhams (Rs 3,984). This airline will offer super cheap air fares and other massive discounts similar to India routes once it gets the green light to start operations.

Biden is expected to tap Air Force chief to be nation’s next top military officer

    [ad_1]

    senate air force budget 94054

“When President Biden makes a final decision, he will inform the person selected and then announce it publicly,” a spokesperson for the National Security Council said when asked for comment. “That hasn’t happened yet.”

Brown’s reputation and command experience in both the Pacific and the Middle East made him the odds-on favorite to be Milley’s heir apparent dating back to the Trump administration. But his appointment seemed less of a sure thing in recent months, as the White House seriously considered Gen. David Berger, the Marine Corps commandant, for the top job.

He rose through the ranks as the sole Black pilot in classrooms filled with white men, an experience he spoke about in an emotional video after George Floyd’s death in the summer of 2020.

Those who know Brown say he has the right experience to keep the military focused on its top priority: China. Brown’s most recent command experience was in the Pacific, as chief of Pacific Air Forces.

Brown also commanded troops in the Middle East, as head of U.S. Air Forces Central Command, and was serving in Europe when Russia illegally annexed Crimea in 2014, as a director of operations for strategic deterrence and nuclear integration at U.S. Air Forces in Europe. He was confirmed unanimously by the Senate for his current role as Air Force chief of staff in August, 2020.

Brown would be the first Air Force officer to become Joint Chiefs chair since retired Gen. Richard Myers, who held the position until 2005, an almost 20-year drought.

If confirmed to the chairmanship, Brown would become the top military adviser to a commander in chief who’s balancing the China threat with the need to equip the Ukrainian military with munitions, drones, missiles and other high-end equipment. That mission is in a state of flux, as the U.S. and other Western allies pivot from sending their own stocks of weapons to replenishing their armaments back home — all while making sure Kyiv has enough weaponry to fight off Russia in the months ahead.

  • Air pollution, fast food causing rise in asthma cases in Kashmir: DAK

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, May 2 (GNS): On World Asthma Day, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Tuesday expressed concern over rise in asthma cases in Kashmir.

“Air pollution and fast food are causing spike in asthma cases in the valley,” said DAK President Dr Nisar ul Hassan in a statement issued to GNS.

Dr Hassan said the air quality in Kashmir has been constantly deteriorating for the past few years due to the increasing number of vehicles, construction, brick kiln, cement and other factories which emit pollutants and significantly pollute our air.

“And this is behind rising cases of asthma in the valley,” he said.

“A study published in British Medical Journal has found that children exposed to higher levels of environmental pollutants are more likely to develop asthma compared to children who were not exposed,” DAK President said.

“The research showed that for every 5µg-per-cubic-meter increase in concentrations of air pollutants, there was about a 4 or 5% increase in asthma.”

“Not just what you breathe, what you eat puts you at risk of developing asthma,” he said.

“According to a study children and teenagers are nearly 40% more likely to have asthma if they eat fast food more than three times a week.”

Dr Nisar said over the years fast food has largely replaced homemade meals in Kashmir. Children and teens are often seen taking fast foods like burgers, pizzas, French fries and noodles.

“This change in dietary habits from homemade to processed and convenient foods could be another reason for rise in asthma cases,” he said.

“There is an urgent need to control environmental pollution to save people especially younger generation from the disease.

We need to educate parents to encourage their children to eat healthy and avoid fast foods,” he added.(GNS)

Domestic air traffic touches all-time high on April 30; Scindia says India rising

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Domestic air traffic touched an “all-time high” of 4,56,082 passengers in a single day on Sunday, with Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia saying that the skyrocketing passenger number is a sign of the country’s rising prosperity.

The country’s domestic air traffic has been on the recovery path for the past many months after being severely hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

“Indian Domestic Air Travel Hits New High, surpasses pre-Covid Average”, on April 30, the civil aviation ministry said in a tweet on Monday.

    MS Education Academy

A total of 4,56,082 passengers flew on 2,978 flights on Sunday, as per the ministry. India’s domestic air traffic reaches new heights with an all-time high!” it said.

Prior to Covid, the average daily domestic passenger number was 3,98,579. In a tweet, Scindia said that the country’s civil aviation sector is setting new records every day.

Post Covid, skyrocketing domestic air passenger number is a sign of the country’s rising growth and prosperity, he added.

