Canada announces additional military aid to Ukraine

    [ad_1]

Ottawa: Canadian Defence Minister Anita Anand has announced additional military assistance to Ukraine.

Canada will donate nearly 8,000 rounds of 155mm ammunition, as well as 12 air defence missiles sourced from Canadian Armed Forces’ (CAF) inventory, to sustain the air defence systems currently deployed in Ukraine, Anand said in a statement issued by the Defence Ministry on Wednesday.

Canada will also donate more than 1,800 rounds of 105mm tank training ammunition, to support the donation of Leopard 1 tanks announced by Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands, she added.

She also confirmed that the CAF started the shipments of the additional Leopard 2 main battle tanks pledged by Canada at the end of February, Xinhua news agency reported.

Canada has committed eight Leopard 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine in total. All eight tanks, and the previously announced armoured recovery vehicle, ancillary equipment, and ammunition donated by Canada, are expected to be in Ukraine in the coming weeks, the statement said.

Since February 2022, Canada has committed other military assistance donations to Ukraine, including more than 200 Senator commercial pattern armoured vehicles, a National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System with associated munitions, 39 armoured combat support vehicles, and anti-tank weapons.

CAF personnel are currently deployed to both the UK and Poland to assist with training members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces under Operation UNIFIER, Canada’s military training and capacity building mission in support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Since the start of Operation UNIFIER in 2015, the CAF has trained more than 35,000 members of the Security Forces of Ukraine, according to the Canadian Defence Ministry.

  • Meta CEO fires 10K more employees, shuts 5K additional open roles

Meta CEO fires 10K more employees, shuts 5K additional open roles

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday announced to sack an additional 10,000 employees via several job cut rounds in the coming months.

In a Facebook post, Zuckerberg said overall, “we expect to reduce our team size by around 10,000 people and to close around 5,000 additional open roles that we haven’t yet hired” in the company’s “year of efficiency”.

In a separate filing with the US SEC, Meta said the new job cuts will lower the high end of its expense guidance for the year by $3 billion.

Over the next couple of months, organisation leaders will announce restructuring plans focused on flattening the organisations, cancelling lower priority projects, and reducing hiring rates.

“We will let recruiting team members know tomorrow whether they’re impacted. We expect to announce restructurings and layoffs in our tech groups in late April, and then our business groups in late May,” the Meta CEO said.

In a small number of cases, it may take through the end of the year to complete these changes, he added.

“Our timelines for international teams will also look different, and local leaders will follow up with more details,” said Zuckerberg.

The fresh cuts come just four months after he laid off 11,000 employees, or 13 per cent of the company, in November last year.

Zuckerberg said that after restructuring, Meta plans to lift hiring and transfer freezes in each group.

“Other relevant efficiency timelines include targeting this summer to complete our analysis from our hybrid work year of learning so we can further refine our distributed work model. We also aim to have a steady stream of developer productivity enhancements and process improvements throughout the year,” he added.

In its ‘Year of Efficiency’, Meta will make the organisation flatter by removing multiple layers of management.

“As part of this, we will ask many managers to become individual contributors. We’ll also have individual contributors report into almost every level — not just the bottom — so information flow between people doing the work and management will be faster,” Zuckerberg noted.

  • Can’t give additional DA even if beheaded, says Mamata Banerjee

Can’t give additional DA even if beheaded, says Mamata Banerjee

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said in the Assembly that her government will not be able to provide additional dearness allowance (DA) to the state government employees “even if she is beheaded”.

Her comments come at a time when the joint forum of the state government employees have already announced observing a strike on March 10 in demand of the DA arrears.

“The previous Left Front regime denied payments of DA arrears year after year. After we came to power, we increased the DA payment manifold. How much more do you want? What else will satisfy you? If you do not like me, you can behead me,” she said on the floor of the house during the extended budget session of the Assembly that started from Monday.

Banerjee also referred to the annual leaves enjoyed by the state government employees in West Bengal, which, according to her, is much more than what is enjoyed by their counterpart in the Union government or in other states. “State government employees on an average enjoyed leave to the tune of 40 days every year. In states like Tripura and Uttar Pradesh, the employees there do not enjoy so many facilities,” she said.

She also said that the West Bengal government has continued with the pension scheme even though many state governments had done away with it. “Huge money is going from the state exchequer for this payment of pension. What do you want? Shall we pay the DA arrears and close down the pension scheme,” she asked.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari later told the newspersons that the state government should first try to control wasteful expenditures on accounts of festivals and fairs and concentrate on revenue generation before giving such excuses for not paying the DA arrears. “Today or tomorrow, the state government will have to pay the DA arrears as rightly pointed out by the court that getting DA is the legitimate right of the employees and not a fruit of charity,” he said.

  • Bantala leather complex will get additional investment of Rs 10,000 crore: Mamata

Bantala leather complex will get additional investment of Rs 10,000 crore: Mamata

    [ad_1]

Howrah: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said the Bantala leather complex in Kolkata will get an additional investment of Rs 10,000 crore.

In the last one year, 92 new tanneries have been given land lease for setting up units in the complex, she said.

“At Bantala, Rs 30,000 crore have been invested that generated employment for three lakh people. Another Rs 10,000 crore will be invested,” Banerjee said at a programme here in Howrah district.

There are 50 units at Bantala and 50 more are coming up, the CM said.

Banerjee on Thursday also laid the foundation stone of several projects and extended government services to six lakh people in five districts – Howrah, Hooghly, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas and Nadia.

She said the Duare Sarkar’ (government at doorstep) scheme will be held every three months.

Nine crore applications for the scheme were received by the state government, of which seven crore have been considered, the chief minister said.

Efforts are underway to provide tap water access to all in West Bengal by 2024, Banerjee said, as she laid the foundation stone for a 100-bed hospital at Furfura Sharif and 208 water projects.

The Trinamool Congress supremo also said that more than 30,000 MSMEs have come up in Howrah district and two parks – jewellery and hosiery – have been set up there.

She said a Rs 2,700-crore flood relief project has been taken up, which would provide relief to the residents of Howrah, Hooghly and Midnapore.

Banerjee added that her government has invested Rs 35,000 crore in the Deocha Pachami coal block in Birbhum district, and Rs 10,000-crore worth rehabilitation package has been provided.

Three industrial corridors are also coming up in south Bengal — Dankuni-Kalyani, Dankuni-Haldia and Dankuni-Raghunathpur — the CM said.
