The 8.5 km long Banihal-Qazigund tunnel on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has been completed. At present, the testing process of state-of-the-art equipment is going on, as soon as it is completed, the tunnel will be opened for general traffic by the end of this month. The construction company has got permission for the trial run of traffic in the tunnel made with the Austrian tunneling method. This tunnel will reduce the existing 270 km long distance of Jammu-Srinagar highway by 16 km. Also, all-weather traffic will be possible.

The tunnel, built at a cost of Rs 2100 crore, consists of two tubes and a corridor has been built between the two tubes at a distance of every 500 meters. These are emergency exit points for emergencies. Muneeb Tak, chief manager of the construction company, said that the ventilation and electrical equipment in the tunnel is under investigation. In this a total of 126 jet fans, 234 CCTV cameras, fire fighting system have been installed.