In March, domestic carriers flew 128.93 lakh passengers, an increase of 21.4 per cent compared to the year-ago period.

During the January-March period, the airlines carried 375.04 lakh passengers, according to the latest data from the aviation regulator DGCA.

  • California passes most stringent diesel-engine emissions rules: ‘Fighting for air’

California passes most stringent diesel-engine emissions rules: ‘Fighting for air’

    [ad_1]

California has passed stringent new rules to limit emissions from diesel-fueled locomotive engines, putting the state on track to implement the most ambitious regulations on high-polluting railways in the country.

The landmark step taken by the California Air Resources Board (Carb), which regulates California’s air quality, requires the phase-out of inefficient locomotive engines more than 23 years old by 2030, increase the use of zero-emissions technology to transport freight from ports and throughout rail yards, and bans diesel-spewing engines from idling for longer than 30 minutes.

In the hours before the unanimous vote, dozens of environmental justice advocates and community members spoke in support of the rules, highlighting the heartbreaking burden placed on frontline communities who have been left to grapple with higher rates of asthma, cancer and other devastating health effects, along with the relentless rumbling that shakes neighborhoods along the tracks.

“We are fighting for air,” Gemma Pena Zeragoza, a resident from San Bernardino, tearfully told the board. Others shared stories of children forced to share inhalers, a kindergartener who couldn’t physically keep up with her love of running and family members lost to respiratory illnesses.

According to California regulators, diesel emissions are responsible for some 70% of Californians’ cancer risk from toxic air pollution. The rule would curb emissions on a class of engines that annually release more than 640 tons of tiny pollutants that can enter deep into a person’s lungs and worsen asthma, along with nearly 30,000 tons of smog-forming emissions known as nitrogen oxides. Carb analysts project a 90% reduction in local cancer risks in the decades following implementation.

The rule would also drastically cut greenhouse gas emissions from locomotives by an amount akin to removing all heavy-duty trucks from the state by 2030.

“It’s going to be groundbreaking and it’s going to address the diesel crisis that’s been poisoning communities near railyards for literal decades,” said Yasmine Agelidis, a lawyer with environmental non-profit Earthjustice.

Still, some advocates had hoped for more. After years of pushing for stronger regulations, many emphasized that there’s more to be done, including narrowing the time locomotives can be left to idle and hastening the transition to cleaner railways.

“I wish we could do more – but this is a good first step,” said John Balmes, a board member, before the vote, calling the rule the biggest single thing that could be done for public health and the environment.

California also still has to get authorization from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to move forward with the rule, but regulators aren’t worried.

“We are talking to them and getting positive feedback from them that we are on the right path with this regulation,” said Hector De La Torre, another board member, during Thursday’s meeting.

Representatives of the rail industry who spoke before the board pushed back against the proposal, saying that the accelerated timeline wasn’t feasible.. “Currently there is no clear path to zero-emissions locomotives,” a spokesperson for Union Pacific said during the meeting, adding that infrastructure and capacity for the shift is inadequate. The company has given itself a longer runway to transition, aiming to achieve net-zero by 2050.

The Association of American Railroads, an organization that represents all major freight railroads across North America, echoed those concerns about mandating a swifter transition, saying in a statement that it “ignores the complexity and interconnected nature of railroad operations and the reality of where zero-emission locomotive technology and the supporting infrastructure stand”.

    skip past newsletter promotion

The organization has also been outspoken about how essential and efficient freight railway is at transporting goods – especially as online orders continue to rise. “It would have taken approximately 3.5m additional trucks to handle the 63.8m tons of freight that originated by rail in California in 2021,” the organization said.

Wayne Winegarden, a senior fellow at the Pacific Research Institute, added the rule would be expensive for rail companies and increased costs will mean higher prices for many goods that move by rail.

But residents who live near railroads and have borne the brunt of breathing toxins say they have waited for clean air long enough.

Heidi Swillinger, who lives in a mobile home park in San Pablo, a small city in the San Francisco Bay Area, along the BNSF Railway, estimates that her home is just 20ft from the tracks. She said it’s not uncommon for diesel fumes to fill her house, resulting in a “thick, acrid, dirty smell”.

“Nobody wants to live next to a railroad track,” Swillinger said. “You move next to a railroad track because you don’t have other options.”
