    by Faiqa Masoodi

SRINAGAR: In a major breakthrough, a Kashmiri scientist along with a group of European scientists has discovered a new potential drug for the treatment of metastatic hypoxic cancers. The drug is currently in an advanced stage of further investigations post-animal trials.

    Dr Musadir Nabi Peerzada
    Dr Musadir Nabi Peerzada (AIIMS)

Hailing from Muqami Shahwali in Kupwara’s Drugmulla belt, Dr Mudasir Nabi Peerzada led a team of eminent European scientists and co-workers to discover a new drug for the treatment of various metastatic hypoxic cancers.

Dr Peerzada who is currently working as a C-Level scientist at AIIMS New Delhi, has completed his postdoctoral training at the National Institute of Pathology. He was awarded a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Department of health research, Government of India.

The discovery is believed to help in silencing the HIF-1 factor-controlled human CAIX and CAXII activity in cancerous cells. The hCAIX and hCAXII are overexpressed in the renal, pancreatic, gut, oral, brain, lung, and ovarian cancers, therefore the drug could be significant in treating multiple cancers with greater efficacy.

Dr Mudasir said that he and his team strenuous efforts for many years to make this path-breaking discovery. The drug has shown satisfactory results in various tumour models and is currently undergoing advanced investigations.

“This discovery took us years of tests and trials. We tested it on animals before going ahead,” Dr Peerzada said, adding that the drug is undergoing advanced clinical trials for further investigation.

The study was published in ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters entitled Discovery of Novel Hydroxyimine-Tethered Benzenesulfonamides as Potential Human Carbonic Anhydrase IX/XII Inhibitors was published on May 8, 2023.

He said that the new findings are remarkable in curing hypoxic cancers and will be a boon for cancer-related research.

The other scientists who are part of this invention include Dr Alessandro Bonardi, Dr Niccolò Paoletti, Dr Daniela Vullo, Dr Paola Gratteri, Dr Claudiu T Supuran, and Dr Amir Azam

Dr Peerzada is working on the development of anti-cancer therapeutics discovery taking into account the ATP binding site of kinases, hCAIX, hCAXII activity, cycle arrest at the G2/M phase of mitosis, prevention of HER2 dimerisation to deregulate PI3K/AKT and MAPK cell signalling pathways.

Doctors at AIIMS Delhi remove whistle stuck in airways of 4-year-old through bronchoscopy

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences here removed a whistle which had got stuck in the airways of a 4-year-old child after he accidentally aspirated it, through endoscopy.

“Shahin, a native of Nuh distrist in Haryana, was brought to the Mother and Child Block of the hospital Sunday morning,” Dr Prabudh Goel, Additional Professor, Department of Paediatric Surgery said.

He said the child’s father had bought him a pair of slippers which had an inbuilt whistle. The whistle got dislodged and Shahin put it inside his mouth and it landed in his airways, Goel added.

    MS Education Academy

“The child was coughing when he was brought to the emergency ward. He was also in respiratory distress because the airways were compromised… the child was also making a whistling sound while breathing,” the doctor said.

The left main bronchas was okay, the left lung was being aerated and that is the reason the child survived. Additionally, there was movement of air into and out of the right lung through the whistle. The parents told us that it took them about one-and-half hours to reach the hospital.

A foreign body lodged in the main trachea blocking the main airway is an emergency of the highest order, Goel said.

“The child was directly taken to the operation theatre from emergency where we did a bronchoscopy. The bronchoscopy per say is a life and death challenge. Besides that it runs a risk of damage to the brain. There is a possibility we might need to do treacheostomy or a thoracotomy (open chest surgery) in such children,” he said.

AIIMS director Dr M Srinivas was also present during the surgery.

Dr Meenu Bajpai, Head of Department, Paediatric Surgery said such incidents of children coming to the emergency ward after swallowing peanuts, pieces of almonds, beads, safety pins, buttons and batteries are common mostly in children aged below 5-7 years. He said the hospital encounters approximately 100 such cases in a year.

“Through this case presentation, we want to spread awareness that parents should keep such items such as buttons, batteries, small toy whistles, necklace beads, peanuts, almonds and shirt buttons out of the reach of children,” he said.

Modi in Hyderabad: Vande Bharat, AIIMS & public meet key events on PM’s visit

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The BJP’s preparations for Telangana Assembly elections scheduled later this year are likely to get a boost with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Hyderabad on April 8 during which he is expected to address a public meeting and launch various development projects.

The BJP leaders expect that PM Modi’s visit will boost their morale in the runup to the Assembly elections. The party expects that he will set the tone for the party’s poll campaign.

The Prime Minister is expected to launch an attack on Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government for its various acts of omissions and commissions.

    MS Education Academy

PM Modi is likely to target BRS and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao over corruption, especially in the wake of questioning of his daughter K. Kavitha by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Delhi liquor policy scam.

He is also likely to hit out at the BRS government over the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) paper leak, which has heated up state politics.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also taken up state-wide protests over the paper leak, alleging involvement of KCR’s son and state minister K.T. Rama Rao.

The Telangana unit of the BJP has huge expectations from PM Modi’s visit in view of his recent statement about the state.

“In the south, we have always been strong in Karnataka and in Telangana, people now have confidence only in one party, BJP, and in Andhra Pradesh also people are looking towards us,” Modi had said on March 28 while inaugurating the residential complex of the party in Delhi.

Modi will be launching various railway projects at Secunderabad Railway Station and later a public meeting at Parade Grounds in Secunderabad.

Union Minister for Tourism and Culture G. Kishan Reddy along with state BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar and party MP K. Laxman on Tuesday visited Secunderabad Railway Station and Parade Grounds to take stock of the preparations for the Prime Minister’s visit.

