Govt ready for talks with protesting farmers, says Tomar; urges them to ‘come with logical concerns’

New Delhi, June 9

Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar on Wednesday said the Government was ready for talks with protesting farmers and urged them to “come with concerns on farm laws with logic.”

Scores of farmers have been camping at Delhi’s borders since November last year demanding that the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; Farmers’ (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020; and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 be rolled back, and a new law made to guarantee minimum support price (MSP) for their crops.

Enacted in September 2020, the three farm laws have been projected by the Centre as major reforms in the agriculture sector that will remove the middlemen and allow farmers to sell their produce anywhere in the country.

However, the protesting farmers have expressed apprehension that the new laws would pave the way for eliminating the safety cushion of the MSP and do away with the “mandi” (wholesale market) system, leaving them at the mercy of big corporates.–PTI