Kishan Reddy, who is also an MP from Secunderabad, said the PM would lay the foundation stone for the re-development of Secunderabad Railway Station. The station is being revamped at a cost of Rs 719 crore and will provide world-class railway infrastructure and amenities.

He will also lay the foundation stone of the new block of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at a cost of Rs 1,336 crore.

Kishan Reddy said this would give a big boost to health infrastructure in Telangana. The expansion and new facilities include academic blocks, auditorium, staff quarters, hostels and guest houses. The hospital block renovation is also underway.

Meanwhile, Telangana Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari on Tuesday reviewed arrangements for PM Modi’s visit. She instructed the officials to make foolproof arrangements.

Presiding over a coordination meeting, she said that all the departments have to work in close coordination and make the brief visit of the Prime Minister a success.

The police have to make adequate security arrangements, law and order, traffic and bandobast arrangements as per the blue book.

The fire department was asked to arrange adequate fire fighting equipment and fire tenders should be positioned at the venue. Medical staff, ambulances and other facilities should be kept ready at all the venues.

The Chief Secretary asked officials to repair roads to be used by the Prime Minister’s convoy. Uninterrupted power supply at all the venues should be ensured, she said.

DGP Anjani Kumar, senior police officers and officials from various departments including railways attended the meeting.

  • Delhi AIIMS to partner with other city hospitals for referral of patients

Delhi AIIMS to partner with other city hospitals for referral of patients

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) will partner with other government hospitals in the national capital for referral of patients to optimally utilise vacant beds in other hospitals, it was announced on Friday.

Lt Governor V.K. Saxena held a meeting with AIIMS Director Dr. M Srinivas, Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar and other officials to evolve a formal system for referral of patients. As the premier health organisation AIIMS always suffer acute shortage of beds, the pact will optimally utilise vacant beds in other government hospitals where critical but stable patients from AIIMS could be referred for further treatment.

The new system will also ensure that patients who require primary and secondary healthcare services go to the other hospitals and chronic and critically ill patients get specialied treatment at the AIIMS.

Under the pilot project, the Indira Gandhi Hospital in Dwarka and NDMC’s Charak Palika Hospital will be taken on-board and paired with the AIIMS starting next month.

The AIIMS will support these hospitals in terms of expertise and critical infrastructure and patients from the AIIMS could be referred to these hospitals in case of unavailability of beds. Gradually, other government hospitals and healthcare centres will be roped in and developed as ‘Partner Institutions’ of AIIMS, to cater to the local population in different localities of Delhi.

The aim is to develop super-specialty hospitals in different localities of the capital so that the burden on AIIMS could reduce and simultaneously people across the city could access healthcare near their homes at par with what they would have got at the AIIMS.

The LG has directed the Health Department to carry out a gap analysis of available beds in all its major hospitals within a week. It was also directed to develop a centralised dashboard where the availability of beds in all government hospitals in the city will be available on a real time basis.

AIIMS will be built soon in Madurai: Telangana Governor

    [ad_1]

Madurai: Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan on Thursday, on Wednesday, said in her “capacity as a doctor” that AIIMS in Madurai will be built soon.

Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, Soundararajan said, “In my stature as a doctor and not as a governor, I promise that AIIMS Madurai will be built soon. As a doctor, I believe that the AIIMS hospital should be built to world-class standards, and that this will be done.”

“When they were in the union government, the DMK did nothing to help the AIIMS. However Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the initiative for the AIIMS project in Madurai,” she added.

The Telangana Governor said that PM Modi is also working to bring a medical college in every district of Tamil Nadu.

She further added saying, “The centre has constructed multi-speciality hospitals in Madurai, Chennai, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli. The Prime Minister is working to bring a medical college in every district in Tamil Nadu.”

  • ‘AIIMS Bibinagar project delayed indefinitely’, alleges Uttam Kumar Reddy

‘AIIMS Bibinagar project delayed indefinitely’, alleges Uttam Kumar Reddy

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Lok Sabha Congress MP, N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Friday said that the construction of All India Institute Of Medical Science (AIIMS) Bibinagar has been delayed indefinitely by the Central Government with a lack of transparency.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare answered MP Uttam Kumar’s question in Lok Sabha regarding the long-pending AIIMS Bibinagar project and said that the tender has been awarded but did not provide any timeline for the completion of the project.

“A long-standing public demand of Telangana State has been delayed indefinitely by the Central Government and moreover with a shameful lack of transparency, no reliable information has been provided. Instead, the Government has revised information provided by themselves repeatedly, and have not furnished a single reason for the continuous delays,” said the Nalgonda MP.

The Telangana MP had raised a similar question on September 18, 2020, in the Lok Sabha and the Union health ministry informed the House that the timeline for completion of AIIMS Bibinagar is September 2022.

In February 2022, the Ministry informed that the date of completion has been pushed to November 2023 and subsequently in July 2022 when MP Uttam Kumar asked for a timeline of completion, the Ministry stated that the project will be completed by January 2025.

On Friday, in reply to the MP’s question, the Union health ministry only replied that the tender for the construction of AIIMS Bibinagar has been awarded in July 2022 but did not specify any timeline of completion.

Section 93 of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act required the Central Government to complete certain guarantees within 1O years, and AIIMS Bibinagar was one of them. The Government revealed in the Lok Sabha on July 22, 2022, that out of Rs 1028 crore sanctioned for AIIMS Bibinagar only Rs 29.28 crore has been released so far.

The MP alleged that the Union government has displayed startling inconsistency in providing information about the status of AIIMS Bibinagar. The medical institution is a part of developmental guarantees and has been delayed for a very long time.
